Barroca, pals make Tams top UAAP contender
Updated June 10, 2009 12:00 AM

MANILA, Philippines - Far Eastern U, boasting of players who had polished their skills with the Smart Gilas Pilipinas team, has been installed as the team to beat in the 72nd UAAP basketball season which fires off July 11 at the Araneta Coliseum.

Mark Barroca, JR Cawaling and Aldrech Ramos are now back in training with the Tams after taking part in the national developmental squad who competed and trained in China, Serbia, the US, Indonesia and Japan the last six months as part of its buildup for top-level tournaments and possibly a shot at a berth in the 2012 London Olympics.

FEU coach Glen Capacio said the troika has improved tremendously since joining the RP team, admitting this would further boost the Tamaraws’ bid when they open their UAAP campaign next month.

“Skills wise, they’ve improved a lot,” said Capacio, “But I think the most important thing is that their level of confidence is high now compared before,” he said.

Barroca, the co-skipper of Smart Gilas, has become a solid all around playmaker while Cawaling has sharpened his outside shooting and emerged as one of the best wing defenders of Smart Gilas. The 6-6 Ramos has extended his range to the three-point area while improving his defense.

Capacio hopes to draw the best from his starters as FEU slugs it out with the league giants, led by defending champion Ateneo and last year’s runner-up La Salle in what promises to be one of the fiercest title chases in years.

Lipa returns as UAAP commissioner
Updated June 11, 2009 12:00 AM

MANILA, Philippines – The University Athletic Association of the Philippines yesterday officially appointed Joe Lipa as its commissioner when its Season 72 unwraps on July 11 at the Araneta Coliseum.

Lipa formally assumed the position yesterday during the UAAP board meeting at the FEU campus in Morayta, Manila, replacing last year’s commissioner Chito Narvasa.

At the same time, Ricky Palou, Ateneo’s representative to the league board, said the UAAP will tap referees from the Philippine Basketball Association, Philippine Basketball League and BRASCO, a new referees group, for the coming season.

It will mark the first time that pro refs will officiate in the UAAP.

The recent appointment marked the return of Lipa as UAAP commissioner since assuming the job four seasons ago. He was also the commissioner of the NCAA last year. – Joey Villar

With Noundo, and the come back of the "Major 3", Barroca, Cawaling, and Ramos, watch out people. The Tamaraws just sharpened their horns, and it's crystal sharp. FEU is going to ram to it's way to the promised land...

I agree, I think the Tamaraws are the team to beat in the coming UAAP. I predict it will be FEU-ADMU for the championship. :D

for Ateneo to repeat, Rabeh must regain his composure which he exhibited last year. So far this year he seems to had gone back to his old ways of being hot headed and complains to much instead of concentrating on the game.

UAAP, NCAA inaugurals on despite A(H1N1)
Thursday, June 11, 2009 3:42:00 AM | 1 Comments

Despite the rising incidence of Influenza A(H1N1) in the metropolis, the National Collegiate Athletic Association and the University Athletic Association of the Philippines leagues will be held as scheduled.

NCAA chief Fr. Mat de Jesus, OSB, of San Beda and UAAP president Anton Montinola of Far Eastern U yesterday said their school league will open their season June 27 and July 11, respectively, at the Araneta Coliseum with the basketball competition despite reported A(H1N1) cases in some member schools.

"Yes, we're going ahead with everything, God willing," de Jesus said.

At the moment, classes in Ateneo and La Salle of the UAAP and St. Benilde of the NCAA have been suspended due to A(H1N1) cases reported in their campuses.

UAAP basketball tournament director Mark Molina said the opening game pitting Univ. of Santo Tomas against Adamson at 2 p.m. and last year's losing finalist La Salle against University of the East at 4 p.m. on July 11 will not be affected.

Univ. of the Phils. squares off with National U at 2 p.m. and defending champion Ateneo tests Far Eastern U's mettle at 4 p.m. in another pair of matches on July 12.

NCAA will have reigning three-peat titlist San Beda going up against Mapua at 2 p.m., Jose Rizal versus Letran at 4 p.m. and Perpetual Help against San Sebastian at 6 p.m. in its own opening day offering.

St. Benilde opens its bid against guest team Angeles University Foundation at 2 p.m. while Arellano U and Emilio Aguinaldo College, the two other guest squads, debut at 4 p.m. at The Arena in San Juan City on June 29.

"No changes as far as the NCAA schedule is concerned," said NCAA management committee chair Jose Mari Lacson of San Beda.

According to the Department of Health, 13 of the reported 57 A(H1N1) cases came from La Salle and one from nearby St. Benilde.

Classes at La Salle was suspended as early as last week while St. Benilde will resume classes on June 19, a week before the 85th NCAA season opening.

Ateneo, which announced Tuesday night it has three students tested positive for the virus, recently suspended its classes and will resume on June 22.

"So far none of our athletes have tested positive and they continue to train," said Bro. Bernie Oca, La Salle's representative to the league board.

Management Committee member Henry Atayde of St. Benilde said their participation in the NCAA will not be jeopardized by the A(H1N1) cases although the Blazers will not be joining the pre-season tournament lined up by ABS-CBN for UAAP and NCAA.

The said tournament organized by the two leagues' official television carrier will pit the best of the UAAP against the finest from the NCAA in what promises to be an interesting battle.

"We will not be joining the tournament of ABS-CBN in compliance with the directives of the Commission on Higher Education and the Department of Health," said Atayde.

La Salle and UST had already pulled out of the tournament. Joey Villar - The Philippine Star

guys there are reports that Mbe left Benilde and was spotted practicing with the NU Bulldogs.

