Smart Gilas cagers to test mettle of 2 local teams
Thursday, 01 April 2010 17:13

VANCOUVER -- The Philippine national basketball team is scheduled to visit Vancouver next month to play against two of Canada’s caliber teams. The national team also known as “RP Smart Gilas” -- will be playing a series of games against the Canada West All Stars and Canada’s number one-ranked collegiate team, the UBC Thun*derbirds.

RP Smart Gilas aims to gain more experience in high-level competition in order to qualify for the 2012 London Olympics. The RP cagers will play Canada West and University of British Columbia on May 4 and 5, respectively, at UBC’s War Memorial Gym . Both games will start at 7 pm. RP Smart Gilas is led by this year’s top pick in the Philippine Basketball Association draft, 6-foot-11 Japeth Aguilar of the University of Western Kentucky.

The team will be bannered by team captain Chris Tiu, who led Ateneo Blue Eagles to the UAAP Championship last October, and Fil-Am Chris Lutz who plays for Marshall University.

The team will be coming from a grueling series against Australia’s NBL and Serbian First Division teams. The highlight of the team’s success was beating Asia’s best teams in the recent Dubai Invitational and trouncing Team Pilipinas, consisting of former national players, 98-69.

After Vancouver, RP Smart Gilas will have a stint in the Asian Club Championships in Doha, Qatar. The Vancouver trip is being hosted and organized by Jay Razon, president and founder of the Multicultural Sports Development Society (MSDS), along with Mike Calingo, Jampy Flores and Tom Firme.

Media Sponsor for the Team Pilipinas Canada Series is Philippine Asian News Today headed by Rey Fortaleza. Tickets is being sold at Manila Express Outlets at 10 dollars while $15 at the door on game day.

after the long wait, lutz will finally don the gilas colors... hope SBP and lutz come to terms coz gilas badly needs a 3 pointer.

if we take lutz out of the equation, who is the best/most accurate three point shooter of gilas? casio? marcio? baracael? ramos? cawaling? or tiu?

hopefully, lutz is the better that any of them in 3pt shooting... because (i hate to say this) that is the only reason why gilas is bringing him into a team already loaded with guards.

Anyone would dare to criticize or cite negative effects of the serbian tour? Remember we won only one game against 5, even though losses against some quality opponents no one can say if they improve from last time

About this tour MVP must been given a bargain sale by the ones handling the Abunassar camp. Bout the canadian trip no comment at least gilas went to
canada:D

i really thought they'll be meeting famutimi and the rest of national team of Canada..haiiyss..

the team that they'll be meeting is just as good as the Ateneo team last year..
:o
anyway..still experience points to be gained..its needed to level up..

against small teams like taiwan and japan, i think tiu, baracael and co. (not atoy but company) can shoot the lights out from anywhere beyond the arc. it's the games against tall teams we should be worried about. hopefully lutz has better court vision to make those needed 3 pointers against taller teams like china and iran since he's played taller teams all his young basketball career.

it's quite obvious that our outside scorers are having difficulty scoring off tall and agile defenders at this point.. if it's any comfort to us our guards arent one dimensional shooters and i am sure they'll be able to devise a way to score from afar against taller teams when the real war begins

so they're gonna participate in an ABA friendship tournament...

i think this is gonna be like the global hoops summit which an RP team participated in 2005...

ABA 2010 Friendship Games Announced
April 8, 2010 - American Basketball Association (ABA)

Manila, Philippines. The American Basketball Association (ABA) now ranked as the largest professional sports league in the US in terms of teams, launched its global joint-venture in Las Vegas last December and plans for its first two ABA venues in Tampa, Florida and Las Vegas in February. It has positioned itself as #2 to the NBA, but now, its niche where teams from all over the world will see action vs. top ABA teams in a World Basketball Cup in 2011 has triggered a frenzy in the world basketball community.

The $200 million dollar global expansion announced by ABA Global is kicking off with the second international team to enter the domain of the US professional league via an initial FRIENDSHIP GAME series starting April 25th in San Diego, California. After the successful entry of the Beijing Aoshen Olympians from China into the ABA, the Philippines is fielding their bet to the Olympics in 2012 - the Smart-Gilas National team to the ABA.

"The entry of the Philippines to the ABA is a tremendous follow-through after the Chinese team for ABA Global," said Joe Newman, ABA CEO. "The Philippines has basketball as the #1 sport and it is a dream of filipino cagers, same as others from around the world, to play pro basketball in the US. You will now have ABA jerseys with international stars together with our red, white and blue balls - now called FLAG balls."

"The entry of the Philippine team is not only historic for the country; it is also historic for the USA, as there is a very close link between the two countries," said Paul Monocza, ABA Global Vice-Chairman. "The Philippine team will test their speed with its entry into the ABA in the US."

The 2010 FRIENDSHIP GAMES will be a five-game series in Southern California. The Smart-Gilas Philippine Nationals will be led by their captain, Chris Tiu, the US trained 6'10" forward Japeth Aguilar and 7 foot center Greg Slaughter. The ABA teams will include the Los Angeles SLAM, which boasts stars like "The Game," former NBA Cleveland Cavalier Tony Farmer, And1 star Larry Williams and 7 foot center Josh Stanhiser of the University of Hawaii.

The San Diego SURF team is led by scoring champions John Clark, a 6'5" Pacific Coast Conference player and ABA All-Star together with Terry Menefee, an NCAA standout; 6'8" Bryan Freshwater also joins them from the German pro league and All-American Anthony Bruner. The Philippines will also play the Riverside Rainmakers and the Clayton Showtime from Northern California as part of the series.

thanks to sinoball for the link

the games against canadian teams and ABA is not recommended as they dont give good competition other than a feel-good victories for gilas. i guess gilas can use them as workouts . the canadian trip in my opinion is more of a public relations tour...i would have preferred that gilas play against NCAA Division 1 teams

Maybe they can use those games to work on their one-on-one defense especially for our backcourt.

We need the ABA trip because we need exposure they are not very good teams but they want us so they can sell many tickets

Off topic:

Does interbasket allowed pretenders here? Like SMART MVP who posts and claims he's none other than Manny V. Pangilinan himself..
