The Philippine National Football Teams (Azkals, etc.)

On the anniversary of the "Miracle of Hanoi" for the Philippines comes the "Miracle of Taipei" for Timor-Leste.

The fact that Phil Younghusband couldn't keep that from happening shows that his game is really going down now, perhaps it's fitting that he was there with the team. I'm still disgusted with Marlon Maro.

And now this Jefferson Cheng is making all kinds of stup@% excuses to try to justify his stup@%ity of leading the Azkals to its most embarrassing stint so far.

He should just admit na palpak at yang Coach niyang pipitsugin. Ang hirap e nagdadahilan pa, me "magtulungan pa tayo" bullsh@%. (Translation: He should just admit his failure and his incompetent Coach. The problem is he keeps making excuses including that "let's help each other bullsh@%".)

Football: Conflict Erupts After Azkals' Losses in Taiwan Tilt

ABS-CBN News

MANILA -- A leadership squabble has erupted following the Philippine Azkals’ sorry performance in the four-nation Chinese Taipei Football Association Invitational Tournament.

On Tuesday, the final day of the tournament, the shorthanded Azkals squad suffered a 1-0 defeat to lower ranked Timor Leste at Municipal Stadium in Taipei.

Ironically, the defeat took place on the anniversary of then so-called “Miracle of Hanoi” where the nationals were able to upset powerhouse Vietnam in the 2010 Suzuki Cup.

Dan Palami, the team manager credited for the rise of the Azkals and chairman of Philippine Football League club Global FC, aired his disappointment through Twitter.

The team, which also lost to host squad Chinese Taipei after a win against Laos, was composed of a few veterans, players from the U-22 Southeast Asian Games squad and university standouts.

Busy Year Ahead for PH Football

By: Cedelf P. Tupas - Reporter / @cedelfptINQ
Philippine Daily Inquirer / 05:05 AM December 18, 2017

BACOLOD CITY—Bracing for a busy year ahead, the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) has approved a P167 million budget for projects and programs for 2018, when the men and women’s national teams play in big international tournaments.

PFF president Mariano “Nonong” Araneta said that while the federation will continue receiving subsidy from the International Football Federation (Fifa), Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and Asean Football Federation (AFF), it would still need to raise about P32 million from other sources to meet the budgetary requirements.

The budget proposal was approved during the PFF Congress at L’Fisher Hotel here over the weekend.

The bulk of the budget, Araneta said, would go to the technical department, which covers grassroots and age-group teams, and the national teams.

Azkals Fall in FIFA World Rankings

By: Ray Charlie Diaz, December 22nd, 2017 10:00 PM

THE ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) released the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) world rankings last Thursday with a disappointing result for the Philippine Azkals, dropping to second from being top-ranked last month among Southeast Asian nations.

Vietnam is now in the 112th spot, rising 13 spots and surpassing the Azkals, who declined six spots to finish the year at the 124th place.

I don't know if you are also following women's football but after the Azkals' roller coaster run in the 2018 WC Qualifiers, the Philippine Malditas will play in the 2018 AFC Women's Asian Cup in Jordan this April for a chance to make it to the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup in France.

https://sports.abs-cbn.com/football...2018-ahead-malditas-excited-shock-world-35275

Eight teams will vie for five spots in the World Cup, and they are divided into two groups of four teams each.

Group A consists of hosts Jordan, the Philippines, China, and Thailand; while Group B consists of two-time World Cup finalist Japan, Australia, South Korea, and Vietnam.

The top two teams in each group will qualify for the knockout rounds and the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup, while the third placers in each group will duke it out for the one final Asian slot in the World Cup.

This means we only need to avoid finishing last for us to get a chance to qualify for the Worlds, but if we make it to third place, we will probably have to face either Australia or South Korea for the right to represent Asia in the Worlds.

In that case, we only need to figure out how to beat Jordan and Thailand and we're good.

Azkals Battle Tajikistan

posted February 06, 2018 at 07:43 pm by Manila Standard Sports

THE Philippine Azkals will have another opportunity to make it to the tournament proper of the Asian Football Confederation Asian Cup.

That’s when they clash with Tajikistan in the last match of the qualifiers on March 27 at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium in Manila.

“This match will be a crucial match as it will decide the Philippine Men’s National Team’s chances of qualifying for the AFC Asian Cup,” said Philippine Football Federation president Mariano “Nonong” Araneta.

The Panaad Park and Football Stadium in Bacolod City were earlier nominated to host the final Group F home match.

But, it was called off due to difficulties in securing fully equipped training venues.

The Philippines took the first match of the Asian Cup Qualifiers in Manila with a 4-1 win against Nepal.

Filipino Shoots for English Premier League Stardom

Cardiff City and Philippine national team goalkeeper Neil Etheridge – born in the UK to a Filipina mother – has the game's most lucrative league in his sights

By JOHN DUERDEN FEBRUARY 18, 2018 12:50 PM (UTC+8)

Neil Etheridge is having quite a season in the English Football League Championship, the soccer-mad country’s second-tier competition.