Can anyone confirm this, this young import seems to be the most travelled player in recent years as he had practiced with so many college teams in the short span of time he is in Manila.

Would NU be Mbe's final stop or would his travel to find a Philippine "home" continue, what do you think. NCAA starts June 27 while UAAP starts July 11, there is still time for him for another move or two hehehe :D

Out of the UAAP and NCAA's 18 schools, how many have Mbe applied to?

I am beginning to pity the kid. I think he, and his agent have made a mess out of his budding college career. I think he keeps asking for too much, but is not living up to the price he is asking.

That, or this kid really has serious headcase problems. There was talk of him offering himself to ADMU at one time, but the ADMU alumni reportedly have none of it as he has a reputation for being a headcase.

He should just go back to Africa, or wherever it is he comes from. His example is far cry from fellow imports like Noonduo or Njei.

from what I know the discoverer and guardian of 17 year old 6'7 Mbe is U16 National Boys Team Head Coach Eric Altamirano. Mbe was originally intended for Coach E's Alma Mater, UP Fighting Maroons but he ended up enrolling and playing at the CCL for the EAC Generals last year but he was pirated by the UST Growling Tigers. The controversy and the displeasure with what UST is giving prompted Mbe to leave Espana. The STI Olympians opened their doors to Mbe where he practiced and studied for free for some time. But while with STI, he gone out to sell himself to DLSU Green Archers and ADMU Blue Eagles while joining some workouts with the SMART GILAS National Team. I am not sure about the San Sebastian Stags workout rumors. He soon left STI and was seen with the CSB Blazers but again he did not last long and is now seen in the practices of the NU Bulldogs. He was said to have also asked the UE Red Warriors if they'll have him before he was seen at NU.

Is this Mbe really good such that a bunch of schools are willing to gamble and pour resources on a character like him?

Say, how will he compare to a Sam Ekwe or a Rabah Al Husseini?

he's marketability is his height and age, here in the Philippines as we know it is not that common to find a 17 year old 6'7 player. But he is not a post-up kind of player as he is more at home in playing in the wings and shoot baskets from the outside. To give credit to the kid, he does have a nice shooting accuracy even if most of his shoots were from the outside.

based on what I seen in the summer league, both Ateneo and La Salle must regain their bearings fast if they want to stop the rise of FEU. Both the Archers and Eagles are not as well organized and cohesize as they were last year. While the Tamaraws are benefiting from a number of things, their 3 national players really improved a lot with their stint with SMART GILAS, the bulk of team gained a lot of confidence while playing for the Oracle/Harbour Centre team in the PBL and they are getting an extra lift with such gifted new recruits. The UE Red Warriors despite having a relatively new coach still has a very potent core of players that has been playing together for sometime already and they have a superstar guard which has been given more freedom to dominate the game, I do feel they are the dark horse for this season that has a legitimate chance of becoming the surprise Champion of the UAAP.

Am sorry but I do not think the sharpshooting National Player could carry the UST Growling Tigers. Even though the Adamson Falcons and UP Fighting Maroons have their share of magnificent recruits, I do feel they could pull some surprises but not go all the way upto the Final 4. The NU Bulldogs are in a rebuilding phase so don't expect much this year but watch out as I see a big progress after a year or two.

UAAP okays rules on tiebreak, instant replay

MANILA, Philippines – The University Athletic Association of the Philippines will apply new rules in resolving ties in Season 72, which unfolds on July 11 at the Araneta Coliseum.

League president Anton Montinola of host Far Eastern U yesterday told The STAR they are instituting changes in breaking ties by eliminating unnecessary matches that prolonged the event in past years.

“This year, we will be using common sense to break ties,” said Montinola a few days after he presided over a meeting that discussed the technical matters of the tournament.

“For example, this year if there’s a three-way tie for first to third places, the team with the highest quotient will end up No. 1 while the next two battle for No. 2 and the twice-to-beat edge.

“In the past, the practice was No. 2 plays No. 3 with the winner playing No. 1 for the top seed. That is senseless when you can break the ties faster,” he said.

The rest of the rules, like giving incentive to a school that could pull off a rare sweep, will remain as implemented last season.

This means the team that will score a sweep will gain a twice-to-beat advantage in the finals compared to two years ago when University of the East accomplished the feat but got ambushed by La Salle with a sweep in the best-of-three finals.

The league will also implement rules that give teams a chance to challenge a three-point conversion at any point of the game via instant replay and suspend the possession arrow rule in the last two minutes of the match.

Pro-grip, an adhesive used by players to enable to handle the ball better, is still prohibited while schools will still be limited to two foreign players each with one allowed to play at a time.

UAAP basketball tournament director Mark Molina said the opening day games pit Univ. of Santo Tomas against Adamson at 2 p.m. and last year’s losing finalist La Salle versus UE at 4 p.m. on July 11.

The next day, Univ. of the Phils. squares off with National U at 2 p.m. and defending champion Ateneo tackles a Mark Barroca-led FEU side at 4 p.m.

Commissioner Joe Lipa said the league will be tapping a combination of pro, semi-pro and amateur referees from the PBA, PBL and the BRAASCU. – Joey Villar

I'm about to expect a great season, withLipa around, this must be a better than that Narvasa. Well, by the way, off-topic, here's UAAP Season 72 logo for TV:

This reminds me of the earliest UAAP on ABS-CBN logos. Cheap.

FEU will be the champs this season... the cebu escapade of admu shows their weakness in outside shooting... only buenafe and reyes can score from the outside... nothing else... :)
