When Chot made his "reaching out" speech after winning his 5th coach of the year award, I knew there was something in between the lines. He knew in the future, he will need both Yeng (Paul Lee) and Ato's (SMB players) blessings to lend him the players he wanted for the NT.

In defense of Manny V. Pangilinan, sportsman
By Recah Trinidad
Philippine Daily Inquirer 11:52 pm | Wednesday, October 12th, 2011
This serves as an apology to Manny V. Pangilinan, the country’s driven sports patron cum laude.
For the record, we should all be eternally grateful to this committed tycoon for his boundless kindness and generosity.
Unfortunately, my frantic call to reform the Smart Gilas national basketball team had been misconstrued as a criticism of Pangilinan and his program.
* * *
Sorry for that, I must admit my message had also been vague and garbled, the way it was received and interpreted by certain concerned parties.
I was trying to state, clearly as I could, the urgent need for improvement and redirection of the team.
In the process, it was impossible not to state the honest truth that coach Rakjo Toroman, although he had taught the team to play “with bearing and class” fell short in the final reckoning.
For the record, there was no mention on my part about totally discarding the system “inspired by the Northern Cement Consolicated (NCC) team of yesteryears.”
That program spearheaded by super tycoon Danding Cojuangco was indeed worth emulating.
There was nothing wrong in pursuing the thrust and format of the NCC program, which was obviously being tried by the Smart Gilas national team.
But it must also be stated here, clearly enough I hope, that in the case of Torman, he had the winning formula, the dream support, the players he wanted, not to mention the plot and theory.
Unfortunately, he failed to convert these to winning reality.
* * *
There was nothing wrong with the MVP program.
But there were glaring flaws in the Toroman system.
Complained one concerned reader: “What’s garbled about three of our top shooters going 0-21? Those were not forced or ill-timed shots… proof that it was a case of nerves, as Toroman implied.”
A review would show these shooters failed to find the mark trying from their so-called comfort zone.
What became doubly clear was the fact that these gunners got jammed and were rendered totally uncomfortable by opposing guards with sharper, stronger basics.
* * *
“Recah took Smart Gilas to task for not stopping what he himself called uncontainable jump shots; in short, it seems we are complaining about getting our hearts broken and blaming Toroman for it.”
To explain, those killer end shots in the game against South Korea became unstoppable only because our players were not equipped with the proper defensive basics.
Our stars could not do anything to contain opposing shooters who were scoring with glee propelled by the so-called wrong-foot take-off.
* * *
To specify, those impossible shots were not too different from the ones that had made Korea’s Shin Dong Pa a legend.
Of course, there was one great Filipino, the immortal Ed Ocampo, who was always there to contain Shin.
Ocampo rode on solid even-footed defensive skills, honed through tough hours on the football field.
OK, this opinion on the shortcomings of our team would predictably be contested.
However, there was another glaring flaw at the team middle, in the person of naturalized slotman Marcus Douthit.
* * *
“He was very predictable, a one-track attacker with an awful weak side,” said Dr. Fernando Carrascoso, who bared he had worked behind the scenes in helping plan, prepare and finally form Danding Cojuangco’s vastly successful NCC national team.
Carrascoso said they agreed to form the team only after they had gathered the right players that would suit designated roles.
NCC was not a hit-and-miss program.
Much unlike Smart Gilas which had to frantically grope for form until it hit the dead-end.LABAN KUNG LABAN! KAYA NATIN PILIPINAS!

Basketball body to name its 16 choices
by Rey Joble
THE ball is now on the hands of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas.
Given the authority to select the pool of players, whom they will tap to compose the next Smart Gilas national team, the country’s governing body in basketball is expected to come up with a list that will be submitted to the pro league for the board’s approval.
“It’s our turn to make a move. We will come up with a list at the soonest possible time. From now, until the end of the year, we will be in our planning stage. It is during this period we will select the composition of the coaching staff and players who will form up the national pool in preparation for the 2013 FIBA-Asia Championship,” Barrios told Manila Standard in a telephone interview.
PBA chairman Mamerto Mondragon said two weeks ago that the board has agreed to lend as much as 16 players to compose the national pool, on the condition that the players will only compete in the FIBA-Asia Championship, a qualifying tournament for the World Basketball Championship and the Olympics.
In last week’s meeting, PBA commissioner Chito Salud sat down with SBP officials to know the needs of the team that will be formed up before the year ends. The PBA is one of the stakeholders of the SBP, where the pro league has a total of four seats.
“Commissioner Chito asked us to submit a list and he will bring it to the board for approval,” added Barrios. “The number of players who will be loaned is flexible, but the board has to know it. Baka naman nga kasi merong isang team na 10 ang players na hihiramin sa kanila, hindi nga talaga puwede ‘yun.”
Barrios, a former PBA commissioner, also said that the group wants to maintain continuity of the Smart Gilas program, especially after the squad matched the country’s previous highest placing of fourth place in the FIBA-Asia Championship since 1987.
“Having continuity doesn’t mean that we’re bringing Rajko Toroman back as coach. Rajko is neither in nor out of the team from the time he met with SBP president Manny V. Pangilinan up to the time he returns here on Nov. 15,” said Barrios. “Nothing is cast in stone at this time. Whether Rajko will remain coach, become a consultant or will not be part of the team is yet to be decided.”Last edited by nardy; 10-12-2011, 07:13 PM.LABAN KUNG LABAN! KAYA NATIN PILIPINAS!

