VANCOUVER -- The Philippine national basketball team is scheduled to visit Vancouver next month to play against two of Canada’s caliber teams. The national team also known as “RP Smart Gilas” -- will be playing a series of games against the Canada West All Stars and Canada’s number one-ranked collegiate team, the UBC Thun*derbirds.
RP Smart Gilas aims to gain more experience in high-level competition in order to qualify for the 2012 London Olympics. The RP cagers will play Canada West and University of British Columbia on May 4 and 5, respectively, at UBC’s War Memorial Gym . Both games will start at 7 pm. RP Smart Gilas is led by this year’s top pick in the Philippine Basketball Association draft, 6-foot-11 Japeth Aguilar of the University of Western Kentucky.
The team will be bannered by team captain Chris Tiu, who led Ateneo Blue Eagles to the UAAP Championship last October, and Fil-Am Chris Lutz who plays for Marshall University.
The team will be coming from a grueling series against Australia’s NBL and Serbian First Division teams. The highlight of the team’s success was beating Asia’s best teams in the recent Dubai Invitational and trouncing Team Pilipinas, consisting of former national players, 98-69.
After Vancouver, RP Smart Gilas will have a stint in the Asian Club Championships in Doha, Qatar. The Vancouver trip is being hosted and organized by Jay Razon, president and founder of the Multicultural Sports Development Society (MSDS), along with Mike Calingo, Jampy Flores and Tom Firme.
