lets just hope that the people in power will forget about their pride and work together... about the provincial thingy, i am glad to say that in our province of agusan del sur, the provincial governor held an annual basketball tournament for 18 and under boys but the problem is after the tournament the boys seems dont know where to go after and some of them just went drugs and tambays... SBP or BAP never sanctioned this tournaments which for me is wrong... in order to develop good grassroots program the SBP should coordinate with the local officials of each provinces... i think the SBP is focusing so much on the developmental team and NBTC,, they tend forget about their other programs which they are responsible with...

develop basketball all over the country and strengthen the provincial leagues.

the RP team does not belong to some sectors only. the philippines is not metro manila, cebu, or admu.

ito ang tama

trans: Of all I have read this simple quote is the best opinion:D

What does the philippine team need to watch out for? BAP!!!

Internal politics in SBP will just breathe life to that worthless organization.

Another thing Team Philippines need to watch out for:

Giles a hot prospect for Middle East teams

JAKARTA – If they want CJ Giles, officials of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas should act fast.

Jordan and Lebanon are hot on the Smart Gilas import's tracks, signifying their intention to acquire the 6-foot-11 Giles as a naturalized player to strengthen their national teams for this year's Fiba-Asia Championship and probably the 2011 edition of the same tournament.

Even Iran, the reigning Fiba-Asia champion, has inquired about the availability of Giles, pressing the panic button for the SBP to make a rewarding offer he cannot resist.

”We better act fast,'' said SBP executive director Noli Eala. ``We should sit down as soon as possible and decide if we really want CJ (Giles) or not.''

Eala said Jordan coach Mario Palma expressed interest on Giles as well as Lebanon's Fouad Abou Chakra.

Jordan and Lebanon are strong contenders for the Fiba-Asia Championship in September but both are handicapped with an ageing lineup compared to Iran.

Palma, who coached Angola in the 2006 World Championships in Saitama, Japan and the 2008 Beijing Olympics, has been asking around about the expiration of Giles' contract with the Smart Gilas Pilipinas National Team.

Monetary-wise, Middle East countries don't mind spending millions of dollars just to land a precious and valuable gem like Giles.

Iran, for example, has been paying its import Jackson Vromann, a former New Orleans Hornets stringer in the NBA, a whopping US$100,000 (P4.8 million) a month.

That's apart from the won-game bonuses and the $10,000 (P480,000) incentive for the top three scorers of the team every game.

Giles, by far, has been the most impressive import in the Fiba-Asia Champions Cup in terms of talent, skill, mind-set and attitude.

The double-figure average of 17.6 in scoring and 9.3 in rebounds after four games are also tangible pieces of evidence that the 23-year-old former Los Angeles Laker draftee is no fluke.

``If we get Japeth (Aguilar) and Rabeh (Al-Hussaini), he (Giles) will be the last piece of the puzzle for the team,'' said Smart Gilas Pilpinas National Team coach Rajko Toroman.

In the Fiba-Asia Championships, each country is allowed to hire one naturalized player. The SBP would have to seek a presidential decree for Giles to fit into the Smart Gilas RP Team.

Pundits also hatched the idea of processing the naturalization of Giles as soon as possible and include him in the PBA-backed RP Team coached by Yeng Guiao bound for the Fiba-Asia Championship in Tianjin, China slated September, the qualifying tournament for the 2010 World Championships in Turkey.

The 2011 Fiba-Asia Championships, the target of the Toroman-mentored Smart Gilas, is offering three Asian slots to the 2012 London Olympics.

According to Eala, China and Iran are the favorites to land the two seats in the 2011 Olympic qualifying while the last slot will be a battle royale among Lebanon, Jordan, Japan, Korea, Qatar and possibly the Philippines should Smart Gilas complete the necessary pieces of the puzzle.

if the Naturalization of CJ Giles can be fast tracked, the idea of lending him to the POWERADE together with the earlier offer of Japeth Aguilar to join Coach Yeng Guiao's team will surely benefit both the PBA-backed National Team and the SBP formed National Team. This could also be a way to get back the good working relationship between the PBA and SBP. And hopefully this would make Guiao happy and finally silence him from his negativeness towards Coach Rajko Toroman.

And most important is that it is for PILIPINAS.

I do agree
Giles and Aguilar would be a good addition to the Powerade team especially now that Kelly Williams and Thoss are injured
And having the Powerade team and Gilas team work together would be a benefit for everyone especially the National teams

Our ASEAN neighbors are getting better like Indonesia's game against the Gilast team. It will only be a matter of time that the other ASEAN countries get better in basketball hence the Philippines must also improve its skills and team plays. The PBA has been the root of our poor play in international tournaments. First the PBA keeps on playing the same team the same players every year, no variety, no improvement of skills and play. Second, it takes all the good players into the draft hence the national team does not have any formidable players. With the SBP having a 3 yr contract it is good that the players in the team will be there but the other good players who are not yet or do not want to be in the team because they would rather play in the PBA. Unless the PBA learns that it is not the best in ASIA or even ASEAN and play more international games the SBP will be a better team and will even win against the PBA teams in this next conference. With all this said, the Philippines is still not putting in the best team available. Use Toromans system and put the powerade team in the pool with the SBP then get Giles and one more naturalized center, then we have the best team available anytime in any tournament.

MVP should help us with this..this won't guarantee a sure championship though but he will help us with lots of things( and would put a smile on Taulava's face considering he is a work horse for the RP team for how many years now)

i dont think they could rush the naturalization of giles because right now the congress is still busy with cha cha and then they will have a vacation starting this june....

I think, a presidential decree only requires a signature from the "Cute Lady" of Malacanang. The Philippine congress has nothing to do with it. It's very much different when a lawmaker files a resolution making someone an honorary citizen that needs congressional hearing, passage and approval.

A good example is what Rep. Edgar San Luis of Laguna filing a House Resolution 1142, seeking to confer honorary Philippine citizenship on boxing coach Freddie Roach.

And back then, The "Apo" (Marcos) granted an instant Filipino citizenship to former Sri Langkan, Ronnie Nathanielsz by presidential proclamation. And it only requires the president's signature to make it into a decree.

The real question is......

Can we afford Giles?

I was surprised to see how much Iran was paying Vroman....I guess that explains his performance.

I really hope that the SBP acts on Giles naturalization ASAP

That's what you get in playing international, you get noticed by other teams and make you an offer you can't resist. "Resistance is futile, you must comply".....:D:

How much do we pay Giles again ?

i still remember the 6'5 chinese to be naturalized for our women national team but still no progress... election is fast approaching and they should act fast to get Giles... its hard for me to believe in that 100,000 dollars a month for Vroman... i think that is a minimum salary in the NBA...

Believe it !!!! A quality bigman in international basketball is really that expensive. And for a country such as the Philippines, that is a lot of money to give to only one person who has nothing to do but play basketball and we are not yet talking yet about the additional benefits and bonuses.

Would you think it would be wise to give a single player that kind of money when a lot of Filipinos are being laid-off or are jobless at the moment.

the SBP is hoping that CJ would be playing not just because of the money.
If you know the story of Priest Lauderdale, I'll say we must not get into a bidding war if it's only money which he wants or we might end up like Bulgaria which Naturalized Lauderdale years ago but up to this year Priest has not played a single game for the Bulgarian National Team despite getting all the money demands he initially asked for.

its just show our passion for basketball... spending lots of money for the sports... smart sports... :D

Hey we can get cheaper naturalized players but we are sure to get inferior performance...Quality comes with a price.Especially if its skills that they are selling.