Yeng Guiao: Neither the 3 year program or coach Rajko was the factor for the success of Smart-Gilas.
Tab Baldwin: He’s [Rajko] the big reason, maybe the biggest reason they got as far as they did.

If those could not be totally eliminated, how can it be minimized. There are things which are beyond our control and of course there would also some limitations like the Financial Budget wherein one has work within.
But surely come January everything would be set and ready to go. However please be reminded there are other things the SBP has to give equal importance to like our Womens, Boys and Girls National Teams then there's the Grassroots programs and the different National Competitions which the NSA is planning to organize.

MVP wants local coach for Olympics qualifier
SINGAPORE -- When the Philippine national team sees action in the Olympic qualifying tournament in 2011, Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) president Manny V. Pangilinan wants a Filipino coach to handle the team and no one else.
This was Pangilinan's reply when the issue of hiring Serbian Rajko Toromas was raised again during a dinner he hosted for the PBA delegation Saturday at the Marina Mandarin Hotel here
"Certainly, gusto ko makitang mukha ng head coach Filipino," said.
The SBP has been getting the flak, especially from the Basketball Coaching Association of the Philippines (BCAP), for signing the 53-year-old Toroman to a three-year lucrative deal.
Toroman's main task is to prepare the national team for the 2011 FIBA-Asia Championship, the qualifying tournament to the 2012 London Games.
Toroman earned instant fame when he steered a tall Iranian squad to the FIBA-Asia title two years ago that earned them a slot in the recent Beijing Games.
Right now, Toroman has been going around the country in the hope of discovering potential players for the national team. He's now a regular spectator of PBA games.
Toroman, according to Pangilinan, recently held tryouts for 35 college players.
The field has been trimmed to 25, according to the telecommunication mogul, which include 2008 UAAP Most Valuable Player (MVP) Rabeh Al-Hussaini of Ateneo, Rico Maierhofer of La Salle, James Sena of Jose Rizal University and Ogie Menor of three-time NCAA champion San Beda College.
The team has been invited to participate in an invitational tournament in China from Dec. 16 to 22, and Toroman will be calling the shots for the RP Team.
When it comes to big tournaments like the Olympics, as well as the FIBA World Championships, Pangilinan made it clear that Filipino coaches will definitely handle the coaching chores of the nationals.
"Para sa akin pagdating ng important tournaments, give it to the Filipino," Pangilinan said. "We don't yet know who the future coach will be but he definitely has to be a Filipino."
The team of Toroman will also compete in next year's Southeast Asian Games in Laos, as well as the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou in China.
It is different from the one that coach Yeng Guioa will handle, as it is an all-pro team tasked to earn a seat in the 2010 World Championships in Turkey when it competes next year in the FIBA-Asia Championship also in Guangzhou, China.
On the other hand, Pangililinan also said that the SBP would help in improving the basketball venue for Laos SEA Games.
That includes the possibility of giving the old hardcourt or flooring and the goal posts to Laos, which could cost an estimated P500,000, instead of constructing a brand coliseum for P4 million.
"We could save P3.5 million, gamitin na lang natin ditto para i-improve 'yung sarili nating venues," Pangilinan said.

