I don't know if its just me but Douhit plays and his form is like Lamar Odom. Even his style except he does not shoot 3 point shot, but his style is almost the same

Gilas signs up Douthit as 'import'

MANILA, Philippines - American Marcus Douthit yesterday agreed to undergo the naturalization process to become a full-pledged Filipino after he signed a one-year contract that would allow him to play for Smart Gilas in various international competitions, including the 2011 FIBA-Asia Championship in Lebanon, a qualifier for the London Olympics.

“Yes, it’s Douthit,” said Smart Gilas team manager Frankie Lim after yesterday’s contract signing between the former Providence standout and Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas, headed by Manny V. Pangilinan.

“We are very happy to have Marcus in the team. We think that he can help us in so many ways, he’s very welcome,” Lim said.

Although he didn’t give details with regard to Douthit’s salary, Lim said the contract will end until August and will only be extended if the Nationals qualify for the Olympics.

“The contract will start now up to August next year. Hopefully, we could extend it until 2012,” said Lim.

Douthit, who last played in the tough Russian League, earned the nod of Smart Gilas coach Rajko Toroman, the players and the SBP after anchoring the team to victory in the recently concluded MVP Cup.

The Nationals beat the World Championship-bound Jordan for the crown.

In three games, Douthit averaged 18 points, nine rebounds and provided the needed inside presence.

“Great,” said Smart Gilas skipper Chris Tiu. “The players like him a lot not just because of what he can bring to the court but also because he’s a friendly guy and easy to get along with.

“He’s also a natural leader and a competitor, that’s what we really need,” he said.

Toroman, for his part, said Douthit will not be an integral part of the system.

This is a good news!!! I know he can deliver though he is not a dominant center who will score a lot but he can be just what the system of Coach Toroman is needed.

Hope the naturalization process will be finished the soonest and we can get him to play in the Asian games. Good news indeed!. Hope we can have a back up also, just in case :)

now we only need to upgrade our power forward and replace toroman with a defensive coach and well all set for asian supremacy:cool:

I didn't get this part. Will not be an integral part of the system?

ala Shawn Daniels IMO.

No designed plays for him, just stay on the post, put up screens, get yourself open, take open shots, pick & rolls and mag-rebound ka na lang. ala-scrapper.

A bigger Freddie Abuda. Which I wouldn't mind having in this team. Makes me wonder how things would've turned out had Abuda been three or four inches taller :D

I think what he means is, he will not be an integral part in a sense that the entire team will not be too reliant on him specially in scenarios where he might be injured or unavailable for some reason. Unless it's a typo.:D

Only defense? Sorry, but a defensive coach only? Tsktsk. May I ask if you are a coach yourself? OR have you been to the Olympics? Better yet, have you coached at the WORLD level? Defensive coach!!!! What they need are defensive stoppers and not the coach. Toroman beat Chot Reyes and Jordan in 2007. He beat a group of excellent one-on-one players. The Philippines did not find an answer for that defense in the fourth quarter in the Rp-Iran game. So tell me, a defensive coach only? S*%^$D!

let's all think positive

hehe easy bro..good point...I think Toroman already have done some wonders for the team.Beating the powerade team, Fadi El-Khatib's team with imports and the Jordanian squad.Something our last NT didn't achieve.I think Toroman's Philosophy is to coach smart but play smarter..even if we have Pat Riley as our coach,he can't control whats happening on the court.I do believe that if we do ass up 3 or more players in the squad we'll be a very good squad but we're doing ok so far.We just have to wait for some more reinforcements(Williams,Pringle and maybe another power forward/center),wait for them to gel with the rest of the team, pray nothing goes wrong like untimely injuries etc..I think we'll be a strong semi finalist team for next year.

anong score ni Milan? My thoughts on the negative side.

Negatives:

its his first games with Gilas, lets give him a couple of tournaments to regain his form.

- maybe prone to injuries
maybe, but he still plays even if he is injured.

- is not the big time blocker we were looking for
yeah he's not a bit time blocker, but I have seen him doing the help defense correctly and positioning himself on defense way better than Milan. I saw a lot of shots altered/challenged by him, which is good enough for me. When Gilas had Milan, other teams are just driving to the basket without any fear, I only saw the 2 games against jordan but I saw them being hesitant on their drives to the basket when they see Douthit (hirap ng spelling) guarding the middle.

- doubtful is still as good a year or two from now
good until fiba asia is already good enough, fiba asia is our goal anyway.
kahit mawala na laro nya after fiba asia, ok lang, basta pasok na.
