The Calvin Abueva Thread

Can he duplicate Paras' record?

highly probable. if d trend continues, he will have castro and rdo as his closest competitors for d mvp title unless alaska and/or tnt will fare badly in d 3rd conference and caguioa or yap will lead their respective teams to d championships of d 3rd conference.

the best player of d conference for d com.cup should be a toss-up between castro and abueva (tenorio will be a strong candidate it if bgk makes it in d finals).

his exclamation dunk last night over a mammoth 23k + pba fans.

^ the muscle flexing and bowing at center court after that dunk was either entertaining or irritating depending on which side your on. Reminds me of the antics of WWE wrestler :)

Calvin Abueva is the most polarizing and charismatic player in the PBA today. You will absolutely LOVE him if he's on your team and absolutely HATE him if he's on the other side. One thing all fans can agree on: Everyone loves his high energy and high motor brand of basketball. If he was 6'6, he'd be the best forward in the PBA today, if he isn't already and it wouldn't even be close.

but he isn't 6'6". he's 6'1" and that is why people doubt if he can do it, and he loves proving other people wrong, and a lot of those people hate to be wrong and that's why he has a lot of detractors. I enjoyed his performance at the end of the game. his flexing and his bowing to the crowd, now that is classic!!! classic villain in WWE:D

Abueva is potential 'NBA material' had he been five inches taller, says Dozier

ROBERT Dozier has played with and against the best players in the world - Derrick Rose, Lebron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, Tyreke Evans to name a few.

But the former University of Memphis Tiger insists his Filipino teammate with the Alaska Aces - Calvin Abueva- still leaves him in awe almost every game night with his raw energy and grit.

In fact, Dozier said most of the time, he believes the 6-1 1/2 Abueva has more energy in his tank than any of those NBA superstars.

“Honestly, I’ve played with the best guys in the world. Lebron, D-Rose, but I have never played with anybody with the energy level that Calvin has,” bared Dozier.

“I’ve never seen anybody like him before (energy-wise),” he added. “I’ve never seen anybody with so much fight, so much energy."

Dozier also appreciates how Abueva has sparked Alaska several times with his hustle and talent.

“He has won us ballgames. He turned ballgames around. You gotta appreciate a person like that,” the 6-9 Best Import candidate added.

Asked if he could rate Abueva’s on-court hustle ahead of Rose, James and other NBA stars he played with, Dozier nodded and said: “Yeah, by far."

The North Carolina native played with Chicago Bulls star Derrick Rose at the University of Memphis, while he had a short stint in the last preseason with the Miami Heat, where he was able to share the court with James, Wade, Bosh and the rest of the reigning NBA champions.

But Dozier has so much admiration for Abueva he believes the super rookie from Balibago, Angeles City would have been "NBA material" had he been four, five inches taller.

“You got a guy with a heart as big as - wow, I don’t know. Man, he’s an energy guy. He’s a hustle guy. He’s all over the court, man,” said the Alaska import.

“I would always tell people, 'If he was like 6-5 or 6-6, he’ll be in the NBA,'” he said. “All pure heart. He is pure energy. He will be in the NBA. I love playing with him."

Didn't Jaworski do that before when he was still playing for Ginebra??? I read an article that said Abueva's all-time favorite basketball player was Jaworski.

Isn't this how basketball historians and experts describe Jaworski??

We have the same idea. As I said before if only he was 6'5 I think he is already in the NBA if he plays that way. But lets hope he develops into a good SG and decent three point shooting

Abueva will never be a shooting guard. At best a shooting/small forward (3-spot).

If Canaleta turned from a center in the UAAP to a shooting G/F, I'm sure Calvin can also learn to shoot those 3's given the proper training. Heck even Belga is shooting 3's already.

Was KG ever a center at UE? I remember him playing SF/PF with the likes of Masbang at PF and Butel at C.

Canaleta became a starting center in his final year with UE in 2004. Debut season of Dindo Pumaren and rookie Marcy Arellano. He did a great transition from a 5 (center) to a 3 (small forward). Abueva could easily make the same transition as Canaleta BUT not a 2 (shooting guard), in my opinion.

If he learns to shoot those 3s consistently then he can definitely become a G or at least a G/F. His dribbling and passing are both slightly above average but there's still room for improvement.

His biggest concern right now is being able to channel his energy properly so he won't miss so many easy shots and layups. He reminds me of Joshua Webb who was full of energy but almost always out of control.

I predict Abueva will make it to the Phi. team final roster at the 2015 FIBA-Asia Men's Championship. I believe in 2 years time, he will improve further. With the likes of Garry David & other Gilas-2 pool members not getting any younger, I believe Abueva's chance of making it to the final roster of RP team in 2015 is big. Also, I expect guys like Paul Lee, Allain Maliksi & JV Casio to be strong candidates for RP team 2015.
