even though the league had earlier said only a tie for 2nd place after the semifinals would warrant a playoff .... with so many scenarios that could result to at most 3 teams having a chance to be the 2nd finalist, I wonder how Commisioner Chito Salud would handle said situation which it seems they never anticipated to happen, would it be fair to have the quotient system to decide the matter.
Actually Nards, you have to stop speculating on fair or not fair since it's the rules are already in black and whitei know you are anticipating TNT's eventual challenge for a Fianls seat-- understandable since you work there
But here are the rules:
B. After semifinals (for 2nd Finals berth)
1. 2-way tie for 2nd - In the event of a two (2) way tie for 2nd position, the two teams playoff: The winner advances to the Finals.
2. One team wins 4-of-5 semifinal games but fails to land in top 2 - In the event that a team wins 4 of its 5 semifinals games but fails to land in the Top 2, this team
gains the right to challenge the 2nd placed team in a playoff. The winner advances to the Finals.
3. 2-way tie for 2nd and a lower ranked team wins 4 of 5 semifinal games. In the event of a two (2) way tie for 2nd position, the two teams playoff. The winner shall play the team which wins 4 of its 5 games in a knockout game. The winner advances to the Finals.
4. 2-way tie for 2nd and 2 lower-ranked teams win 4 of 5 semifinal games. In the event of a two (2) way tie for 2nd position and two lower ranked teams win 4 of its 5 games in the semifinals, the two teams tied at no. 2 playoff. The two lower ranked teams which win 4 of its 5 games shall likewise figure in a knockout game. The winners shall play in the final playoff game. The winner advances to the Finals.
5. 3-way tie for 2nd and one lower-ranked team wins 4 of 5 semifinal games. In the event of a three (3) way tie for 2nd position and a lower ranked team wins 4 of its 5 games in the semifinals, the PBA quotient shall be applied to the tied teams. The team with the 2nd highest quotient and the team with the lowest quotient shall play in a knockout game, with the winner facing the team with the highest quotient in another knockout game. The winner shall then play the team which won 4 of its 5 semis games in the final playoff game. The winner advances to the Finals.
With these rules, the PBA has done a commendable job in ties being decided by quotient alone-- but rather with playoff knockout games.
