'Teka', how come I don't see Arellano University's name among the possible entries in the PCCL? That team beat Letran in the last FMC Tournament.

The Flaming Arrows are playing in the wildcard qualifiers I suppose as champions of the FMC. What is Arellano's mother league btw?

As far as I know, Arellano University Chief's so-called "mother" league are the Fr. Martin Cup (FMC) tournaments. That's about it. I could be wrong, anybody feel free to correct me on this.

But it seems there are a lot of talks going around about them joining the NCAA in place of PCU. By their performances against NCAA teams, I think they deserve that slot.

Exposure in a tough league like the PCCL will strengthen their cause of possibly joining the NCAA in the near future.

It think it's National Capital Region Athletic Association or NCRAA..Ginebra guard Chris Pacana has a blogsite when he played for Arellano in the NCRAA finals against St. Francis 3 yrs ago.

i think the monicker of arellano university is chiefs not flaming arrows.

Will the games of CCL be aired on TV? If ever been aired, what channel and when? And does anyone knows what teams will compete for the NCR Zonal? Just asking, thanks.

Arellano had officially changed their monicker to Chiefs, they were used to be called the Flaming Arrows when they were Champions the 1983 National Intercollegiate Championship, 1983 Philippine Amateur Basketball League and 1984 National Student Basketball Metro Manila Championship. Joey Loyzaga, Ricky Cui, Alvin Teng, Koy Banal amd Jay Ramirez were part of these 1980s teams. The present team were invited as they were the Champions of the Fr. Martin's Cup Division 1. With PCU's exit from the NCAA, ARELLANO University has signified its “serious intent” to join the National Collegiate Athletic Association. From what I know they used play and were champions at the National Capital Region Athletic Association.

imports against Ateneo

The Red Lions will have something to say about that:p:D

if the other schools would play their Imports,Ateneo would have a hard time winning another championship.I just don't know if they allow 2 imports to play on the same time in the CCL.

Alex ..... here's the official rule

* Take note that the PCCL requires that the lineups used by the teams in their just concluded tournament seasons should be the lineup to be used in the PCCL
.

So if the so-called "imports" that you are saying has not played in his team's mother league this season then said player would not be allowed.

But if what you are saying is true, then we could see Kirk Long and Vince Burke play for Ateneo at the same time. Same with La Salle's Ferdinand and Marko Betrocevic (if he already recovered from his injury).

Lyceum enters zonal phase in collegiate tiff
Friday, October 17, 2008

Lyceum of the Philippines University earned a berth in the zonal phase even as University of Santo Tomas bagged its second straight win in the resumption of the 2008 Smart-KFC-PLDT Philippine Collegiate Championship wildcard tournament at the Makati Coliseum.

The Pirates, who were among the 16 teams who participated in last year’s tilt, pulled away in the fourth quarter to defeat UCAA runner-up Emilio Aguinaldo College, 86-80, while the Growling Tigers dumped St. Francis of Assisi College in a tension-filled 64-51 triumph.

The victories enabled both teams claim top spot in their respective divisions heading into today’s final day of hostilities with UST needing a win against Las Piñas College to reach the next phase.

“Yung quickness talaga naming sa both ends ang nagpanalo sa amin,” said Lyceum head coach Bonnie Tan. “Masaya kami na makakapasok ulit kami sa next phase ng tournament.”

Edgar Difuntorum topscored with 21 points while Joseph Abaya added 17 markers as the Pirates pulled away from a slim one-point lead with under seven minutes in the game.

An 11-1 blast in a span of three minutes gave LPU an 81-70 lead as Difuntorum hit six points during that telling run.

Jon Santos led the Generals with 15 points with Julius Quiambao adding 12 markers.

On the other hand, Dylan Ababou recorded a game-high 30 points as UST, who finished a disappointing fifth in the recent UAAP season, led by a high of 19 points in the final canto, 56-37, after sailing through with a comfortable lead during the first three quarters.

St Francis, who captured the UCAA title in 2007, managed to trim a large margin into seven, 58-51, on a triple by Jan Dulawan with 2:19 left only for Ababou to convert a trey on the following play that virtually sealed the win.

A minor altercation with 35.2 seconds left in the game led to the ejection of UST big man Mel Gile and St Francis’ James Castanarez and Rex Leynes.

Leynes led the Doves with 19 points while Dulawan chipped in with 17 markers.

Meanwhile, St Clare College of Caloocan kept its hopes of making the zonals alive when they defeated LPC, 74-68, as southpaw guard Edu Mustre scored 25 points.

