Dear God, I hadn't heard of that....That's astonishing. Amazingly low-class. Unbelievable....

low-class? Come on. Firsteball you have to investigate a little. This is a CHINESSE adversting. Spain is wearing China company Li-Ning`s T-Shirt. For example Berni Rodríguez speak in chinesse in this adversting. Do`n't belive all you read in newspaper. The Guardiand should have more responsability.

You talking now about British newspaper....crap as deep as the bone! Basically with this small article are declaring all Spanish nation racists. Throw a photo (can be any reason behind it or as you said pure advertising), throw a couple of incidents from the past...and there you are the result is unmistakable with photographing evidence. They didn't say of course that Henry may have call the Spanish "bastards" first! They did all the same to the Greeks just before the 2004 OG. Dirty, lying filth, supported of course by photo evidence as always.

I also fail to see what so wrong about it, it's the same if the games were being held in Stockholm and they were wearing helmets with horns.
Additionally achinet's explaination clarifies the issue.

Yes I know that. We have racist people here (like in all places) but the majority of us aren't racist. We have a big problem about inmigration here, and that no causes any problem, only humanitarian help.
I know that is a newspaper bussines, but many people believe what they writes.

g.g. - i share your utter disdain for the British media, although The Guardian is slightly better than most other papers IMO. Btw, the fact that Henry called the Spanish bastards or whatever else does not excuse the use of racist language against him...by the coach of the NT no less. Second, the fact that the Spanish jerseys have a Chinese sponsor does not explain the gestures of the players in the photograph. I think it behooves us to further investigate this to ascertain what happened. But I agree with you that the article implies, as most British reports tend to, that the problem (of racism, in this case) lies elsewhere, and never in Britain. Perhaps we can agree that the problem is widespread throughout Europe and this advertisement does not seem to be helpful in this regard.

I will explain it again. It was an adversting MADE BY CHINESSE COMPANY, not by Spanish company. This gestures are part of the CHINESSE merchandaising.

Although I hate all the political correctivness, I don't think that's the same with what the spaniards did. The last few years this move/gesture is considered as derogatory against certain asian people, especialy in the USA, where the PC is running high (along with certain expressions).

There is a difference between helmets with horns and slit eyes. One is a cultural marker and the other a racial marker. Historically, the slit eye gesture has been used derogatorily as a mark of racial mockery. While it seems that this was not how it was being used in the advertisement, one can imagine it not being very well received in China and elsewhere.

Not only the greeks. Didn't you see BBC reports from Beijing before the start of the Olympics? I just want to see how they're going to report about their own Olympics in 2012.

I missed it. Exactly how did the Guardian declare "all Spanish nation racists."

Also, if Henry called the Spanish team "bastards" does that really excuse the racial remark made? Unless call the Spanish bastards is racist now...

Agreed, but if it was a Chinese company that told them...

And is it just me or has the Guardian changed their initial article in the last few minutes to take out the part about the Courier company. Indeed, if it was a Chinese company that ordered this pose, it changes things...

OK, put some blond wigs and there you go.
Things have to be understood within their context. While I concur that gesture might be derogatory (although personally I didn't have that notion), it might be done in a friendly manner, which is clearly the case with the ad, also because a Chinese company is behind it.

this is a stupid discussion. Yes here we have racism like in other places, but in Spain we have a left govern who is plannig to give vote to all forainers, that is racism??. whe have a big inmigration here (mainly here in Canary Islands) and is no one problem with racism. We have one of the biggest Romaní (gitanos) poblation and they are part of our culture (do you know what it is happening in Italia) so, don't speak about spanish racism please.

Wow, I'm sorry this is basketball discussion, I were a little bit angry.
