The Junmar Fajardo Thread

Junemar showed why he is one of the best PH bigs in history. If you watched JF’s games as closely as I did you will know JF always works on his game and tries to improve. Early in their AFC streak he would practice 1 one 1 with guards to practice his dribbling. He had a stepback move that he rarely got to use because he was always played in the paint. I remember he had a step back game winner against Thoss.

Despite being slow and heavy he liked doing Euro steps on the secondary break. He also developed his one hander, the weapon he used pre-injury even against Australia.

But you know with his heavy weight and heavy playing time he developed a hairline fracture in his leg. To probably lessen the weight in his leg he stopped doing euro steps. But he still did one handers IRC. Until in practice, on a fast break with nobody guarding him his leg broke as he was going for a layup.

So you see, after healing the leg, jumps on one leg would not be on JFs repertoire anymore. This was bad because his one handers were usually on one leg. Aside from losing some mobility, he suddenly lost his go to move in international games.

This is what’s amazing that happened in the Euro tuneups. He always had a jumper but he didnt use much. Im not sure how, but he developed a fadeaway move. At the age of 33, after winning 6 MVPs, after breaking a leg. Just to have a weapon against international bigs, JF developed a fade away.

Despite the limitations because of his injury JF found a way. He always does what is asked of him. The way he slimmed down for the OQT team. Junemar would always be a what if internationally. If he was allowed to maintain a lighter weight. If his minutes were not so outrageous.

He seems to be in a better condition now than pre-injury. But just imagine if he could do his one leg moves and he was faster and could jump higher as he did in his rookie year. I have no doubt he would have been a better defensive player with a more dynamic offensive repertoire if he was allowed to have the weight and lesser PT and international competition to do it.

Pre-injury he was good offensively but was horrendous defensively. Tab had the right idea of minimizing his weight to maximize his defense. He wouldve been decent in PNRs and with his offense be a net positive with or without Blatche. That didnt happen. He was allowed to maintain a heavy weight and be a liability on D. This meant he only played a few minutes and that he rarely played without Blatche in higher comp.

We will never know how the best fittest version of Junemar couldve done internationally. But so far this WC post-injury is the best consolation for a big fan like me. To develop a move to be effective internationally is just like Junemar.

Junemar showed his physical strength is world-level. He's an old-school center who will have a strength advantage against most new-school bigs. The key for him is to hold his own on PNR's, Liz kind of exploited that in the first half.

He's playing like a true captain and doing a great job.

He's more effective now, since he's surrounded with other capable bigs, not just Japeth,he seems to move more energeticaly and really pushing back against opposite bigs.

He's the PBA GOAT indeed - Guardian of Antiquated Tactics lol

Seriously, JF is an absolute force. I'm really looking forward to seeing him perform exceptionally well tonight.

Since you remember these things well we're probably on the same age bracket hahahaha
Let's go way back say Centennial Team 1999-2005

Centennial Team: I always knew that we're not as strong as to what the PBA claimed us to be. But nothing could prepare me for the drubbing we got from SK esp Seo Jang-Hoon.
What if: Asi and Menk were already in the PBL at that time, I wish we had the vision to consider these guys

2002 RP Team: Obviously the biggest what if was the injury of Danny Seigle. That aside, that Team could've had Chris Clay & Jeff Flowers (Immigration issues), Davonn Harp (Rape case) on the Team. Plus the Happee and Selecta Team had tons of options. So a final lineup of say Aquino,Pennissi,Asi,Flowers,Menk, D.Seigle,Clay, Duremedes, Cariaso,Castillo would've been nice. Plus W.Miller (MBA), Caguioa & John Arigo of Alaska could've joined as well.

2003-2005 - FIBA Suspension
2007-2009 - Pre-Gilas
You're right, Asi looked old during this time he was around 36 i think. Japeth was just raw at 22. Maybe we could've just let him play the SF for us and paired with Asi & Slaughter who just started w/ UV. JF was only 6'7-6'8 then IIRC.
Those middle east/west asia teams were big (&slow). Would've been the perfect time to start fieldng a Naturalized Center and not wait for the Gilas 1.
My pick for a naturalized would've been Jamal
Sampson. I know he did not take us seriously but
humor me, a lineup of Sampson,Slaughter, Asi,Walkvist (another 6'10 stretch big ahead of his time),Penissi & Japeth would've been nice to
throw at Lebanon,Iran,Jordan,Korea,China even Syria who all had really big teams.
Then we have established guards in Miller,Caguioa, Hontiveros and should've forced Dillinger and Norwood to handle the PG duties since Caguioa and Co. were really undersized SGs.

Sir, here’s my own personal hindsight as a young lad back then.