A lot has been said about the failure of the program to get us to the Olympics or the World qualifiers where the elite world basketball teams play. A lot of geniuses, intellectuals and pseudo-intellectuals have given their fair share of analysis on the outcome of the program. Now that the smoke has cleared, let me give you an insight of FIBA officials, NBL coaches and players in Oceania. some of whom I have talked in depth and tried to milk them for their knowledge and experience to try to move forward.
1. Did Rajko fail in his mission.
If the question was to get the Phil to the Olympics and to the world's then the answer is yes.
But what cannot be said by a simple yes or no answer is this. We are full of EXCUSES. Can't train because i"m too tired, can't give 100 percent because I'm injured. (we are not new to this excuses)
When I say excuses, Rajko did so well that he was able to put our fate in our own hands. Rajko did not lose the world qualifier for us, we did...
he put us in a situation where all we have to do is to shoot those damn free throws. no defensive pressure, just free throws. Rajko can teach our players all the set patterns, defensive stops and all the tricks of the trade. It doesn't go easier than that last game. shoot the damn free throws . sure we can use Toro as an escape goat and you can put Baldwin or spolstra in there, it will still be the same, shoot the free throws. The last free throws were the most precious free throws in the entire history of the Gilas program- they were the big shots, they were the money balls. I have been through a lot of games where it has been won or lost by the free throw and this is what I say to the boys.
"I can teach you all that I know, I make you stronger, faster and game smarter but one thing I cannot give you, I cannot give you my heart.
Our boys need to put in the pressure cooker time and time and time and time again and it will still not guarantee success.
This is why I say Kiefer is special- he could have hit all of those free throws when it mattered.
My suggestion: We do not purchase hearts, we grow them. Get them young and put them through tough games not blowouts. the closer the games, the better for development.

This forum has the most impatient basketball fans in the Philippines and the SBP and PBA do not know it.
While waiting, it would be more productive to repair the tall young men who are still serviceable players. For one, the battle of underwhelming centers -- Sison vs. Ballesteros -- is as bad as advertised, and too painful to be seen except by the blind.
These two guys need to be good employees if they want to have at least ten years of well-paid longevity in the PBA. Voluntary drills appropriate for centers must be executed by these two during their free times. These would include, as a minimum: (a) 500 mid-range (10-15 feet) jump shots and layups a day, with the ball released at least 11 feet high (the backboard can be marked at 11 feet for easy line-of-sight confirmation), of which 80 percent must be made; (b) 500 dunks a day from at least 10 feet out, of which 90 percent must be made; and (c) 500 above-the-rim rebounds a day, initiated from at least 10 feet out. If the performance is not that good, strength, conditioning and plyometric training must be undertaken until a, b, and c are reliably completed. Siuch drills would require patience, but I'm sure that these young men would not want to become as pathetic as that wasted center named Eman, and would want to earn more than Chot Reyes.
Oh, if the two young centers can complete these drills, few PBA guards and forwards would want to mess around with them in real play. These quiet drills bring out the explosiveness that you can take in any international competition, and to any bank.

Of course, this is all but conjecture at best but...
It brings to the fold a hint at a justification as to why I've always felt that team Gilas was held back.
It is in the development of personnel where this designed dimunition to me, is most glaringly on display.
Exhibit, the slow development for "home grown" ballers (where supply is at best), counter productive and developmentally unwise "small ball", Gilas players playing at compromised roles or positions, and the inflexible persistence at exclusivity for reliance on offensive production from the naturalized resource. (putting all the eggs in one basket entails the real danger of having minimal or no ability for gametime or play by play adjustments, plus from a developmental aspect, the naturalized resource is the weakest in a supply chain).
He may have had initial reservations about the original premise by which his hiring was based upon but he was wise enough and decided to keep the lid shut while he worked to fulfill the kinks to conform and suit it to his liking.
Apparently, he may not have relished the thought of going through the old pitfall of "magtanim" and "magbayo" while somebody else later reap the harvest with relative ease.
He had already been "jobbed" in his last gig before with the Iranian national team, sure as hell in his mind, a grizzler like him doesn't or shouldn't deserve a twice over. Not if he can help it.
Somehow, his stint feels that of one which is compromised. Actions he'd undertaken may have been made to increase his importance to the team more than the team's interest in improving. This follows the order to ensure a revision of the earlier stipulations to his hiring thereby securing a further stay, only this time, head coach all the way and beyond!
Hence, the saga of Gilas 1.0 ....good enough but in constant need to over-achieve in order to just be competetive.
To put in perspective the accomplishment of Gilas in Wuhan, let's stack theirs against that of NCC (the last RP team to win gold in FIBA) in that golden game against China, coach Ron Jacobs at the helm for the RP colors for that endeavor, had designed as preparation, 13 plays to utilize against the vaunted power and height of China. He played the first three... well, it was all the plays needed to beat the Chinese national team. Blow off they did, to a team bannered by 7'10", Mu Tieh Tzu, and company, into basketball oblivion!
This could all be a ball of wax, mind you, it was just my two cents ... well then... keep Toroman!
Hell, NO!Last edited by Sam (a.k.a.) Tuwid; 10-13-2011, 12:38 AM.
