  • Between Barroca & Casio, I'll go for Barroca
Yap & Lassiter, I'll go for Lassiter
    M. Ganuellas & Lutz, I'll choose Lutz
Arwind vs. Abueva, I'll go for Arwind
Belga vs. Slaughter, I'll go for Slaughter, hands down

Among the underrated players I feel should be considered in the pool: Allein Maliksi & Vic Manuel
"A king may move a man, a father may claim a son, but that man can also move himself, and only then does that man truly begin his own game. Remember that howsoever you are played or by whom, your soul is in your keeping alone, even though those who presume to play you be kings or men of power, when you stand before God, you cannot say, 'But I was told by others to do thus,' or that virtue was not convenient at the time. This will not suffice." - King Baldwin IV

    • Another thing I find interesting is that Tab was initially unimpressed by Slaughter until he saw how Greg performed in the 2nd conference against taller imports.

As I reiterated here countless times, Greg is no Junemar, BUT he is JF's equal. I even dare say that they are the Russel and Chamberlain of today's PBA. They are both fast learners; they both actually have mid range to longer range shots; both are good defenders and low post players.. the difference is... GS is more defensive minded and more of a center type player, who is a better individual and team defender than JF; and JF is a lot more better offensively.. individually or team wise... and he is not a Center.. JF is more of a traditional with more range PF. but both can play the PF-C position properly.

It is a matter of time when people will realize this.. those who have watched these two from their CESAFI days already sees the potential these two guys can do.

sO THERE, definitely those two guys should be shoo ins for the next gilas team.

          • if we will follow tab's preference...

            my choice:
            3 point guards
            castro
            cabagnot
            romeo/lee

            4 wings
            lassiter
            chan
            abueva
            norwood

            5 bigs
            pingris
            de ocampo
            fajardo
            blatche
            slaughter

everyone in gilas 2.0 is not a shoo-in but fajardo is an asterisk... he was surprised that junmar was able to keep pace with the team's tempo in spain

anyway, its a really contradiction since if the PBA officiating allows lots of let-gos and use of hands, junmar should be more dominating in fiba because he is somewhat limited in the pba by those no-calls on his defenders. i feel tab will device some plays specific for junmar to maximize his talent and style of play.
the problem is FIBA bigmen most of them if not the same height with him its a lot bigger and taller not to mention more skilled defensively than the ones playing in the PBA.

agreed. but the thing here is junmar was never really allowed to make his regular moves with gilas as he was merely a role player who scores from drop passes.

with tab, being one of the "centerpieces" i hope he gets more freedom to do his thing. lets see if those spin moves and jumpers and the regular kalabaw moves work - because in the international game with lesser "let-go" contact daw he should get the calls, right? or maybe tab is wrong to say that the pba officating allows more contact than fiba?

imo, i never really believe this talk about pba calls being more or less of something compared to fiba. if there is a difference, i guess, pba calls are more consistent while fiba calls are unpredictable depending on the tournament and the refs. if there is something our national coaches should teach our players it is how to adjust to the unpredictability of the officiating because sometimes it will be very similar to the pba and sometimes very different.

That is Tab's regular preference. But he did say that for Asia, size might not be as important. He was indicating that he might get more point guards, as some of them can slide over to SG. This is why I think it would be 4 PGs 4 wings and 4 bigs. Based on our last Asian stint we didn't lack for the traditional centers, Douthit and Fajardo manned the slot well enough. But we didn't have anybody to guard Lebanon's mobile centers. This is the reason why I think only one local (natural born Pinoy) center will make the final 12. If they are going to get a 5th big it would be a taller mobile defender like maybe Almazan. But if the choice would be for a 5th big or a 4th PG, Tab might go for a 4th PG, to ensure we can maintain our fast pace of play. If there are only 4 bigs, Pingris position might be reconsidered if there is another big out there who can help us match-up with the mobile centers of Lebanon.

There will already 3 wing/guard defensive specialist in Norwood, Abueva and potentially Barroca. The question would be if there is a big out there who can better match-up with the mobile Asian bigs than Pingris.

                  • My take:

                    Castro, Barroca, Lee, K.Ravena
                    Chan, Lassiter, Wright,
                    Norwood, Abueva, Parks
                    DeOcampo, Aguilar, Blatche
                    Fajardo, Slaughter

                    • My 12 man Gilas Line up

                      Pg- castro, lee, barroca
                      Sg- lassiter, Park
                      Sf- Norwood, abueva
                      Pf- blatche, Ping, Ranidel
                      C- Fajardo, Greg

I don't like Romeo and Santos playing for our national team. for romeo he is too small for shooting guard position, he can't play Point guard cause of too much fancy dribbling and Ball hog. For Santos if he play powerforward position he is undersized, if he play smallforward position he is too slow to defend.

Between Almazan and Rosario for a mobile defensive big ( to defend stretched 4;s) and pick and rolls , who would you get ?

I will pick the one who is not afraid to take a shot even in 3 point line.

For this one I go for Troy.

I'll pick Rosario. He's upside is higher than Almazan and he has better lateral movement to be on the perimeter.

Almazan's development under Guiao has been disappointing so far.

                            • For those who have seen Abueva play the point, do you think this is a viable suggestion and or option for Gilas?
