When will the NBA play its first game in the Phils.?

The NBA just announced its first pre-season game in Taipei between the Indiana Pacers and the Denver Nuggets on October 8, 2009. Iin this basketball-crazy country of 90 Million Filipinos, was it an economic decision for the NBA to overlook the Philippines and choosing Taiwan instead? They say it would cost millions on hosting an NBA game....anybody can share? Are there any other venues aside from Araneta Center which could host the first ever NBA game on RP soil?

Once we have a gambling dome like the Venecian in Macau. I think PAGCOR wanted that vision and a spokesman from PAGCOR boldly said that NBA teams on exhibition mode are not too far away once the gambling dome is constructed.

That was in 2006.
 
If I remember correctly, the Washington Bullets led by Wes Unseld played here during the late 70's decade, 78 I think. ( I was not an NBA aficionado back in those days)

Yup back in the 70s, NBA teams used to come to Manila and played MICAA/PBA teams... that change ever since...
 
if RP can build a state of the art arena that fits for NBA games. during the 70's araneta coliseum or the big dome is still new and was considered as the biggest dome that time.

Araneta Coliseum looks good...the Mecca of Philippine Basketball...I forgot who originally quoted that, was it Noli Eala? :) btw, Araneta Coliseum is considered one of the better if not the best host for indoor events not only in the country but also in Asia. :)
 
i agree with that^, i don't think the venue is the problem. But financially, we really can not do it unless a major, major backer finances the entire thing. Sure we can fill-up our first-class stadium but even that is not enough for the entire expenses of such a big event (yes, they even pre-season NBA games will cost us millions)
 
manila is safe right?? and PNP and AFP will do the rest... but lets see... even though the ticket will rise to 10t or 15t many will still watch it...

I can't remember... I wasn't born then... I just read it in books or from the old-timers...

I doubt those game were competitive.. probably more of an exhibition harlem-style... but I think back then were better than those teams that followed them... Kareem and Magic form their own teams to play in Manila in 1995.. then there's the Shaq-led selection and a Rodman-led selection...
 
in the shaq event, we lost badly right?haha
abbarrientos is the only player to score.2 pts for team pinas..marlou aquino didn't defend shaq..he's scared..it was jeff cariaso who was so brave to stop a rampaging shaq from a fast break..shaq vs cariaso..cariaso looked brave from trying to stop shaq.but when shaq got closer and closer jeff ran away like a kid who saw a ghost..haha that was hella funny!

i think it was just 3 on 12? right? shaq and two other blacks vs team pinas?


in 70's only 10 point lead by Washington bullets vs our team pinas..jawo and mon fernandez plus 3 imports played against washington bullets..that was my memory of what i've read in some forum before..i dont remember what forum is that..i'm just a kid now..i wasn't fortunate enough to witness it..tsk tsk..

Nope they're not playing the RP Team.. they played a PBA Selection since not all the top players participated... the game is just for entertainment and its only known for Shaq carrying Johnny A. and Locsin (???) to dunk on the hoop...

Team USA used to play RP Teams and MICAA teams as well... I read once that the 1954 RP Team that finished third in the World Champs played Team USA in Manila before the tournament...
 
i hope never. i truly believe that philipino b'ball should look to europe for guidance and not usa. go back to your roots phil b'ball, i say. you guys don't need nba bullshit

Bonel Balingit did a decent job bumping Shaq in that game. and i remember Shaq carried johnny A for a dunk hahaha that was funny
