Echavez to compete in China swimfest
    Cebu Daily News
    First Posted 07:28:00 05/17/2011

MULTI-TITLED Cebuana swimmer Loren Dale Echavez will be heading a lean but mean swimming delegation, that will be competing in the 26th Summer Universiade on August 12 in Shenzhen, China.

This is the first time that the country will be competing in the Universiade, a biennial sporting event that gathers the universities from all over the world to compete in events such athletics, archery, beach volleyball, badminton, basketball, chess, and table tennis.

Philippine Swimming League (PSL) chairperson and former senator Nikki Coseteng of Diliman Preparatory School and PSL president Susan Papa have formally submitted names of the athletes taking part in the Shenzhen Universiade.

Coseteng has been designated as team manager of the Philippine swimming team that is competing in the Summer Universiade.

Two other Cebu schools will be representing the country in the Universiade. These will be the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) in the beach volleyball event and the University of Cebu (UC) for the basketball event.

Basketball: Phl in Pool C in men’s Universiade basketball grouping
Posted by admin2 on May 18th, 2011 and filed under Sports.

The Philippines has been bracketed in Pool C of the men’s basketball competition at the 26th Summer Universiade in Shenzhen, China come August this year.
Serbia, which played host to the 2009 Universiade version, scored a 73-51 decision over Russia in the men’s basketball finals two years ago.
The United States downed Israel, 91-80, to secure the bronze medal.
This time, 24 countries are participating in the men’s basketball event of the 2011 Shenzhen Universiade, where the Philippine team landed its Pool C placement following the draw held last April 16.
The four pools or groups are:
Pool A — China, Germany, Romania, Brazil, Czech Republic and United Arab Emirates
Pool B — Serbia, Turkey, Canada, Australia, Republic of South Africa and Hong Kong
Pool C — Russia, Lithuania, Ukraine, Japan, Philippines and New Zealand
Pool D — United States, Israel, Finland, Korea, Hungary and Mexico.
The 2011 August Universiade is the biggest-ever so far with more than 3,000 athletes, coaches and officials from a record-setting 188 countries taking part.
The 1st Summer Universiade was held in Turin, Italy in August-September 1959. A total of 1,407 athletes from 43 countries saw action in seven sports events.
Expectedly, host Italy collected the most number of gold medals with 18 and topped the overall medal list with 38 medals (18-10-10).
As a sidebar, long before America’s Michael Jordan became a legendary player in the professional National Basketball Association (NBA), His Airness saw action with Team USA at the 1983 Universiade.
Jordan powered the Americans to a gold-medal finish at the 1983 Universiade in Edmonton, Canada.

same question as to why Graham Lim has an influential spot in BAP, you choose someone who... shares the same interests.

That was why I clamored for a Smart Gilas Team B training in Cebu for them to be exposed in Euro basketball.

Hoping they give a good fight using their "small" ball team plays.

Pools A to D are all group of Death. The consolation here is to see how Junmar play against a team with someone who stands 6'10" plays as a small forward.

I think SBP should communicate with the Universiade regarding its status as the official basketball organization recognized by FIFA. Along this line, SBP should clamor for SBP-sanction University/college (Champion) as Philippine Team to the Universiade.... It is logical that the Champion of PCCL should be the ones representing RP.
