Dwight Howard suspended 1 game for 16th technical

NEW YORK (AP)—Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard has been suspended for one game without pay for picking up his 16th technical foul of the season. He will serve the suspension Monday when the Magic are home against Portland.

The penalty was announced Saturday by NBA executive Stu Jackson.

Howard leads the NBA in technicals this season. His latest one came with 1:41 left in the first half Friday night against Chicago. With the Bulls up 43-29, Howard came down with an offensive rebound and was hit on the top of his head by Kyle Korver.

Korver was whistled for a foul but took a swipe at the ball moments after the play. That prompted Howard to swing his elbows. The referee separated the players and also called a technical on Howard.

Stern answers back to Van Gundy

NBA Commissioner David Stern comments about the recent words of Orlando Magic head coach Stan Van Gundy, where the coach likened Stern to several despotic dictators.

Stern commented on the topic unofficially on ESPN radio. Stern said the following statements:

"Van Gundy's comments stemmed from frustration with his own team, rather than with the league. I see somebody whose team isn't performing, whose star player is suspended, who seems to be fraying,"

"I would venture a guess that we're not going to be hearing from him for the rest of the season. I think when he stops and reads what he said, realizes what he did, he will say no more. ... I have a feeling some modicum of self-restraint will cause Stan, and the team for which he works, to rein in his aberrant behavior."

Dwight Howard responded towards former teammate and now Phoenix Suns center Marcin Gortat, who claimed that he knew how to stop Howard better than any center on the league.

Howard scored a team high 26 points, alongside 15 rebounds and 5 blocks to lead the Magic over the Suns 111-88.

Howard: "I'll follow my own path"

Dwight Howard spoke to the Orlando Sentinel regarding the issues that he may leave Orlando and play elsewhere. Howard said on the interview:

"I'm not trying to run behind nobody like Shaq or be behind somebody else."

"I want to start my own path and I want people to follow my path and not just follow somebody else's path. I want to have my own path, and I want to start that here in Orlando. But I can't do it alone. Not only do I need the right teammates, but I need the city behind me. That's the only way it's going to get done. We can change this small city that we have -- this small market that we have -- and we can make it a big market."

"As of right now, I'm a part of the Orlando Magic and I plan to be here. And I want the Magic to do whatever they can to make sure that we can get our city behind us. That's the only thing that I want to happen: just to have the city behind me and the support of our fans. I never said I was leaving. I never, ever thought about leaving. That's basically where my head is right now. I never said anything to the the Magic about what my plans were because that's not what I'm focused on right now."

Howard: No Extensions Talks

Howard: No Extensions Talks

Dwight Howard denied reports that he and the Orlando Magic have discussed a possible contract extension. Howard was quoted in an interview with the Orlando Sentinel:

“There’s no truth to that. The biggest thing right now is everybody understands I have one more year left. I’m keeping my options open, but there’s no other place I’d rather be than Orlando. I want them to understand that. “

“But, at the same time, I do want to win, make sure everything is in line: our team, just everything from top to bottom, everybody is reaching for a championship. It can’t be me and a couple other guys. It’s gotta be the whole team — everybody on the staff. It’s the same goal: the championship attitude. As of right now, I don’t plan to be anywhere else besides Orlando."
