Ryan staying put: Meralco chief denies coaching shuffle in wake of approach from ABL

Bolts board representative Mon Seguismundo has denied rumors that assistant coach Jong Uichico is taking over the coaching reins at Meralco once current head coach Ryan Gregorio moves over to the ABL to handle a new team under the Manny V. Pangilinan group. Jerome Ascano
NO coaching changes are in the offing for Meralco, and Ryan Gregorio is staying where he is now.

Bolts board representative Mon Seguismundo made this clear as he denied rumors that assistant coach Jong Uichico is taking over the coaching reins at Meralco once Gregorio moves over to the Asean Basketball League (ABL) to handle a new team under the Manny V. Pangilinan group.

“Our coaching staff is intact. And we have full confidence in coach Ryan Gregorio and his staff. They will stay where they are,” Seguismundo, also the current PBA vice-chairman, told Spin.ph over the weekend.

Seguismundo confirmed a Spin.ph story that representatives of the ABL have approached the group in recent weeks and invited it to form another team from the Philippines in the fledling regional basketball league.

However, he said talks have not gone and won't go beyond the exploratory stage.

“I know the ABL has been trying to approach us. And we talked a lot, but I don’t think we’re going beyond exploration,” the Meralco board executive added candidly.

San Miguel Beer is the lone Philippine representative in the ABL and recently won its maiden championship after a three-game sweep of deposed title holder Indonesia Warriors in the Finals. The league allows a maximum two teams from each member country.

For now, Seguismundo said Meralco is focused on boosting its roster in time for the season-ending Governors Cup after two failed playoffs bids in the Philippine Cup and Commissioner’s Cup, respectively.

He said the Bolts are merely on a “stand-by mode” as far as the fate of veteran Asi Taulava is concerned, saying reports of trades in the past weeks were mere talks in the media.

“We’re just awaiting any formal offers from any interested teams. Kasi lahat ng naririnig namin sa ngayon eh puro lang sa media. Sana gumalaw na sila (interested teams) so we could start the talks,” Seguismundo said.

Rumors came out a week ago linking Barangay Ginebra rookie Fil-Am Chris Ellis together with guard Josh Urbiztondo to a direct trade with Meralco for Taulava and rookie Fil-Am Cliff Hodge

SMC sports director Noli Eala has since denied it, stressing the Kings are not in any way trading the 6-foot-5 Ellis.

Meralco owns the PBA rights to the 6-foot-9 Taulava, who was named ABL MVP in the recent concluded season after helping the Beermen win the championship.

The past few weeks, the 40-year-old Taulava has made known his wish to play again in Asia’s first ever pro league, in the hope of ending his playing career with Ginebra.

Adding another star to the collection? hehe..

Maybe for Lutz?

that was the plan. we'll see if the official announcement comes out.

now if only GP can get rid of miller or perhaps Mercado in exchange for Denok. :D

If this is David for Lutz

Global Port wins. Lutz provides offense and defense plus he is just entering his prime.

Ginebra's Rudy Hatfield retiring after 14 seasons in PBA

BARANGAY Ginebra San Miguel forward Rudy Hatfield is calling it a career.

The hard-nosed rebounder and defensive specialist informed the Kings' coaching staff and his teammates of his decision to retire right on Ginebra’s first day of practice for the season-ending Governors Cup.

The 35-year-old cager, who spent 14 seasons in the PBA, said on Monday he wants to focus on his being a family man in Michigan and devote more time to his ministerial job as he hopes to become a pastor.

Hatfield will leave a big vacuum in the Ginebra frontline as the Kings are still trying to acquire the services of another veteran big man in Asi Taulava.

The Kings recently acquired the high-leaping Japeth Aguilar from Globalport, but a team insider told Spin.ph that coach Alfrancis Chua will most likely utilize the Pampagueño at small forward to create mismatches.

Reports have it that Chua is now pushing for the re-activation of former power forward Eric Menk, who suited up for the San Miguel Beermen in the Asean Basketball League last season.

Menk left Ginebra right before Chua, his first-ever PBA mentor at Tanduay, assumed the head coaching role of the Kings.

For his career, Hatfield averaged 10.92 points, 9.72 rebounds, 2.52 assists and 1.22 steals playing for Tanduay, Pop Cola, Coca-Cola and Ginebra.

Coach Al Chua announces resignation before players as turmoil grips Ginebra

BARANGAY Ginebra coach Al Chua announced before his players that he was stepping down as tension rose on the day the Gin Kings returned to practice, multiple sources told Spin.ph.

Just moments after Rudy Hatfield announced his retirement (for full story, see Ginebra's Rudy Hatfield retiring after 14 seasons in PBA), sources said a bigger surprise jolted the team when Chua told the players of his decision to quit his position.

Although he led Ginebra to the PBA Commissioner's Cup Finals just months after taking over from Siot Tanquingcen, Chua had been unhappy with some of the decisions made for the team by company officials.

However, Chua told the players that he was resigning for "personal reasons."

“Nag-resign daw coach Chua sa practice. Nagalit kay Mr. Eala. Inaawat pa ng team,” said a source who was present during the closed-door practice session.

According to sources, San Miguel Corp. sports director Noli Eala and Ginebra board representative Robert Non had to rush to the Kings practice facility at Xavier School in Greenhills to talk to Chua.

Both sports officials of Ginebra were still meeting with Chua inside at the gym as of posting time.

“Ang gulo nga sa amin ngayon. Nagulat nga kami lahat sa mga pangyayari. Andun pa sila nag-uusap pa,” said the source.

Another source told Spin.ph that even Ginebra superstar Mark Caguioa tried to pacify Chua and pleaded with him to reconsider his decision.

However, sources close to Chua bared that the pony-tailed coach had long been contemplating resigning and even took a vacation with his wife in Japan last month to think things over.

Team insiders said Chua had no hand in the choice of personnel who joined him in the Ginebra staff after a coaching shuffle initiated by San Miguel.

Another source bared that Chua and Eala had a heated argument at the dug-out in Araneta, moments after Ginebra lost to the Alaska Aces in the Commissoner’s cup finals.
