What does the Philippine team need to watch out for (vol III)

I watch several minutes of this game and china seems lost. got lots of turnovers then they can not shoot from perimeter or arc as you said. they got two new youngsters which i believe are 7 footers. I think they cut Wang ZhiZhi. I did not see him play or from their bench. Argentinian guards killed them with their penetration. China's ball passing are easily interfered. The two youngsters are not effective when you put body on them.

Argentina B/C beats China A 61-44 in the Stankovic Finals: http://cba.sports.sina.com.cn/stankovic/schedule/show/9077/

Yi Jianlian with 22pts and 9rebs in 24mins of play. China 0-14 from downtown.

this is most probably because of Argentina's tall/taller guards who can close down on shooters pretty quick. Its unheard of that China will hit 0 of 14 from downtown.

I hope this won't be a reflection of PH team where we cannot hit from the outside due to taller and just as quick defenders.

did you guys see the U19 championships? Looks like Team USA is slowly weeding out "midget"guards. Their U19 team guards were huge and tall.

Let's hope Ganuelas will develop quick and be part of our NT in the near future.

News: Chinese Taipei, Not Jordan, Looms As Toughest Early Test For Gilas In FIBA Asia, Warns Toroman

Chinese Taipei figures to be a tough early test for the Philippine national men’s basketball team early in the FIBA Asia Championship, according to international basketball veteran Rajko Toroman.

According to the Serbian coach who currently serves as consultant to Barako Bull in the PBA, the Taiwanese have become more formidable following the inclusion of naturalized center Quincy Davis in the lineup.

“Chinese Taipei has everything now after it got a naturalized player playing the position five,” said the former SMART-Gilas Pilipinas coach. “They will be very, very competitive in the coming FIBA Asia Championship.”

Davis averaged 18.9 points and 13.6 rebounds per game in Taiwan’s professional basketball league. He has been a force for Chinese Taipei in the William Jones Cup, helping his team to two wins in its first three games.

Gilas is set to play Chinese Taipei on August 3 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in the last day of the preliminary round. The contest is expected to be heated considering the state of relations between the Philippines and Taiwan, which has resulted in the latter’s withdrawal of its invitation for Gilas in the Jones Cup.

Aside from Davis, Chinese Taipei still has Tseng Weng-Ting to wreak havoc down low.

The ponytailed Tseng, who’s been in the national team for the last eight years, is a 6-foot-8 frontliner who has played for the Shanghai Sharks in China and Osaka Evessa in Japan.

Jordan not as strong

Toroman noted that Chinese Taipei, and not traditional powerhouse Jordan, figures to be the Philippines’ toughest assignment in Group A of the tournament.

“Jordan has Jimmy Baxter as a naturalized player, but the problem with him is that he hasn’t played with the squad that long so chemistry will be an issue. The team will also miss Sam Daghles and Rasheim Wright, two key players of the squad the past few years,” he added.

Toroman has helped in the preparations of the national team, attending the squad’s practice and coaching Barako Bull in a tuneup against Gilas.

He has extensive international experience, having piloted Iran to the Asian title in 2007 and the Philippines to a fourth-place finish in 2011.

I absolutely agree with this. So who's taking Chinese Taipei for granted now?

Chinese Taipei has always been a threat to all Asian teams, except the Philippines :D

Jokes aside, I still think Taipei will get massacred in MOA. Everyone seemed to have forgotten that they placed fifth in the recent EABA, needing a tremendous effort to narrowly defeat Mongolia in the battle for fifth. But that was without Quincy Davis.

Taiwan may have quality guards, but quite frankly, our guards are still a lot more superior in terms of well, everything, with the exception of 3 pt shooting. They don't have a decent post presence down low as well, except the naturalized guy. Pretty sure Marcus, Junemar and Beau will pound the the low post. Haven't seen Davis' game, but I'm pretty sure Pingris and the others will be able to negate his contributions.

bro, JuneMar, Beau and Pingris will have a hard time against Davis. The guy is nothing fancy but has good pair of hands(tapping the ball, blocking shots),good in positioning(also in sealing)and has awesome timing. He is fit to Taipe's game. The guards of Taipe will never be better than our guards. never. but they are very persistent, aggressive and they are good in attacking. Magaling pa chumamba kahit kengkoy shot. lol

I am impressed with their improvement but not yet saying that they are there. Other teams are also just 'playing' in this tournament. We'll see our 'real' opponents come FIBA Asia. And I'm hoping Iran will reach its peak form come August 1. They are a slow starter and what if they lose some games in 2 rounds, we might meet them in Quarter finals. lol we're doomed.

Most teams in the Jones Cup are just playing possum. They joined the tournament to simulate the game-time environment of FIBA-Asia. I hate to say this, but Taiwan might be playing 100 percent already.

If the guys except Douthit will have a hard time against him, then put Marcus him. :D Though unlike Ping, wala siyang gulang at puso. hihihihi. Anyway, if he gets through Marcus, there's always an excellent secondary defender in Japeth. yep, the Taiwanese guards will never be better than ours, and our players being very physical (and sometimes dirty) is a huge plus since CT guys are a bunch of pansies.

I'm also considered on the possibility of Iran losing to China and Korea :D They're pretty slow starters, I remember them almost losing to Taipei in the first round back in 2011 :D

But hey, they choked in the QFs vs Jordan sooo... :D but still, getting the #1 seed is an absolute necessity. I do think Bahrain has a shot in beating Kazakhstan for that spot since they've improved tremendously and they now have a naturalized player in CJ Giles.

Only haddadi came to really play and iran still beat korea easily. With china's disastrous performance against argentinian discards, i think we know which team gilas mus beat convincingly.

doesn't matter what you think. everybody already knows which team to beat. and its basically every team in the tournament.

Interesting development over at the Lebanon thread.

Well apparently we will not be present in the AC, since the FIBA gave us till tomorrow noon so that all the cases against the federation will be withdrawn or else they will ban the NT from participating in the next Asian Championship.

You should address this cruel reminder to gilas. It is the team that hasn't won any important fiba tournament, hasn't won against a top caliber nt, and pins its hopes on some kind of homecourt advantage to win.

Sad for that country.. Lebanon prepare for nothing. Anyways, they might invite iraq to the asian championships if not, invite the next waba team after iraq.

I wonder why NBA teams play themselves to death just to get homecourt advantage in the playoffs.

besides, thousands of screaming fans can and do intimidate referees. lets see, less fouls called on us and more on them? never mind the effect a booming triple or dunk or block, with thousands screaming BUTATA, BUTATA?

Lets put it this way.this new gilas team was assembled 2 months ago.they're going to join the asia cup.its obvious they havent won any fiba tourney right?

Also, who said gilas is pinning its hope on some kind of homecourt advantage to win?

I don't think that is the case. I think there is a certain air of confidence right now and the main reason is the team's composition. People are excited we actually have a balanced and versatile lineup right now--maybe the best squad ever formed in recent years.

I don't think said homecourt advantage would create much buzz if on the other side of the equation we have baracael manning the 4 and casio and barroca taking turns at the point.

The very same thing that happened to us in 2005. We have prepared hard for the 2005 FIBA-Asia Championship. We sent our nat'l. pool to various international tournaments & were in a very high hopes of figuring well in that tournament...

...only to be told by FIBA, "you're suspended and you can't play anymore".

Which was very frustrating & disappointing becoz all the efforts, sacrifices & money being invested by our nat'l. team & basketball stakeholders just went down the drain.

But it's still not final for Lebanon. They still have about 6 hours (ultimatum set by FIBA) to fix things.

I remember that as well. It s*cks.
