Slovenian NT

Last edited:
when did Slovenia got promision from our federation to naturalize Bubnic?. He is Croat from Croatia and alredy playd for our NT selections? WTF?
I know he has our citizenship as well, as it helped him in our league i assume, but honestly have no idea about why NT is calling him.
You can have him though, for the sake of good neighbour relations and stuff :D

Kastrati and Morina are both Kosovar and naturalised. I don't remember exactly what someone once told me but one of the two supposedly actualy wasn't even registered in Kosovo even as a youth player or somthing like that and there is a possibility that he wouldn't even be counted as naturalised player.

Lmao at Zdovc and Daneu JRS :)
Smodiš already said he is honered to be included in the wider list but he finished his story with NT, calling in Sani was probably a sort of apology for the flamewar between Sani & Memi Bečirović and Maljković last summer, while Brezec also claims to finish his NT career, while honestly if any of Vidmar/Begič or even Slokar/Lorbek gets injured we'd be desperate for a center like him, no matter his defense.

Erazem Lorbek is out due to knees surgery. This was kind of obvious for the whole season long as he was far from his old self. We could use that Erazem from previous championships, while Erazem we saw in the last stages of ACB wasn't even remotely near and this way we've lost nothing but a big name, experience and rotation.
Slokar didn't have the best season in Gran Canaria, Balažič is a bit late boomer and never played in NT, Zupan lacks stability in his performances.

Coming to think about foul prone Begić and imagining Vidmar at free throws, this sure will be an interesting eurobasket :)

Being used to all those PF's in the past, Slokar, Balažič, Zupan aren't all that up to our ussual level, but within a well thought system they can do their job nevertheless.

Most of all I am not really sure what can we expect from Maljković, as G. Dragić already complained (well, he went publicly with it, so basicaly that's a complaint even if it wasn't neccesarily meant this way) that in the last eurobasket they were playing way to controled, slow paced, should push the ball more and that Maljković didn't really succesfully apply his philosophy to the team. We'll see if anything will change in his head.

We don't have as many briliant scorers as we used to, but the transition to the new generation kind of surprised me as it has gone low profile, but nevertheless pretty well.
I personaly got high hopes for a lineup Begič/Murič/Z.Dragič/Blažič/G.Dragič as it should be one of the best defensive lineups at the championship.

Either by pressuring the transition, lanes or Begič's lenght deflecting shots, these guys should be phenomenal on open court together when given a chance, generating fast breaks even when it seems unlikely at first hand. Assuring defensive rebound and letting them "off the chain" in front of home fans could be deadly. However, un-confident first pass, def fouls in transition would slow it down, definately resulting in a zone and than, as neither of Murič, G. Dragič or Blažič (and definately not Z. Dragič) is some phenomenal shooter, it's basicaly the matter of that 1,2 shots falling in or not. I believe our result will depend a lot on that lineup able to prevent defenders from closing into zone or effectively breaking it.

The second quite nice lineup is the vet/scoring mix. Lakovič/Udrih/Nachbar/Slokar +either of the both C's, this lineup shouldn't occur a lot, but when it would that's just whole lot of experience and firepower.
Most of the time (including starting lineups) we'll see combinations within both of those lineups, with such a variety of all that different players, should be an interesting thing to observe.

I believe the team should be playing agressive, fast first pass, defensively annoying basketball, with the succes in a large part depending on Maljković's perception of that and his ability to mold this team. Even if name wise the roster doesn't seem particulary strong, some of those "small names" are quite usefull players.

I am not actualy Maljković's loudest critic, I wish him all the best and would be extremely happy if he'd get a good result in 2013, but he isn't really my type of a coach and would feel way more comfortable if someone like Zdovc was in his position.

In first preparation game Slovenia beat Ukraine 74-46
Preparation game as any, nevertheless Ukrainian backcourt was uncompetitive, all the way from guarding penetrations to chasing over set screens. Slovenian backcourt did it's job, it was nice to see Blažič, Z. Dragič and Murič performing as I hoped to, as they'll imho be the key between NT being average and having a chance for something more.
Lakovič, Begić and Nachbar haven't played.
Next preparation game sunday vs. Macedonia

Just like 2 years ago Maljković obviously bets on lots of games in preparation period (12 overall in 47 days of preparations this time). Some argue players will get fed up with basketball this way, but as a hosting team I sincerely doubt that can happen. We'll see.

Slovenia always looked like a little bit sleepy team with 3-4 NBA players to me. Maybe homecourt really can help here. On other hand, the pressure might call for another collapse. I still remember these mistakes of Jasikevičius and Songaila against Mecadonia...

In other sports home court traditionaly prooved to be a huge plus that provided some quite extraordinary wins for our NT's either in football, handball or hockey so basicaly fans are quite spoiled when home venue is in question and are demanding a medal eventhough realisticaly it's probably the first time in the decade we don't really have the tools for it on paper. A lot of our game will depend on young and relatively unexperienced players, that could either cost us a lot or proove to be that vital boost. It's still the best ones we have, the days of talent superiority, have ended for us. Progres that both Dragič's, Blažič, Murič have made during the last two years might actualy make this team better in terms of quality than it was in 2011, but that's all arguable and something that has to be prooven on court.

Playing a total underdog, relaxed and completely focused is a psychological nightmare for any team, I remember those last minutes of the game you are mentioning. And I do believe some teams have a legit chance for upseting at this eurobasket as well.

Thanks mate

First friendly for any Eurobasket team, if I'm not mistaken. Way too early to judge through stats, still interesting though

Actually, you are mistaken - Montenegro defeated Hungary 76-72 and Belgium defeated Netherlands 61-53 before Slovenia beat Ukraine.

Slokar is so out of shape right now - he played the most minutes, yet scored practically nothing. There's plenty of time to get in shape, though.

Slovenia - Macedonia 63-54 stats here
Macedonia led for the most of the game, but lost the last quarter 16-1 (!?) as it was pretty visible they really could use some fresh players and short rotation showed it weaknesses. McKalebovski and Antić that weren't playing in this game would be worth gold from that perspective.
Slovenia played more under the rim nevermind Begić and Slokar seem slightly out of shape and rotated a lot less than in the first game, i like the fact Maljković is promoting backcourt press as most believe he should. Otherwise contiditons in the arena were... hot and the game at lower level due to it, although the game itself didn't seem all that bad considering the point of the cycle our NT is in.

Macedonia missed McCaleb and Antić, Slo missed Nachbar, Lakovič and G. Dragič.

i dont trust maljkovic. guy lives in the past, this season when he was in zagreb he only talked about jugoplastika, kukoč rađa... stories we heard milion times before... and he cant except critics, big ego who thinks cause of his great results in past everything he does must be good.

I'm not a particular fan of his either and talk about the good old days on all levels from U14 to seniors is in my opinion one of those mentality issues contributing to basketball stagnation, at least in Slovenia.
But Maljković is the coach we've got right now and now we don't have any other options apart from giving him another chance, from the scratch. Surely he screwed up big time in Lithuania imho, but hopefully he won't do it again and would potentialy surprise. If I would base my view on our NT and my expectations solely on 2011 episode, that would lead to depression, so I'm willing to take it once again from an optimistic perspective, as there is no other healthy option left :)

Also in the past we've had loads of options of how our NT could play, with immense offensive talent. Right now it doesn't take a nuclear scientist to figure out our biggest (if not only) chance is agressive defense from Dragič bros, Murič, Blažič, good defensive rebounding and a fast first pass (we've never excelled at btw.) as those guys are devastating in open court. Maljković got that judging from what he was saying. It's a good start... or at least, could be worse :)
