With the amount of annoying fans UP has, I'm starting to miss Ateneo.

They love to perform mental gymnastics to justify their BS, and love to position themselves to be the victim, an underdog and when they win, they don't exhibit any grace either.

They're a smarter version of Ginebera fans.

I've seen Ateneans stand and cheer for the Archers even after a loss.

Feels like a bitter rivalry you love to see it. The fans hate each other during the games and it isnt really anything more or dirtier than that. Both team’s players also play harder with this.

The thing with the Ateneo-La Salle rivalry from years past, I felt the players were still playing for the school and for school pride. Most UP and DLSU players these days feel like mercenaries. It’s not as fun.

it def felt like that for the admu players they hated ls and mbala. They played against them their whole career.

Nieto’s, Assitio, Ravena, Babilonia, Tio, Go, andrade, Ildefonso their old core grew up playing against them.

The new DLSU guys have a bit more ls players on the team but they arent that home grown as the admu ones.
Alian, David, Macalalag,Gonzales, then baclaan , pablo and cortez next year .

The last time they were this bad was like 26 years ago and we literally called them taeneo because they were shit and owe their relevance to Jamike Jarin and his dominant Ateneo high school teams from '98 onward and when the San Beda boys starting from Membrere got recruited after all this bullshit they their players are "students first" and pointed to the Paul Tanchi's and the Chris Tiu's when they got at least five other degenerates every year. They made the Final Four in '99 and were convinced they'd be a dynasty. Since then, they've been annoying af just like how UST thought La Salle supporters were over the top with those "tuition niyo, baon namin" signs against UE, FEU, Adamson, and NU.

For that matter, majority of Ateneans didn't even know or at least refuse to acknowledge there is an Ateneo de Cebu (they've been known an Scared Heart Jesuit School, seperate schools for boys and girls) before Jared Bahay.

Do you think it's a good idea to deploy two additional referees that will serve as guards on both benches to prevent any types of commotion or altercation from happening?

That could work, but if the Amores v CSB is any indication, a determined guy is hard to stop.

For me prevention of escalation is key. It's inevitable in intense games for emotions to run high. It's on the refs and coaches to not let it go overboard. One time I saw a coach get taunted by opposing players, his players on the bench taunted back and he got mad at his own players for doing that.

I think any team in any sport would have die-hard fanbases and that's just the nature of sports as a whole. In the Philippines, it's probably more magnified on social media since socmed is very prevalent in our country but thankfully we haven't reached a point where fanbases are physically confronting the players. Recent example would be the Dodgers-Padres Game 2 matchup where fans started throwing stuff at the players on the field.

Imo its on the refs as well. They shouldnt let those guys taunt or whatever, its also their responsibility remind everyone on the court to leave out the antics. Shouldnt be shy giving out techs if its warranted, especially if they want to keep the control of the game.

While that is true, I am talking about how UP fans are in general. You see it all over social media. The funny thing is these "fans" weren't there when the team wasn't good. If you ask them about basketball, they probably only the "sikat" players and nothing else. I feel bad for the real UP fans that stuck with them even before Gov Remulla funding. Those guys were just happy to support them regardless of the outcome.

Venue security is another factor. I doubt Amores would've pulled off his punch-a-thon against CSB under the watchful eyes of the Batista-esque bouncers of Araneta Coliseum.

so yeah it’s not the new fans that are insufferable for me. I’d argue it’s worse on the part of Perasol and the like.

Yes, they have the ultimate authority on the court. They have the power to eject even the coaches.

In AAU games, it's common for refs to even throw out unruly fans. That is the ultimate line that should not be crossed...fans should at all costs be prevented from joining any altercation. That's when sh*t hits the fan like in Malice in the Palace and Basketbrawl Australia. Even Amores v CSB was escalated by I believe a player's brother in the stands.

Refs have a difficult job just like our ordinary traffic cops. They don't really make a lot and probably the training is not that adequate and yet they have to control sometimes very powerful and entitled people. One just got mauled recently.

In all your years of watching UAAP basketball, when have you ever seen any basketball program issue a statement like that?

Have you been on social media lately? They have hashtags and whatnot for something they do not have concrete proof of and when called out on it, there's always a mental maneuvering to justify their actions.
