Smart Gilas Dubai 2011

Al Ittihad Alexandria has 3 imports, more than half of its players are members of the National Team of Egypt, it is the Champions of the Egypt Superleague and is among the Top 4 teams in both the African Club competitons and the Arab Club Championships. It is a very strong club team that use its size to its advantage.

To beat this team, we must play strong aggressive defense and we must execute our team plays both inside and outside. Turn overs is a major concern.

We could take advantage of the fact they are currently distracted with the street riots now happening in their country.

In short, the Egyptian team we are facing tomorrow is the San Miguel Beer of the Egyptian League, albeit taller.

They will definitely capitalize on pounding the ball inside the paint. We need to play with the same energy we showed today against Syria and sustain that all throughout the game. It will be hard knowing full well that our young boys will be playing against mature athletes at their prime and who themselves are also brimming with confidence after the OT win over the Lebanese team.

congrats gilas. good luck tomorrow! Will the Dubai tournament be the first championship SG will bring home? I hope so!

i think if Gilas wants to be consistent and reach an above 50% chances of winning the FIBA, they should add more elements to their game..

what they have or at least they have shown that they can have:

1. Good team defense.
2. Good enough outside shooting.
3. Fast breaks
4. Good enough rebounding

what they need and i think they could never have under the current line up:

1. More inside presence. Douthit alone is not enough. There should be two combination of Douthit and Asi playing together.
2. Individual defense specially the guards.
3. Slashers and penetrators the likes of Bahrami from Iran.

if they will have all of these, then they will have a big chance to win the FIBA.. if not, then we just have to pray hard that our outside shooting are clicking and our opponent are not!.....

anyway, congrats Gilas! you deserve to be in the final......

strongly agree with this...

I notice I thinks 3x instances in the game that 2 big guys attack Marcus. One guy slashing coming from their screen then the other big guy screening the blocking sight of Marcus. Since Douthit is only the big guy that offense routine from Al Wahda was effective.

to those who have seen the egyptians play, do you guys think we can match up with them? the first meeting we were murdered in the rebounds dept, isn't it?

I watched live game between our SG against Egyptian game. All I can say we have a chance if our execution will be smooth and our perimeter and beyond the arc will sink in. The egyptians are tall and huge body, but if our SG will do the same what they did against hoops and syria we have a better chance to be the champion in this tourney ..

Good luck to our SG (NT) ..

Damn, can't watch the live game, until now I am having a flu. .

I guarantee that this same tactic will be employed by the Egyptians tomorrow, clearly exploiting their height advantage over smaller players that Toroman has the tendency to field at the 4 spot. We need to establish our post defense early to discourage the Egyptians inside the paint. Coach T cannot afford to gamble on a small lineup and by relying on outside shots. If we fall behind by 10 pts in the first half, it would almost be impossible to come back against a better rebounding team.

A Douhtit + Balle or Douhtit + Asi or Asi + Balle should always be a feature in the frontcourt if we are to stand a chance against this team.

All 4 teams will be tired tomorrow. It will be a battle of will and whoever wants it more will win the championship.

I have a strong feeling we'll see for the first time Coach Rajko field both Marcus and Asi, I feel he'll do it either late in the 3rd Quarter or early in the 4th Quarter. But this would only happen if both big guys are not in foul trouble by that time.

Foul trouble on our bigs is one reason why Greg Slaughter's service will still be needed in the future, as games will often be won on the basis of interior defense and rebounding.

For now we can live without GS, but come the FIBA tournament Greg's size is required to put bodies against the bigs of Iran, Sokor, Japan, Lebanon and China.

Douhtit and Asi will undoubtedly accumulate a lot of fouls guarding Asia's big men and GS should be there as a third string center mainly to provide a rotation of big bodies for shot blocking, intimidation and rebounding.

sana sir nardy..;)

the team right now is really limited..after the two its only Jball who can man the paint.
lots of weaknesses to exploit for our opponents.
I think our team needs to play a relaxed game. since Egypt can run with us and the fact that they have size, its not logical to engage them in something that can bury us deeper. our team has good set of plays that can do good to them at whatever phase they play, its just the timing they need to get synced. coz sometimes they overdo things.:D
But if our team plays a good game, they are really good.
Hope they play in their real level in the finals.

Gilas' 3rd Championship trophy is coming....

51 pts from the pg of Egypt!! Calling Andy Barocca, we need ur "face to face" or "palit mukha" defense on this guy!!! :D
Probably, Lutz will assigned to this guy because he made good defense on the import of Syria last night..

OT: the crowd was awesome last night!! After the game, Marcus Douhit dance in the center court which entertain the crowd.. Probably, he appreciated the support of the Filipino Fans last night...

Barado ung fans ng syria hahaha!! while the syrian fans shouting "Syria" with drums, sasabayan ng mga pilipino ng "GILAS" aside from the "UWE UWE UWE" chant..

Gudluck to TEAM PILIPINAS!!! MABUHAY!!!

Great win by Smart Gilas yesterday! Awesome game and effort by all the players!

Gilas fans were awesome and the stadium was so packed to the extent that the upper stadium that is usually closed was also open... Many people sat on the ground and stairs and I actually watched the game while standing up cuz the Syrian guys with the drums were standing in front of me and blocking the view... Too bad I couldn't sit with the Pinoy fans as I couldn't change sides after Lebanon's game and the stadium was already too packed to go anywhere..

Yeah that dance by Douthit was quite nice :D

Big respect to Asi who stayed after the game to "hi 5" all the Pinoy fans and sign autographs and take some quick photos with the fans as well.

Gud luk sa'yo tonight and I have a hunch that if Gilas can play like they have in the past 2 games with the same intensity and a bit of luck the win will be yours for sure :)

Al Ittihad Alexandria has 3 imports

Not true Sir Nards... They have 2.
Darren Kelly is the U.S import for Ittihad. They also got the services of Ayman Idaeis (from Jordan and he used to play with the Jordanian NT and has lot of experience... (34 years old) )

I have a strong feeling we'll see for the first time Coach Rajko field both Marcus and Asi, I feel he'll do it either late in the 3rd Quarter or early in the 4th Quarter. But this would only happen if both big guys are not in foul trouble by that time.

Coach Rajko needs to use his big men wisely and both Asi and Marcus need to have a big game since Ittihad has alot of big guys and the advantage under the basket.
