The Slam Dunk Scholarship, a program organized by the Slam Dunk basketball manga author Takehiko Inoue, selected Japanese high school seniors Daichi Taniguchi and Jimmy Hayakawa as the winners of its second annual competition last week. As part of the scholarship program, Taniguchi (pictured at right) and Hayakawa (pictured at left) will attend the South Kent college preparatory school in Connecticut from April of 2009 to May of 2010. The students' transportation, tuition, and living expenses are covered during their time in the United States. Inoue sponsors the scholarship with his I.T. Planning studio and his Slam Dunk publisher Shueisha.

Taniguchi is the center of Rakunan High School's basketball team in Kyoto in central Japan, while Hayakawa hails from Fukuoka Daiichi High School in Fukuoka in southern Japan. Narito Namizato won the first Slam Dunk Scholarship last year. So far, the only Japanese native to play in North America's National Basketball Association is Yuta Tabuse (Phoenix Suns, 2004).

Viz Media is publishing the Slam Dunk manga in North America.

Just curious out of technicality, if he haven't represented Japan in an official international basketball tournament would that mean he is still eligible to play for the Philippines ? If he is in deed good enough as advertized, anyone ?:D

Wait, if he was 16 or younger when he played for Japan he' still eligible to play for the philippines given some considerations are met.

can anyone confirm if jimmy played last u-18 championships in iran, i think he was on the roster

@astig pinoy

i'm a big fan of the Slam Dunk manga :D

Hayakawa-san, have you thought of playing college basketball in the Philippines after your stay in Connecticut? you are young enough to play in our college leagues but would have to wait for a year of residency before playing. your height and position suggests that you have the potential. in the meantime, we appreciate your info regarding the Japanese NT.

its not that big of a loss since he is 6'4", im sure we have tons of 6'4" players, but had he been 6'10" or taller and good too then yes, we would be kicking ourselves. Besides, if he is half-japanese, its better for him over there financially wise. now, if he turns out to be an awesome super-duper 6'4" then of course we will again kick our behind.

yes but he is 6'4 in highschool and plays guard. that means he is still growing. he could reach 6'6.

o well, we still have ray parks who is 6'3 and plays pg/sg and is only 15

Maybe SBP people and Sir Nardy can contact this Fil-Jap kid.

Sayang din naman.

I'm voting to have the moron who claimed he was Jimmy Hayakawa to be banned from this forum. And maybe the moderators can go after his other other alternicks, too.

This is serious business, we have people here who are in the position to take this seriously, and some dumb a_s ends up making fun out of it, wasting valuable time and money. Let's see who gets the last laugh.

By the way, I'm Christian Standardinger, and I'm coming next week to the Philippines to play. LOL. Just kidding.

great news nardz..hope they would find a way for him to go and play for RP..:)

is there a possibility he could join the RP-NT? isn't it there's a FIBA ruling once a player already plays for a NT of certain country he can't join another one?
