how pathetic..3 visayas teams on the same group??this draw will favor the letran and the others will slug it out for the ticket for sweet 16..i think if uc will be in the letran group they will challenge letran for that ticket..the organizers seems to be unfair..it is not good for the development of basketball in our country
yup...Regional Champs should be on opposite groups.

this is their first year of conducting this tournament with regional and zonal eliminations..but i hope next year it will more comprehensive and use round robin format in the zonals and in choosing wild card entries for the ncr teams

Xu crusaders

Xu crusaders

watch out for the new xavier university ( ateneo de cagayan ) crusaders... they have 2 legit 6'5 and 6'6 players which are only 17 y.o. the xu coaching staff revamped its line up to make a way for new and younger players...

Erram and Siarot are older than 18 years, the reason why they weren't included in the RPYT which had CDO player Papot Paredes. And unless they have grown an inch or 2 from the last NSBC, I'd say Siarot is around 6'3 and Erram around 6'5. Judging from their play in the last NSBC, Erram is the better guy. Siarot is more like a shooting guard who is trigger-happy with that 3 point shot. He has a good percentage though. Against FEU, UM or USC in Zone 4? Hmmm, my concern is they were too soft when I saw them play in Cebu in the last NSBC. FEU's Cervantes and Ramos may not look strong but I think FEU's forwards(Baracael and co.) can hold them off. UM has Spencer Eman who is 6'7 although I m not sure about the level of his play. USC's Rowe and Bakker are deceptively strong despite their lean frame. If Llanto joins in, should be easier

Siarot is a 6-5 (with shoes) SG/SF player born 1989. He's got talent but still needs to mature. Like you said, he needs to improve his shot selection.

Erram is a 6-7 (with shoes) C player also born 1989. He's a solid low post player and delivers when neded. Both he and Siarot were considered for the RP Youth but were scratched because of age limits.

we will see how these 2 will fare againts the feu,um and usc
but given their height, they will contend for one of two tickets available for the sweet16

FEU is still the favorite for Zone 4 together with USC but the Mindanao teams will put up a good fight.

EAC, St. Clare, Lyceum and UST qualify for the PCC Zonal Tournament
by Mike Abasolo

Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals (90) vs. STI College Olympians (86)

EAC relied on Lovell Yaya (18-points), Argel Mendoza (14-points), and veteran shooting guard Julius Quiambao (14-points) to defeat the Olympians, 90-86. The Generals became the 1st team among the Wildcard contenders to enter the Zonal tournament. Darryl Mendoza top scored for STI with 21-points, followed by Ramon Mabayo with 19-points and Mike Cabangon with 15-points.

Lyceum University of the Philippines (77) vs. De Ocampo Memorial College (75)

Lyceum needed an axe to pull out a win on this one. De Ocampo, with a strong 4th quarter surge, would just not go quietly into the night. But Lyceum had what it takes to get the job done as they pounced on De Ocampo Memorial, 77-75, and advance to the Zonal qualifying round. Regie Rimando was his usual take charge self with an 18-point contribution for Lyceum followed by Glen Taguibao with 10-points. Waldemar Tibay, Jake Vista, and Rio Flores had 12-points each for De Ocampo.

St. Clare College of Caloocan Saints (70) vs. St. Francis of Assisi College Doves (66)

The Saints needed a strong 4th quarter finish to squeeze past the Doves, 70-66, to qualify for the zonal tournament. After a commanding 22-9 1st quarter lead, Rex Leynes took matters into his own hands with 15 3rd quarter points and help ignite a 7-0 attack to end 30-minutes of action with the Saints still on top, 56-45. Mack Opalia sealed the win with a go-ahead basket, 67-63 with only 37 seconds left in regulation. The Saints had 43 rebounds against the Doves’ 42. St. Francis ended their Wildcard campaign with 18 turnovers against St. Clares’ 16. Leynes had a game total 22-points followed by James Castanarez with 16-points. Saints veteran big man Aries Parinas had 20-points while forward Richmond Sibal had 16-points.

UST Growling Tigers (69) vs. Las Pinas College Blue Lions (56)

The Growling Tigers cruised to a 69-56 win over the hapless Blue Lions and hopefully regain lost glory from their dismal performance in the regular season. Dylan Ababou was his own usual deadly self as he carried the scoring load for UST with 24-points, 4 rebounds with a 5 of 7 shooting from the 3-point area. Far behind the scoring column was Mark Canlas with 11-points but with 10 rebounds to his credit. Bull strong Sereno Cunial was the main man for the Blue Lions with 14-points and 10 rebounds followed closely by Kenny Bullo also with 14-points including 7 rebounds. The Growling Tigers had a game total of 12 assists, 9 steals, 17 turnovers and 5 blocked shots while the Blue Lions had 10 assists, 3 steals and 19 turnovers to wrap up their wildcard campaign.

