You're joking right? Playing Asian Champs and a bunch of mediocre test matches is not a step down in competitiveness compared to Euro Champs, world champs and hopefully Olympics alongside guys like Nowitzki? The PBA is a pretty solid and entertaining league, but yet
no comparison to quite some european leagues, not to mention international competition like euro league etc.
Anyway, Standhardinger yet has to show that he can make it as a pro. So far he had solid stats in a semi pro league (Pro B) here in Germany, mainly used as a development league for young Germans, and a handfull of solid college games. From there, it may still be a long way to become a standout player. It's not yet even sure that he could actually deliver, what some of you guys may see in him. Although he surely is a very gifted player, he's still very young and still has a lot to learn.
In the Philippines, he may get the warmer welcome, but expectations would be very high, and the dream could quickly end if he can't live up to that. In Germany, the road would certainly be rougher for him in the beginning because of the tougher competition for starting jobs, but wouldn't he benefit more from the coaching over here as well as practising with and playing against stronger players?
Well, we could continue this now like a tennis match, back and forth, without making any progress until we know what Christian himself really wants. Maybe he will study in Germany, quit pro ball and make us both look stupid.
In my oppinion, the future of philippine basketball doesn't lay in the hands of foreign players (yes I know Chris is half pinoy) anyway. As soon as they begin to shine, they'll be on their ways to Europe, the States or whatever, and Gilas can start all over again.
