The New York Knicks Thread.

Head coach Mike Woodson debunked rumors about him and the Knicks agreeing verbally on a contract extension. Woodson said that he and the Knicks have yet to discuss anything about the matter.

Now that the New York Knicks are ousted in the playoffs, they have a very interesting offseason. Rumors buzzing that they would like to free up salary cap space as early as the NBA Draft through potential trades.

Priority should be secure Jeremy Lin's services for long term. JR Smith is most likely testing the free agency waters via opting out from his Player Option. Steve Novak and Landry Fields may entertain offers from other teams as both will be unrestricted free agents.

In the coaching situation, I believe that the New York Knicks will still go with Mike Woodson.

Mike Woodson: Jeremy Lin Will Be Back

Mike Woodson all but guaranteed Jeremy Lin will return next season, but the coach stopped short of handing over the starting job.

"Jeremy's a big part of our team. Will he start? Only time will tell," Woodson said. "He has to recover from his knee and use the summer to work on his game to put himself in the best position possible for our ballclub.

"He has started for our team and he has played well for our basketball team. But this summer will be very pivotal for him in terms of his improvement and the future is very bright for him. Will he be back next year? Absolutely. He's a big part of our ballclub."

Lin missed the final 17 games and the playoffs because of a torn meniscus, sitting as backups Iman Shumpert and Baron Davis suffered season-ending knee injuries.

The Knicks are over the cap and will likely have to use their mid-level exception (approximately $5 million) to re-sign Lin, leaving them with little else to persuade other free agents like Steve Nash and Jason Kidd.

Lin said he feels loyal to the Knicks for their role in 'Linsanity', but didn't share Woodson's confidence about re-signing.

Because he's a restricted free agent, the Knicks will have an opportunity to match any offer.

"There's always going to be uncertainty until the final contract is signed. Nothing is set is stone. That's what I've learned. We talked about it. I love the Knicks and the organization. But at the same time it's a business, so. Me personally, I think it would be great if I come back. But crazy things happen."

Toney Douglas is the only point guard under contract next season.

"I have confidence in Jeremy," Carmelo Anthony said. "I believe in Jeremy."

Also, there are unconfirmed reports that Mike Woodson has agreed to coach the Knicks next season.

I was a Knicks fan until the day that they traded the Greatest Knick Ever: Patrick "Hoya Destroya" Ewing. The Knicks' management team have never gotten it right except for a glimpse when they signed up Amar'e which was then cancelled out when they brought in Melo. If you take out Melo and you leave Amar'e with Lin, you have a dynamic duo: bigman/ point for the next five years, but if you have Melo into the equation, he not only halts the ball movement but more importantly, he doesn't play enough defense to help the Knicks become a top 4 team in the east. Amar'e and Lin don't play All NBA First Team Defense but their ability play miminal level of defense on the court is suffice. I believe the Knicks made a horrendous move they got Melo as he takes far too many shots and prevents the natural flow of the offense. The best thing that the Knicks can do is to trade Melo - even though he loves playing in New York (as they say the NBA is a business, not a charity) and get more quality role players to support Lin and Amar'e. Quality role players that can shoot, rebound and defend. The typical quality role player example that comes to mind is Landry Fields or a Steve Novak.
Will the Knicks ever be able to rise up and return to the glory days of the early 1970s and the 1990s? I believe they will not be able to unless the owners make an overhaul change from top (front office/ executive level) to bottow (trade Melo). The positives signs is the current coach especially what he has recently done but more importantly what he did in Atlanta, the combo of Amar'e & Lin as well as role players such as Fields and Novak.

Melo can play the team just needs time to gel.

I am not giving up on the Knicks roster just yet. Injuries has really killed this team's potential this season. I would like to give the starting lineup of Chandler, Stoudemire, Anthony, Smith and Lin alongside a couple of faces a full training camp under Mike Woodson.

The Knicks gave up so much pieces to obtain Anthony and it would be foolhardy to trade Anthony after a season and a half. The guy wants to stay and play in New York.

Grunwald: 'We want to keep' Lin

Knicks general manager Glen Grunwald said he expects Jeremy Lin to be with the team next season.

Lin will become a restricted free agent July 1. There's been some speculation that teams could backload an offer sheet for Lin, who can't make more than roughly $5.5 million for the 2012-13 season. The Knicks can match all offers for the point guard, and Grunwald doesn't foresee a scenario in which they won't.

"Not at this time," he said. "We can keep him if we want him, and we do want to keep him. I believe that Jeremy had a great experience here and I believe he wants to come back. So that's where that is."

The NBA Players Association filed an appeal to get Lin and unrestricted free agent Steve Novak their "early Bird" rights, which would allow the Knicks to sign them without using either their midlevel or lower-level exception. If the union loses, the Knicks' midlevel will go to Lin. The Knicks hope the arbitrator rules in favor of the players.

"We're interested bystanders," Grunwald said. "Obviously, it will impact some things and provide us with a couple of more options in terms of trying to improve our team."

Knicks coach Mike Woodson said Lin, who had arthroscopic knee surgery in April, will be able "to go full" in his offseason program. Lin has been picked to play for the USA select team that will train with the national team in July.

There will be a court hearing regarding Bird Rights Retention after a waiver is set in June 13. The NBA Player's Union are making the case of Jeremy Lin and Steve Novak on which the union argues that both players should have retained their bird rights, hence, the Knicks can re-sign both using the mid-level exception and lower level exception.

Meanwhile, head coach Mike Woodson said in an interview with ESPN Radio that he has no doubt that Jeremy Lin will return to the Knicks for next season. Woodson insisted that Lin is still the starting point guard for the foreseeable future and the franchise is confident with Lin leading on the floor.