Asi-Alvarado-Menk-Hatfield-Harp-Siegle for that 2002 AG as my take. Whatever issues surrounded on Sonny Alvarado at that time I didn’t know the whole story about that Fil-Sham issues but eventually he was allowed to re-enter the country and gotten his DOJ clearance to giveway for his planned stint at the national team but it doesn’t pan out maybe because issues on Fil-Sham is very touchy at that time. Issues also surrounded on Asi’s legitimacy was also in questioned until now but we’ve seen the commitment, dedication and the desire of the big guy to play for the national team just to prove his allegiance. In fact upon receiving his 2002 MVP trophy in front of sportswriters and politicians including the Big J who is very much critical on that issues at that time blurted his final speech,”PINOY AKO” just to prove his true intention. Now as for Davonn it was eventually confirmed his legitimacy in 2009(?) 7 years after that heartache in 2002 AG. Can’t blame the dude for not redeeming himself, that rape issue is very touchy really. The moral of the story is this if ever there’s a hot girl in her figure huggin' wardrobe presenting herself as a media practitioner and asking for a strict one on one interview inside your intimate place therefore we have to be critically minded because there’s a lot of Captain Hooks nowadays in all shapes and sizes.

As for Chris Clay the last thing I’ve heard while playing for the Sta. Lucia team at that time is that he is just a few months away in getting his DOJ Certification but unfortunately it didn’t pan out due to some inconsistencies(?) on his submitted documents or maybe some corrupt(?) DOJ emps wants to milk something on the poor dude(just my own personal observation).

As for Jeffrey Flowers I doubt his Filipino lineage but got married to a statuesque courtside reporter at that time and in fact one of his Filipino son are already into college basketball.

Good thing about Chris Clay, Asi Taulava and Jeff Flowers even though their Filipino lineage is a big question mark but because they’ve already immersed to the Filipino culture by marrying their respected Filipina wives and established their own families here.

Just imagine if only our basketball stakeholders during that time had a vision to make a difference on Philippine basketball to maximize whatever provisions on FIBA’s eligibility rule and regulations plus the financial clout of both SMB and MVP for our Senior teams working harmoniously to build a solid foundation on Philippine basketball with Asi-Alvarado-Menk-Hatfield-Harp-Siegle-Clay-Flowers-Ildefonso-Hontiveros-Parker-Adducul-Reavis-Racela-Alapag-Cariaso-Cortez-Aquino-Espino-Calaguio-Ritualo-Camaso-Castillo-Jackson-Pennisi-Pena among others with coach Ron Jacobs and coach Jong forming the core of our Senior team of that decade.

Oh well those are the days of my much younger days when 2 of my favorite band of all time Eraserheads and Oasis started to fall apart little by little that eventually leads to the total disbandment of the Heads in 2003 and the Gallegher bros. last straw of their many well documented physical/violent confrontation that leads to the total disbandment in 2009.

Now fast forward a little bit.
With the Sy clan of the SM empire pitching something on our youth team via it’s NBTC and Chooks involvement in the 3x3 plus SBP are offering some legworks to assist some prospects to facilitate their respective documents maybe we could entice the likes Scuba Holt, QMB, DJ Fenner, Remy Martin, Ron Harper Jr. to be part of the youth team at that time. With Ben Mbala’s desire to acquire a Philippine passport at that time maybe he is now exempted nowadays alongside AK34.

Good read, its like taking the whole Scoreboard/Sports Life magazines into one big summary. For sure I'll be reading this again
Can you imagine Asi,Flowers,Alvarado,Seigle,Menk,Mitchells,Clay,Parker,Segova all playing PH Team? pero the public wouldnt like this for obvious reasons, but we could've been Qatar before Qatar :D

Sir, I think that provision on FIBA's guidebook that stated that player(s) with dual nationalities must be involved in a domestic league for a specific number of years, it's just that the latest revision was more concrete and specific compared during that time..I stand to be corrected on this.

That would have been a great core for the Nteam, too bad that the PBA's concern was only the Asian games, only after that Paranaque Jets disaster when Danding committed his wards for FIBA tourneys (which eventually led to a suspension)

I hope he gets to the Asian Games team, let's see how he fares with his much improved game.

Yes Sir, whatever issues happened during that time about Filam/Filsham brouhaha and that 2002 Asian Games it will always be part of my bucket list as far as a basketball fan and I want to include the PBA 99 Season as one of my favorite PBA moments of all time as well…Indeed how time flies.

That SMB vs. Alaska game will always be one of my memorable games to me...Terquin Tuva Mott vs. Devin Davies will always be competitive and that SMB vs. Sta. Lucia game with Rob Parker and Kwan Johnson at that old Makati Coliseum with mayabang in person Vince St. Price blurting that "Parker to Kwan Johnson alleeey-ooop..slam!! and vice-versa that's nostalgic to me. lastly, the 3rd Conference games of SMB vs. Tanduay; SMB vs. Tanduay games of the 2000 All-Filipino that's a dandy for me.