The Saints, fourth-placer in the NAASCU tournament, made a booming 25-1 run to end the second quarter as Mustre scored 23 points during that said burst.

Point guard Red Nacianceno added 14 points for St Clare while Blue Lions big man Sereno Cunial scored 20 points in a losing cause.

In another match, STI College forced a virtual rubber match with EAC for the final Group A slot in the zonal phase with a convincing 76-65 rout of De Ocampo Memorial College as Ramon Mabayo led the NAASCU second placers with 19 points.

UST, two others clinch zonal berths
Saturday, October 18, 2008

http://www.philstar.com/index.php?Sports&p=49&type=2&sec=30&aid=20081017135

University of Santo Tomas, Emilio Aguinaldo College and St Clare College of Caloocan gained the final three spots for the zonal phase after beating separate opponents on the final day of the 2008 Smart-KFC-PLDT Philippine Collegiate Championship wildcard tournament at the Makati Coliseum.

UST finished the three-day tournament with a 3-0 slate by eliminating Las Piñas College, 69-56, while EAC escaped past STI College, 90-88. St Clare, meanwhile, survived against St. Francis of Assisi College, 70-66. They will join Lyceum of the Philippines University for next month’s zonal phase against teams from Luzon.

Lyceum survived a gallant stand by De Ocampo Memorial College in the fourth quarter to post a 77-75 win. Regie Rimando scored 18 points as the Pirates ended with a 3-0 record in Group A.

The Growling Tigers leaned on the efforts of Dylan Ababou’s 24 points along with Mark Canlas’ 11 as they grabbed a commanding 20-point halftime lead at 41-21.

But Kenny Bullo, Sereno Cunial and Marlon Pening combined to cut LPC’s deficit to 10 points, 59-49, with seven minutes to go in the match only for Ababou to score six points in the remaining minutes of the game to keep the Blue Lions at bay.

On the other hand, the Generals relied on the heroics of big man Lowell Yaya and point guard Argel Mendoza’s in the fourth quarter to shut down a pesky rally by the Olympians from a seven-point deficit in the fourth quarter.

Yaya led EAC with 18 points.
while Mendoza and Julius Quiambao added 14 points each as they booted STI out of contention after they finished third in last year’s tournament.

“The game against Lyceum was a wake-up call for us so talagang todo kami ngayon against STI,” said EAC head coach Nomar Isla, who once steered the team to a UCAA three-peat from 2004-2006. “We’re glad na makakasama kami sa susunod na zonal.”

Mendoza recovered from claiming a technical foul for wiping his hands to a game official by hitting six points in the last two minutes while Yaya converted a triple with less than three minutes to go that put EAC on top for good, 78-77.

Lanky Aries Parinas, the NAASCU rookie of the year, scored 20 points while big man Richmond Sibal added 16 as St Clare built a 22-point lead early in the third period before James Castanarez and Rex Leynes led an insurmountable comeback to tie the game at 63-63 with 2:27 left.

But a basket by Sibal off a spin move and a driving layup by Mac Opalia gave the Saints a three-point cushion, 67-64, with 37.5 ticks to go before they eventually stop the Doves’ chance of tying the game on a bungled trey by Jan Dulawan with one second left.

“We’re happy na makakalaro kami sa zonal,” said veteran head coach Jimmy Mariano of St Clare. “Minsan lang naming makalaban yung mga teams sa buong Pilipinas so it’s an honor for the school.”

The zonal tournaments are scheduled next month in Manila with UST and EAC joining Mapua Institute of Technology, University of Luzon from Pangasinan, St Louis University from Baguio City and NCAA South runner-up Lyceum of Batangas in Zone 1.

In Zone 2, St Clare and Lyceum will meet University of the East, University of Nueva Caceres from Naga City, NCAA South champion Don Bosco Technical College and two-time NCRAA title-holder Arellano University.

Matchups to watch in the coming Zonal championships:
* Zone 1 - MIT / UST / Arellano matches
* Zone 2 - UE / EAC / Lyceum matches
* Zone 3 - Letran vs. UC
* Zone 4 - FEU vs. USC

Mods, I would like to request that the thread title be changed to "2008 PCCL Rankings". This is for easier indexing, and keep the thread from getting too long since we'll have to make a new one every year.

UC got a wildcard slot in Zone 3 which is somehwat questionable. Apparently, WLC and EVSU withdrew. What cant be certain is whether they did withdraw voluntarily or was there pressure to accommodate UC. It is unfair for CeSAFi having 2 teams playing in 1 zone