And if the 28-year-old Cardiff City goalkeeper belonged to any Southeast Asian nation other than the Philippines, his every move would be closely watched and debated “back home.”

Manila rocks to a different sporting beat than Bangkok, Jakarta, Hanoi or Phnom Penh, however. In the Philippines, the three ‘B’s – billiards, boxing and basketball – hold sway. And yet for all that, it may well soon become the first Association of Southeast Asian (Asean) nation to have a player in the English Premier League, the world’s most popular domestic football tournament.

“The Philippines is not an out-and-out football country like Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia or Indonesia,” Etheridge tells Asia Times. ”That is just the culture: football is just not a big sport at the moment.”

He references the 2016 AFF Suzuki Cup, the region’s biennial international competition. For the first time, the Philippines was a co-host – but attendance, which barely reached 2,000, was as poor as the home team’s performances.

“The national team need to be improved in terms of promotion. Getting to the Premier League may help with that but this is uncharted territory,” Etheridge said.

Although Thailand sent three players to Manchester City in 2007 – when the club was owned by former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra – none of the trio came close to making a competitive appearance for the club.

Etheridge, born in London to an English father and Filipina mother, is different. Signed by the then Premier League team Fulham in 2008, the shot-stopper struggled to break into the first team and bounced around lower league sides on loan.

After being released by Charlton Athletic in 2015, he was without a club for a few months before being snapped up by Walsall. Then, after impressing for the English Midlands team, the call came last summer from the Welsh capital: Cardiff City were looking for cover for the injured Lee Camp.

(The top teams in Wales have long been allowed to play in the English leagues because there is no wholly professional league in Wales itself.)

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines) — The Philippine Football Federation (PFF) announced they will host a friendly match between the Azkals and the Fiji Men's National Team on March 22 at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.

The match against Fiji will serve as the Philippine's tune-up game before their 2019 AFC Asian Cup qualifying match against Tajikistan on March 27.

The Philippines only needs to secure a draw against the Tajiks to qualify for the Asian Cup in the UAE.

I don't think Schrock should return, he is good, but he is not THAT good or as critical to the team like Manny Ott or Javier Patino.

Remember that he did make it to the team for awhile up until the last Suzuki Cup, but as we have seen then, his impact on the team wasn't as great as the team failed to make it beyond the group stages.

Add in to the fact that his ego is a lot bigger than his impact to the team ... then, no need for him to be there if Coach Dooley doesn't think he should be there ...

Will Schrock Return to Azkals? Coach Dooley says Selection will be What's Best for Team

Published February 26, 2018 9:06pm
By RYAN FENIX

The Philippines will face Tajikistan on March 27 in the last match of the 2019 AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers, in what arguably will be one of the most important matches in Philippine football history.

At stake is a slot in the 2019 AFC Asian Cup, where the Philippines could meet the heavyweights of Asian football: Japan, Australia, and South Korea among others. With the rise of Philippine football in recent times, one cannot deny the fact that the Azkals should be playing in the tournament and competing against the very best in the region.

Azkals’ coach Thomas Dooley has his work cut out for him, and it is imperative that he select his best possible squad from among the available and in-form players.

And when you talk about in-form players, one name immediately comes to mind.

Ceres Negros’ midfielder Stephan Schrock has been in fine form for his club, inspiring the Bacolod-based club to wins in the AFC Champions League preliminary rounds and certainly making a case for his selection to the national team after a period of absence.

Thomas Dooley has remained firm in his stance of not selecting the former 2.Bundesliga star.

The two Germans have had an on-again, off-again love-hate relationship to say the least. There have been numerous highs and very notable lows. In August 2014, Schrock memorably declared “It’s not true that I don’t wanna play for the Philippines anymore... (but) as long as Coach Dooley will lead the team I won’t wear the jersey of Azkals again.”

The two mended fences on June 2015 which paved the way for Schrocky’s return to the team.

But things seemed to have taken a turn for the worse after a disastrous 2016 Suzuki Cup, with Schrock once again on the outside looking in.

Against Tajikistan, a motivated and inspired Schrock may just be what the Azkals need, but Dooley has seemingly made up his mind, despite loud clamors from fans and pundits.

“Is Stephan a good player? Yes, he is, everybody knows that. But I am deciding not about the fame, the age, the color, the size or with political reasons. It is always and will always be what is best for the TEAM. To build a good strong and function TEAM”, Dooley tells GMA News Online.

The livestream of the Azkals vs. Fiji match at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum

The score seemed close, but that was because Dooley experimented a lot and sent in a lot of players, using up all of his six Substitutes to give everyone a chance to play as much as possible.

Overall I think this was a very good tune, many players got to play, and the players get to play with each other in an actual game before the more difficult game against Tajikistan next week.

FT: Azkals 2, Tajikistan 1

What a game this turned out to be. First was Kevin Ingreso, who turned from Heel to Hero in the game. Ingreso tripped a Tajik player in the Penalty Box allowing Tajikistan to score off a Penalty Shot.

But then later, Ingreso scored off a header from a Cross by Iain Ramsay, leveling the score.

