SMART GILAS North American Tour

just got back from the game. smart gilas lost 111-107. at one point the were down by i think 20. thanks to chris tiu's 3 pointers and tough defense by the team. they got close. towards the end of the game it was 107 all with 13 secs left. after LA slam converted a lay-up making it 109-107, mark barocca called for a timeout. the smart-gilas team were given a technical since they didnt have any timeouts left. LA Slam converted two freethrows 111-107, with 7 secs left. they were able to throw 2 3pt attempts, and then ababou was blocked with his last attempt. it was a nice game. although it was kinda hard to watch when they were 20pts down.

Marcio Lassiter didnt play, and so did sison and guevarra. Casio wasnt in attendance and still no signs of Lutz.

How was Greg? Japeth? I know Rabeh wasn't a factor but how did he fare against foreign opposition?

They played NBA rules I think..
 
I got a feeling that these ABA teams are showtime teams. At this point in time, a well-organized, euro-trained team should be able to brush these showtime teams aside.

A team of Hip Hop artists just beat a well-prepared and experienced national team. WTF!

But they probably used NBA rules! Nice.

atleast they are playing against players who are above 6'5...a PBA team with a 6'6 center would be easily beaten by this showtime teams trans: Lhuiller nga na walang import natambakan pa yung ibang PBA team e :D

In my opinion, Greg did well, he knows how to use his length on offense. But he is still very raw. he plays more of like a gasol type of player who usually just reaches for the ball and stretches to score.(i did not say he is as good as gasol). Japeth i believe still lacks the post up skill, and plays more like a small forward. Rabeh didnt play that much to make a good impression. scored only two points & didnt do well with rebounds.

all our big men didnt do well boxing out the other team for rebounds. not sure what the count was, but i'm sure we were out rebounded.

Gilas were good at forcing turnovers & anticipating passes. but perimeter shooting is something they had a problem guarding (or i think LA slam's players are just very good shooters..)

One comment i heard a lot during the game was.. "ampapayat ng players ng gilas!!"
 
I wonder why these hardcore PBA fans brag so much about?..the current PBA stars like Kelly Williams and Gabe Norwood came from the RP team din naman before joining the PBA...I wonder why they hate the RP team so much. mga papansin masyado

This LA team has a 7-foot volleyball player as their center, right?

Nice to hear a comment from someone who actually watched the game.

But I beg to disagree. Like Gasol, Slaughter is now a dominant force.
 
tough loss. this only means that we're not yet in the level of asia's top 3 teams. to be beaten by a watered down american team after all the training and exposure tells a lot about the composition of our current pool. we are really weak at certain positions. if it's any consolation, smart gilas is not playing with its full roster as the likes of casio and lassiter did not suit up.And we still have the luxury of hoping that the firepower that a naturalized import, lutz, stanhardinger and williams will bring will drastically alter our offensive and defensive capabilities. but still, our current national team pool should be dominating ABA teams by now if we are to be considered formidable in Asian standards.

after two games, three nt players showed they deserve a slot in Asiad, Tiu, Baracael and Slaughter. Keep up the good work, guys. As for the rest, now is the time to impress Coach Toroman if you really want to make it to the final 12. Go Pilipinas! :cool:

As if for the past 2 years the others were not doing their best and working their asses off to impress and please their coach. That's kinda unfair, mr. bats. :-D

Smart Gilas is so inconsistent that I've been jumping in and off the bandwagon. It's not easy, you know. ;-)

this is kinda true, but a lot of them are serious players too. Like Tony Farmer who i don't know, but they say is a former NBA player. he is 6'10. their point guard is a street baller and an And1 legend. their 7 footers are white guys who probably played in college.

also they are the SOCAL division champions and ranked 6th in the ABA, which I think has more or less 25 teams from all over the US.
