We have enough bigs, a 6'1 version of Bernardino would do

        • Is Vanessa de Jesus eligible for Gilas? No PH passport but has two Pinoy parents. I'm to understand Alexis Mark doesn't make it?

Pwede, I think Aninam would need to have another big by her side.a 6'5 big that could basically shoot anywhere and get a very good number of rebounds and block some shots.i think our 6'6 Fil-Am kid would still need time to mature.By that time, if she becomes matured maybe we could get a 6'3 forward that could do it all.

              • These 2 Duke’s De Jesus and Penn’s Padilla could probably play for Perlas but after they finish college studies...

While Kai Sotto's journey to the NBA is highly publicized, a number of low-key Filipina hoopers can likely match his dream feat in the WNBA.

UPenn is an Ivy League school but in Div 1, Ivy League schools don't give out athletic scholarships. The student-athlete should be academically-smart plus gifted with athletics abilities. Good for her.

Another Ivy Leaguer is Fil-Am freshman Krystal Raymundo, but she plays volleyball.

Former Perlas mainstay, Sofia Roman, played Div 1 hoops for Dartmouth, another Ivy League U.

JACK Animam and the rest of Shih Hsin University continued to coast in the University Basketball Association, this time pulling off a 57-point mugging of National Taipei University, 105-48, Saturday at SHU Gym.

The Filipina banger made mincemeat of the opposition as she racked up another double-double performance of 14 points, 10 rebounds, and three blocks to help the Tigers cruise to their sixth straight victory.

Lin Die led SHU in scoring with 18 points, four boards, and two assists, while Chen Yuti got 11 points, six steals, three rebounds, and three dimes.

It was the Tigers' choking defense which allowed them to have a superb 26-7 opener, forcing NTU to commit 34 turnovers in the game.

Xu Wenxuan and Yang Shuyan also scored 13 points each, taking full advantage of the extended garbage time for SHU.

Song Shuping paced NTU with 10 points in the losing effort.

Shih Hsin aims for win no. 7 on Sunday against University of Taipei to end its four-game homestand.

                        • Fans' corner: Former Hong Kong domestic helper back home to give pro basketball a shot
                          2 HOURS AGO

                          By RHAN MORALEDA, Basketball Republic

SHANA Mae Latoza used to work as a domestic helper in Hong Kong. But that didn't stop the 28-year-old Filipina to still do what she loves and continue the quest for her childhood dream- to play basketball and become a professional player.

So when the Women’s National Basketball League-Philippines opened it's door to Filipina cagers who wanted to apply for the first women's pro league in the country, with a mixture of circumstances, luck, and a little push from her friends, she didn't hesitate to apply.

A 5-foot-4 guard/forward, native of Iloilo City, and the eldest of the five siblings, she shared to us her story on how she started to love basketball at a young age.

"When I was a kid na-impluwensyahan ako ng Papa ko at mga kalaro ko, I used to play with boys on my age kaya na hasa yung skills ko."

Those games honed her skills and led her to play organized basketball in high school at Jayobo National Highschool, eventually playing good enough to be one of the representatives of Iloilo in the Palarong Pambansa.

After her stint in high school, she was offered an athletic scholarship to play in college at West Visayas State University. Due to financial difficulty, she accepted the offer, a move later proven to be a right one as she led her team to three regional championships, on top of three MVPs.

After she graduated in college, she had to work in Hong Kong as a domestic helper to sustain her siblings' education and family needs.

"My priority is always my family and my parents can't support my three siblings in university, that’s why I choose to help them kahit anong trabaho po para makapag work ako. I applied to Hong Kong as a domestic helper.”

But as fate would have it, even in a country where basketball is the third-ranked sport, she was still able to play competitive basketball in both Hong Kong and Macau where she won MVPs and led her team to multiple championships.

"When I arrived there, may basketball league of OFW’s and fil-foreign sa Hong Kong at sumali ako, then nakilala ako sa Hong Kong kaya minsan hinuhugot ako sa Macao to play there."

Unfortunately, she was not spared of the negative effect of the pandemic that hit the whole world as she was laid off by her employer due to financial crisis, forcing her to leave Hong Kong.

But as the door closed in that country, a window opened in her motherland and again lady luck would knock on her door once again as WNBL-Philippines started accepting applicants for their first draft in which out of over 700 hopefuls, she was one of the 177 applicants who were accepted to join the draft combine which gave her the confidence and mentality to get drafted by a team that will utilize her skills.

Shana gave an advice to young girls who want to play basketball or are being discouraged of playing basketball: "Sa lahat ng kids na kung ano ang desire ng puso nyo kung gusto nyo maglaro ng basketball or whatever sports you like, kung marunong kayo wag kayong mahiya kasi babae kayo. Kung meron kayong skills go for it show it kasi binigay ni God yan sa'yo."

She is the epitome of a true Filipina, whatever happens in life you still have to push forward to make your dream a reality and continue to fight on.

For the next two months, Aquino will go door-to-door, visiting prospects and their families about the possibility of representing the Philippines in international competitions. On the radar are Vanessa De Jesus, Mei-Loni Henson, Ella Fajardo, and Faith Curry.

Slated in 2021 are the Southeast Asian Games, FIBA 3X3 World Cups, among others.

Some of the States Aquino plans to go to are New Jersey, Washington, and California.

Fil-Am Nation Select is also organizing a couple of combines for prospects.

“We actually would be setting up a combine sometime in January in Los Angeles as well as in Chicago,” Fil-Am Nation founder Cris Gopez bared on an episode of So She Did! presented by SMART Sports.

“Our hope is for them to hopefully navigate a lot of these top athletes to possibly get their paperwork taken care of if we can do that that definitely puts us in a better situation.”

Happy Holiday Sir...as for coach Pat-Pat A. is doing well it is one heck of a commitment, going house to house or door to door are ain't that easy, his dealing with different attitude and personality on each fences meaning he had the tongue to convince(?) all his prospect(s) that representing our beloved THREE STARS AND A SUN is a noble thing to do not only patriotically but also financially as well, moving forward. What I really got the attention is his statement..

As per my understanding on this statement, is he the one who will do the dirty works or he had an Embassy Guy who will be part of his entourage once he enter the fences and sit down and talk to the family about documents for the processing of the passport? Goodluck on coach Pat on this and the Fil-Am Nation team on this sweeping activities during this cold winter season at uncles Sam's backyard.
