In A1 league, Khimki won 73:68 against CSKA away.

How does it go? the first 2 teams in the final, or 1 vs. 4 and 2 vs. 3 at the semies in the end?

RUS - Khimki and Dynamo avoid early playoffs exits

MOSCOW (SUPERLEAGUE A) - BC Khimki and Dynamo Moscow just about scraped through into the semi-final round of the Russian League playoffs on Thursday, beating Spartak St Petersburg and Lokomotic Kuban respectively.

In a back and forth series, Khimki eventually shook off resilient Spartak 95-85. The visitors put up a great fight throughout the series and Game 5 was no different as they pushed the favourites right down to the wire.

It took a 10-2 run in the final three minutes of Game 5 for Khimki to take a comfortable lead and punch their ticket for the semi-finals where top seed CSKA Moscow await.

Kelly McCarthy finished with a team-high 16 points and the pair of Ricky Minard and Paulius Jankunas combined to score all the points in that decisive spurt.

Spartak's Levance Fields exploded for 36 points, but they came up just short of pulling off a stunning upset.

Meanwhile, Dynamo Moscow just about saved face against Lokomotiv Luban, seeing them off 71-66 thanks to an Aleksei Zhukanenko basket and three free-throws by Sergey Bykov in the final 1:13 of the final quarter.

Dynamo won the first two games of the series before dropping the next two and the manner in which they prevailed on Thursday - to set up a semi-final showdown with Unics - was not the most convincing.

The hosts led 38-26 at the break before Lokomotiv fought back and it took those five crucial points by Zhukanenko and Bykov to secure the win.

Zhukanenko led all scorers with 15 while Alex Surovtsev and Gerald Green had 12 each for Kuban.

After Khimkis 82-66 win in game 5 of the semifinals vs. Unics Kazan Russia will have the expected showdown in the finals between CSKA and Khimki. Khimki head coach Sergio Scariolo already opened the series a few days ago in his blog:

And here is the answer of CSKA president Andrey Vatutin:

After the audiences in the Russian playoffs so far were really shameful (only 1.400 per game watched 3-0 of CSKA against Dynamo Moscow), the finals obviously need some additional PR to stir up the public interest ...

It all flares up in the context of the corruption scandal in Russian basketball. After all, nobody cares about the playoffs now as there are suddenly more exciting things to discuss. Russian internet platforms feature super long discussions about Chernov & Co.

BTW, Vatutin gave such a cheap shot to Scariolo. Really, unworthy.

Not just a sweep but a total domination.

                Game 1: 89-58
                Game 2: 69-54
                Game 3: 76-60

Great shooting by CSKA. Siskauskas went 10 for 10 for two in the third game, for example. Khimki featured a really bad defense and absolutely no combination basketball worthy of a team that wants to beat the perennial champion in a series. Khimki has no centers with goods hands and any kind of offensive game. It has two undersized PGs compared to what CSKA has to offer. It's selection of foreigners made the team play with just one PG or with just one SG. Mozgov couldn't be put into play effectively. No real passing, no real fighting. I hoped so much for a team to challenge CSKA for the title but this story was so one-sided, it wasn't fun to watch anymore.
