Alex Nuyles is the real thing. He is not just for barangays, just like a lot of PBA players.

        missing super athletes

Factually, the Smart Gilas, as had already been pointed out earlier by most posters, made a mistake by getting mostly "Steady Eddies" in its line-up. No serious international team can survive without several super athletes in its line up. You can win with Steady Eddies, but you can never mount a serious fightback -- an every-game feature in all international championship rounds -- without super athletes.

Just look at the the top five teams in the NBA over the last decade. All have been powered by at least two guards or forwards -- or even super centers like a prime Shaq -- that are athletically superior to their counterparts in other teams.

Oh, did I mention why Miami spent like crazy to have Dwade, Lebron and Bosh to even have a decent chance of taking down the prideful Lakers and Celtics????

Nuyles, like several local guards, has a genuine 300HP, 50nm Mitsu Evo engine in his body. By no means can "favorite" Smart Gilas guards like Barroca even come close to him in height, athleticism and game-changing powers.

Further, unlike Aguilar's, Nuyles' dunking prowess regularly produces wins; the guy knows when to go on a dunking spree. Another two super athletes, preferably with a Subaru WRX in them, is urgently necessary, as the Philippine team tends to be sickeningly small. The only real athlete there -- Williams -- is getting older and has already a blood disorder.

You can't win international championships with steady valedictorians. You need the knights in the service of satan to shut up other teams.

US-SCFA crowned champions in Hong Kong

HONG KONG - The Southern California Fukienese Association (SCFA) of the US put a final exclamation point on its campaign here by beating China's Xin Cheng Holdings basketball team, 93-78, at the 18th 3-D Gold Super Kung Sheung Cup held at the Queen Elizabeth Stadium in Wan Chai.

The Los Angeles-based SCFA, a team composed mostly of former collegiate players in the US, beat all of its opponents in the tournament in double figures, including host Hong Kong by 30 points, 88-58.

Its only close game was against the Philippines, represented here by Ateneo de Manila and Adamson University, which almost pulled off an upset against the Americans in the semi-final round before succumbing, 91-85.

Xin Cheng Holdings, representing China's Fujian province, earned its championship berth by beating Hong Kong, 72-59, in its own semi-final duel, but could not get its shooting game going against the highly physical Americans.

SCFA stood head and shoulders above the competition here in terms of heft, athleticism and experience. Its frontline paraded a legit 7-footer in David Erickson, 6'9 Robert Curtis, 6'7 Jerome Moton and 6'7, 260-lb 'Baby Shaq' Tarron Williams (200-F-76, college: Cal.St.-San Bernar.).

The Hong Kong National Team, the defending champions, settled for third place by beating the Philippine 'Blue Birds', 61-45. The Filipinos, composed of collegiate players who are having their first taste of international hoops, looked drained from last night's tightly fought game with the Americans, but nonetheless gave a good account for themselves in the tournament with their passionate brand of basketball.

As always, we just had to save our worst game for last. Just several hours after playing our best game vs. the Americans, we came out flat and tired vs. Hong Kong, which played its best shooting game in the tourney. They shot at least 12 treys against us.

Pity that this was the only day the tournament was broadcast live on HK television -- once again breeding the false perception that HK hoops owns pinoy hoops.

We badly needed Greg Slaughter, Emman Monfort and Ryan Buenafe in this game.

Still, much appreciation for our boys who played their hearts out and had their first rude taste of international hoops. This also serves as a good refresher course for Coach Norman who will be steering our team at the SEA Games.

I think he's about 6'1" to 6'2" (can't tell now with the kind of basketball shoes today), and has about the same athleticism as Paul Alvarez when he crashed into the university basketball scene. I hope he doesn't turn out as extremely stupid as Alvarez though, or he'll end up with a sekyu's bullet in his ass too. But this boy is really explosive -- an element that is completely missing from Smart Gilas from Day One -- and I wouldn't be surprised if he throws it down very hard in the face of players like Slaughter and Fajardo in a regular game. He is that bold (or perhaps that reckless). If he is lucky, he will have the explosive moves of Samboy Lim, without the reckless diagonal leaps that almost kills this player every time he attacks the rim. If he develops rifle grenade offensives at the three-point line, he will be very difficult to stop, and can turn into a good opponent demoralizer like Samboy.

You will absolutely need this kind of player when you take on fighters with the warrior spirit like those from Iran and Barcelona.

it was expected that Japeth Aguilar and Rey Guevarra were supposed to be the explosive players a-la Samboy Lim at Gilas but sadly they were not able to do so due to injuries and a number of other things.

The player that came nearest to that mode is Mac Baracael.

We're the heartbreak kids of Asian basketball. =P But we'll break out of the rut.

Alex Nuyles is the real thing. Mad hops, tough as nails, and one of few who has the 'eye of the tiger'. Decent perimeter / three-point shooting, but can be improved. He, together with Fajardo, should be invited to Coach Norman's SEA Games team.

Salva's got beautiful moves (his personal tutorial from Kobe Bryant is paying off); however, is a little too small for his post play and should therefore show more consistency with his perimeter shots.

Kirk Long was our steadiest player in HK -- while he's a natural SG, he played great at PG. Too bad he's not eligible for any Philippine team.

It is precisely practice tournaments like the 18th Super Kung Sheung Cup where we should continue sending our upcoming potential young national team players.
Thus, sending ateneo and adamson selection was the right choice so the young players will get experience battling bigger foreign players.

Anyone who wants to replace a coach because his dwarf team keeps losing against bigger teams is wishing for a miracle and should get a magician. A more practical solution is to get reinforcements unless one is content to wait a few more years in the hope that the dwarf players will grow wings and fly over their defenders. PBA reinforcements will not guarantee a championship, but it will guarantee close losses which is enough to make me happy.

They need testosterone shots to bring out the animal in them. Thats why when I form teams for our pickup games, i select hairy guys because they usually are the ones with lots of aggression or I also listen to their voice if its a low bass - another sign of high testosterone.

Here's another tip, girls with low bass voice are very good