And to put icing the Cake, a Handball was committed by a Tajik in the Penalty Box, which Phil Younghusband scored for the final score.

As if that was not enough, IT WAS ALSO PYH'S 50TH CAREER GOAL FOR THE AZKALS!!!

Congratulations to the team, off to the AFC Cup!!!

Football: Kevin Ingreso Struggles for Words in Unbelievable Turnaround for Azkals

MANILA, Philippines—Kevin Ingreso could not find the words to properly express his feelings after a roller-coaster of a performance for the Philippine Azkals in their AFC Asian Cup qualifier against Tajikistan on Tuesday at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.

In a span of 10 minutes, the 25-year-old midfielder went from goat to hero in what turned out to be a 2-1 triumph for the Philippine men's national football team — a victory that sent the Filipinos to the 2019 AFC Asian Cup.

It was Ingreso who committed the hard foul on Tajikistan's Davronov Nuriddin inside the box, giving the visitors a penalty that Nazarov Akhtam coolly converted in the 64th minute.

Just 10 minutes later, however, Ingreso made up for his blunder by heading in a cross from Iain Ramsay to equalize, sending the crowd at the Rizal Memorial into pandemonium.

"I actually couldn't believe it," said Ingreso, who was named man of the match. "It's not often I score a goal with my head."

"I was crying. The tears came out," he acknowledged.

Ingreso was understandably hard on himself after committing the error that caused the Philippines to trail 1-0, but his teammates were there to boost his spirits.

Football: Asian Cup, not 50th goal, is What Matters Most to Phil Younghusband

Camille B. Naredo, ABS-CBN News
Posted at Mar 27 2018 11:47 PM | Updated as of Mar 28 2018 02:46 AM

MANILA, Philippines—It was only fitting that in the biggest match in Philippine football history, the country's greatest goal-scorer would put his stamp on the game.

Phil Younghusband entered Tuesday's match against Tajikistan having scored 49 international goals for the Philippine Azkals. He was already the leading goal-scorer in the history of the Philippines, but another one would put him in rarefied air among footballers.

But the veteran striker was insistent that he was more concerned about getting a favorable team result, rather than scoring his 50th goal. The Azkals needed just a draw against Tajikistan in order to advance to the 2019 AFC Asian Cup.

"The 50th goal can wait for another time," Younghusband said on Monday.

As it turned out, Younghusband got them both – a historic 50th goal and a massive victory that sent the Azkals to the Asian Cup for the first time ever.

The match was already tied at 1-1 in the 90th minute, courtesy of Kevin Ingreso's header in the 74th that served as an equalizer. That result would have been enough, but the Azkals got a chance to put the cherry on the sundae when Tajikistan got called for a handball inside the box.

There was no doubt that it would be Younghusband who would take the penalty. And as he had done so many times before, the Azkals captain coolly, confidently converted from the spot, giving the Azkals a 2-1 lead and all but securing the victory.

It was an emotional moment for the team and the more than 4,600 fans that packed the grandstand at Rizal Memorial Football Stadium. Afterward, Ingreso said of the team captain: "He knows what he's doing. I was sure when he scored that we're going to the Asian Cup."

Palami Looking to Add More Talent to Azkals Roster

By: Randolph B. Leongson - Reporter / @RLeongsonINQ
INQUIRER.net / 01:06 PM April 03, 2018

Philippine Azkals aren’t resting on their laurels as they brace for bigger wars ahead.

Team manager Dan Palami shared that this early, the management is already scouring the nation and the globe for prospects who could don the national team colors beginning the 2018 AFF Suzuki Cup in November.

“We’re already talking to some prospects,” the amiable executive said Tuesday in the weekly PSA Forum at Tapa King in Cubao. “We’ve actually talked to the moms of the players who are playing in higher competitions.”

Palami said there are three Fil-foreign booters who are in the process of joining the Azkals for the next window of competitions.

Raphael Obermair is a 21-year-old midfielder currently playing for FC Bayern Munich II in the fourth-tier Regionalliga Bayern.

“Sometimes he has been in the line-up of the first team in some of their games. Even though he didn’t play, he’s on the bench and it’s a testament to the quality that he has.”

(Article intentionally cut, to read more go to: http://sports.inquirer.net/291389/dan-palami-looking-to-add-more-talent-to-azkals-roster)

That means he is really quite good. I hope he still ends up with the Azkals, though.

However, I feel the biggest catch would be Holtmann, he scored a goal in the Bundesliga a couple of months ago. After Wolf and Schrock, I think he is the only other player with Bundesliga experience among the Azkals past and present.

More than two weeks since the Philippine Men’s National Football Team’s qualified for the 2019 AFC Asian Cup for the first time in history, the country has experienced its highest jump yet in the FIFA World Rankings.

The Azkals jumped nine places from 122 to 113 in the rankings with 288.53 points. Kenya is ranked 113th in the world but leapfrogs the Philippines with 289.08 points.

What this means is that the Philippines will be in Pot 4 of the group stage draw alongside Bahrain, Jordan, Thailand, Yemen and Turkmenistan that shall be held on May 4, 2018 in Dubai.
