Imo it's about time for this thread :p I'll begin with this:

Lefteris Kakiousis stepped down from his position as headcoach of AEK, despite still having a contract, because the club decided to decrease the budget even further in the upcoming season.

And this team is supposed to play in the ULEB Cup next season, I expect the worst... :rolleyes:
 
Reminds you of something? Same exact thing happened last year with Katsikaris.

I really wonder why AEK decided to play in the ULEB cup? Is it a matter of pride? (they have been participating non-stop in Europe for more than 10 years now). What pride if they are about to be losing by 20s from some Kapfembergs and Ovarenses, while being watched only by the referees and the gym's cleaners? It was a good opportunity to stay out of Europe for a year to shape up and build a half-decently competitive team for the Greek A1. They should have stayed out of the ULEB Cup, out of FIBA ELs and FIBA ECs. No-one cares about these competitions (let alone their fans or even the players) and these will only contribute to increase their expenses and the burden to their already unhealthy budget.
 
Yeah, the situation pretty much looks like before last season, only one level lower (ULEB Cup instead of Euroleague this time) and once again it looks like AEK will build a team that won't be able to compete on the european level. The only reason I can think of why they decided to participate in the ULEB Cup is because that way they might be able to sign decent players looking for exposure in one of the major european competitions to make a better name for a cheap price. But I definately agree with you, they should've stayed out of all european competitions this year, especially for the good of greek basketball.
I don't expect a lot from both greek teams in the ULEB Cup next season actually.
But I don't really get why Panellinios decided not to take part, they're a team with money, trustworthy, already building a team for the next season again (Nadjfeji already resigned with the team and they're interested in Kalaitzis) and they have potential. Maybe because of the arena? Or doesn't Kyriakou want to put money into the team any more?

I would be thankful for updates regarding Olimpiakos-Kazlauskas-Yannakis situation, and if somebody would hear anything about greek clubs trying to bring back guys like Taylor Coppenrath, Chris Owens or Tre Simmons, I would be thankful for info too.
 
Since the contract between Panionios and Zdovc is not signed yet, Croatian media are mentioning Cibona's Dražen Anzulovič is on Panionioss wishlist (as well as Giannakis), it might be that Croatians just want to get Anzulovič out of Cibona real bad :)
just a rumour, but anyway...

Thanks for the info :) Zdovc now won't be the coach of Panionios (so like you said it really was 50-50), he announced that he's sorry that he can't sign despite the agreement because of private reasons.
Anzulovic was a rumour for Panionios before Zdovc got announced as well, I don't know if the club was in talks with him though. Two coaches who definately were in Athens for talks are Subotic and Pavicevic.

Like Andros mentioned in the EL Signings thread, Kazlauskas won't be Olys coach next season (he chose China over Oly), a fav for the job is Giannakis but it's also possible that the current assistant coach Sfairopoulos gets the job.
 
Sport24.gr just reported that Giannakis will definately not continue as Maroussis headcoach and that the club will make an official announcement soon. A name for Giannakis replacement is the one of Lefteris Kakiousis, who left AEK yesterday.

If you go to Eurobasket.com it shows in Olympiakos page Yianakis as head coach and at Marousi Kakiousis ????????????????

Is it mistake or do they know something more????
 
Maroussi signed AEKs former coach Lefteris Kakiousis as expected for the position of headcoach. Movements also on another bench of the league: PAOKs president Paneloudis fired PAOKs headcoach Soulis Markopoulos :rolleyes:
 
Ι cannot understand why Tak-Pan sacked Soulis.....
Is he gonna find a better head coach...?
Paok will never progress as long as there is Paneloudis and as long as the fans
stay away.
Therefore,the club had no more than 2.000 tickets the entire season...
They had 53 (!!!!!!!!!!) tickets with Kalev Talin for EURO CUP...

after olympiakos signed gershon it seems that panionios is close in signing Sharon Drucker (former assistant of gershon) as their coach.


and sthing out of topic but really serious!boban jankovic former panionios player died yesterday because of heart problems!
Boban was forced to stay in a wheel chair for 13 years!

Panionios agreed terms with Israeli coach Sharon Drucker. He'll earn 200k per year, the only thing that's not sure yet is whether he'll sign a 1+1 or a 2 year contract.

Aris player Mike Wilkinson will get a passport from FYROM soon, which means that the team will be able to sign two more US players.
I can't help it, but I just don't like these passport stories...

It is easy to say when you have an enormous budget...
Other teams that don't have a sugar daddy need to find ways to progress...
Maybe you think it takes basketball back...
I think that the basketball will go back if there are only two teams fighting for the Championship like this year,or like 80s-early90s when there was only ARIS-paok...
Greek basketball needs to become more competitive...

Well, I don't argue that greek basketball needs to become more competitive and I hoped all season that Aris would get back into the Euroleague, followed by an increase of the budget. I also don't argue that it's easier for some teams to build a decent roster than it is for other teams - and that those teams need to find their ways.
However I just don't like these passport stories, this is nothing especially against Aris but against every team that does it. Imo a player who gets a passport of a country should at least have lived for some time in that country and speak the language a bit. But maybe that's just me... ;)