MANILA, Philippines—West Negros University swept the Region 4 qualifying tournament of the Smart-PLDT-KFC Philippine Collegiate Champions League at the WNU Gym in Bacolod City over the weekend.

The Mustangs, the Bacolod champions the past 10 years, capped their dominance with a 74-68 victory over University of Iloilo in the finals Sunday night.

With playmaker Alfie Villariza at the helm, West Negros trounced Colegio San Agustin-Bacolod, 69-63, before prevailing over John B. Lacson Maritime University, 76-64, in the two-day tournament.

The Mustangs of Anthony Agustin advanced to the six-team zonal championship scheduled Nov. 9 to 11 in Ormoc City, where the top two squads will clinch spots to the “Sweet 16” national finals.

The Mustangs will go up against Bohol International College, AMA Computer of Ormoc, University of San Jose-Recoletos and University of Cebu and NCAA third placer Letran College.

Villariza finished with only eight points against UI but power forward Ryan Flores ably picked up the slack by coming up with 20 markers, while Jeff Jacinto and Rolly Jaca combined for 21 markers.

West Negros, the 2005 National University Games titlist and the 2006 National Students Basketball Champion with a team led by current Ateneo de Manila University standout Nonoy Baclao and Hapee rookie Ely Olarte, reached the "Sweet 16" last year, before losing to Jose Rizal University.

Country’s best cage program known this year
10/22/2008 | 10:08 PM

MANILA, Philippines – The school with the best collegiate basketball program would be known later this year when the two best collegiate squads battle for the ultimate price of winning the Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL) crown.

Finding the country’s top collegiate squad is PCCL’s sole mission according to its chairman Rey Gamboa, who said that eight slots are still up for grabs in the knock-out format tournament. “We hope to have one national collegiate champion by years end."

Gamboa made the announcement during Tuesday night’s 2008 UAAP and NCAA Press Corps Collegiate Basketball Awards at the Coral Ballroom A in Manila Pavillion.

UAAP and NCAA finalists Ateneo, La Salle, San Beda and Jose Rizal University lead the cast of early qualifiers in the “Sweet 16" that also include champions San Sebastian College-Cavite Baycats (NAASCU), Manuel L. Quezon University Stallions (CUSA), Universal College of Nursing Dragons (UCAA) and University of Visayas Green Lancers (CESAFI).

Twenty-four teams with nine regional champions from 25 various leagues from Northern Luzon to Zamboanga are currently vying for the last eight slots.

Cash prizes await teams that reach the regional, zonal and finals of the tournament that is being sponsored in part Smart PLDT, FilOil Flying V and KFC. The cash prize is a grant to help strengthen the school’s sports development program.

The champion team will win P500,000 while the runner-up gets P200,000. The third and fourth placers will be receiving P100,000 and P50,000 each.

Gamboa added that the champion team will also represent the country in next year’s Universiade Games in Belgrade, Serbia.

Former Ateneo player Danny Francisco, who was the Collegiate Awards’ guest speaker, opened the event reminiscing his collegiate basketball days where he helped the Blue Eagles win the UAAP titles in 1987 and 1988.

Francisco’s basketball career, however, was cut short when he was diagnosed with a heart ailment before the 1989 season. He never played competitive basketball again after undergoing open heart surgery.

Francisco is still connected in sports as the secretary general of the Amateur Softball Association of the Philippines.

The UAAP and NCAA Press Corps honored the notable achievements of Ateneo, La Salle, San Beda and JRU in their respective leagues the past season and also gave a posthumous award to veteran sports writer Ric Dela Cruz of the Journal Group.

i am wondering why SSCR Stags is not in the Wild Card Qualifiers. In reality they reached the final four of the NCAA..

as mr rey gamboa said

this year pccl champions will earn the rights to carry the flag of our country is next year universiade in serbia but i think its better to to form a team of college players to represent our country on that said event..the regulation says that the players need to be enrolled in college in the country and not older than 26 i think im not sure though but we can have a team compose of players coming from different universities...the soon to be formed national team headed by coach toroman can play on this tournament because they will compose of mainly by college students..even foreigners are allowed to play to our team so a nice tournament to gauge the competitiveness of our soon to be formed national team

Didn't Mapua eliminate the Stags for the NCAA Final Four?

anyways, seems like the PCCL bigwigs are browsing the forums. APparently, the bracket assignements for zone 3 were changed. Bracket A now has ACLC-Ormoc, UC and Letran while Bracket B will have USJ-R, WNU and BIT-IC.
