maybe but ateneo played against a newly formed team...

I think Ateneo had also just returned from specialized training in the US. Maybe the alumni scratch their head and wonder if it was money well spent.

After failing to get Aguilar, SBP eyeing Cebu behemoth

JAPETH AGUILARSamahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) executive director Noli Eala on Sunday lamented the decision of amateur standout Japeth Aguilar to turn professional instead of serving the country as member of the Smart-Gilas national team.

“Nanghihinayang kami sa SBP, because he’s got lots of potentials to serve the national team,” Eala said in a telephone interview.

“Masakit man, but we’re ok. We’ve always maintained na kami sa SBP, wala kami pinipilit. If Japeth decides to turn pro, wala kaming magagawa. Because service to the country is not pilitan. We feel that it’s a duty of every Filipino,” Eala added.

The six-foot-10 Aguilar, son of ex-pro Peter Aguilar, applied for the PBA Rookie Draft, that will be held Sunday at the Market! Market! Place in Taguig City.

Aguilar looms as the top overall pick that belongs to Burger King under mentor Joseller “Yeng” Guiao, who also handles Aguilar with the Powerade-Team Pilipinas.

Smart-Gilas, under Serbian coach Rajko Toroman, has offered a three-year deal to Aguilar, who, if he had agreed, would have a similar contract to a PBA rookie. He played several games with Gilas in the US few months back.

However, Aguilar, 22, who played one season for Ateneo in 2005 before he transferred to Western Kentucky University, a Division 1 school in the United States NCAA where he starred for three seasons, decided to make the jump to the PBA Eala said that they will look for other prospects.

One of them is University of Cebu’s Junmar Fajardo, who, according to Eala, plays similar to Aguilar. The 6-10 Cebuano is currently training with basketball legend Ramon Fernandez.

“We still need a little height. We’re very high on him (Fajardo) in terms of skills. We’re still continuing talks with him. We’ll also continue to develop Greg Slaughter, as well as other big men like UAAP MVP Rabeh Al-Hussaini (of Ateneo),” Eala said.

Eala also mentioned that American CJ Giles, the one-time LA Lakers, is expected to sign a one-year deal, with the possibility of extending the contract depending on whether or not he’ll get naturalized, which is currently in the process.

Meantime, Chris Lotz, 6-foot-4 wingman from Marshall University whom Eala described as a pure shooter and a strong player, will be arriving August 1, to join fellow Fil-Am Shawn Anthony, a product of McGill University.

Lotz and Anthony, who stands 6-foot-4 and plays the 2-3 positions, were discovered by the SBP when it conducted a tryout in Las Vegas.

SBP, Atty. :p

If we get a couple of 6'7-6'8 players who could play small forward that would be very nice.Of course acquiring the likes of CJ Giles,Junmar Fajardo and Rabeh Al-Husseini would be great news.I'm still counting on the PBA to provide some players for the team but of course we can always rely on Barrocca and the rest of the gang to step up.

based on the report in NBN sports UC is now willing to let junmar play as long as it was for the country. maybe they are still afraid that he will be pirated by the manila teams. They are now ironing thing maybe putting some security clause for the rights of UC on JUnmar.

They don't want him ending up in the hands of any UAAP school. :D

You've seen how popular Japeth has become playing for the NT. If Junmar does the same, expect his popularity to rise to stardom, if he really as good as he is hyped up to be.

Wherever Junmar's popularity goes, expect him to drag up UC's name with him also.

It's still technically possible for MVP's Talk N Text to negotiate with the team having the first draft pick to acquire Aguilar. Having CJ Giles naturalized or another taller naturalized player with Fajardo, Al-Hussaini, Lotz, Anthony and hopefully a much improved Slaughter will be an awesome combination.

With the right offer, they can't refuse, it can be done.......:D;) Even YG can't do anything if management says so just like what happened to his former team.......;)

Nicely said, naiiyak na nga ako

Yes it is unfortunate that Mr Aguilar chose the PBA but it is his decision to make. It is unfortunate for the Phils to just be relying on him to save basketball. I think the SBP has alot more good players that can compete in international play. There is even an article about the SBP asking congress to fast track Giles naturalization. It looks like if we dont get Giles soon, baka mawala pa siya(as I have mentioned before). Fajardo is a good player that has alot of potential, even more than Japeth and he will get better with the Smart gilas team. This will be the experiment. Japeth in the PBA and Fajardo in smart gilas. In 2 years let us see who is a better all around player and who will be more accomplished. This will just prove what is the better way to go PBA or SBP. And as mentioned the salary of the SBP is like PBA rookies' salary and you have a chance to go to euroleague, asian leagues or NBA with the SBP contract, hence more lucrative. Getting more exposure now will be a big help for his future.
I salute all the SBP players for giving their time for their countyr. I am excited to see how good Lutz his, he has good mechanics with his shots and he does shoot it well

NGEK! .... i do not deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as MVP and Sir Noli. Am just like you, just a mere fan who loves philippine basketball with passion. I only help the SBP in anyway that is needed to be done.

I have a suggestion so that the schools lending their players will be more enthusiastic about lending players. why not allow a small logo of the player's school to be stitched to their Gilas uniform as a sort of advertising. i think this is reasonable. For example, Rabeh's uniform will have a small Ateneo logo maybe on the left or right side of his shirt or something.

do you guys think that we should let this Fiba Asian Champs go and let's concentrate on the Asian games instead? how many Asian qualifiers do they need for the Olympics anyways?
