it's a sad fact..that after 10 years, Taulava is still considered "dominant" in the PBA..wala tayo pamalit, and it seems like if Taulava won't retire from NT duties, we'll be needing him 'til he's 40+ yrs old.

thats why developing greg, junmar, holstein and van opstal is critical..

Just a response to these post

dude you really nid to read.
fajardo is already at his final year in college
while holstein nid at least 1-2 years

as for opstal
since uaap allows a player to play at least 5 years in college
he will only be free from la salle by the year

read read read :D:D:D:D

No need for any argument here.

But Surely, they (those you mentioned) won't be part of the Gilas Roster or any of our National Team.

I don't have any prophetic vision --- i'm very certain of this

Just a simple stitching of facts :

Opstal and Holstein's Availability will be at the Latter part if not the end of Gilas program. And Jumar Fajardo is already at SMC's stable.

So knowing these facts, do you think they can be a part of the Gilas ?

Wanted For Future National Team:

= A couple of young talented bigmen with physique to battle the brutes of our asian neighbors

= perimeter gunners who know how to create shots despite being guarded by taller and bigger opponents. Not the usual spot-up shooters.

= strong slashers who can shoot from the outside is a bonus :p

= smart pointguards who are good executioner of plays..can penetrate and shoot 3s

* above all they should play good defense too ;)

Okay let's simply your points

= A couple of young talented bigmen with physique to battle the brutes of our asian neighbors ( a young carbon copy of 7'0 Paras or Patrimonio can do )

= perimeter gunners who know how to create shots despite being guarded by taller and bigger opponents. Not the usual spot-up shooters. ( an Allan Caidic or Chip England in a mold )

= strong slashers who can shoot from the outside is a bonus :p ( a young Samboy Lim can finish the job )

= smart pointguards who are good executioner of plays..can penetrate and shoot 3s ( a young tall Hector Calma or Jimmy Alapag will AWE the crowd )

* above all they should play good defense too ( molded young motley crue gang of Jaworski )

now, now how I wish HISTORY REPEATS ITSELF

MVP is MVP

Until one of his sponsored athlete wins a gold medal in the Olympics, bringing over NBA superstars Kobe Bryant and Derrick Rose for an Ultimate All-Star Weekend will have to serve as icing on the cake for telecoms tycoon Manny V. Pangilinan in his far-reaching involvement in Philippine sports.

A corporate cannon in the business world, Pangilinan, chairman of PLDT and Smart and president of Meralco, among other companies, has given his blessings and lent his name to nearly a dozen athletic disciplines to become, literally and figuratively, Philippine sports’ MVP – Most Valuable Patron.

He is the president of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP), and his Smart Gilas team, which competes in the William Jones Cup in Taipei this week, will be leaving for the FIBA-Asia Men’s Championship in Wuhan, China in September to shoot for a dream slot to the London Olympic Games next year.

Next stop for the national team is the 2013 FIBA Asia Championship, the qualifying tournament for the 2014 FIBA World.

Under SBP, national teams for the Southeast Asian Games – men and women – as well as for the FIBA-Asia Under-16 men and women tournaments, have been formed and are currently undergoing training, gaining momentum following the successful staging of the 22nd FIBA Asia Champions Cup at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig.

A couple of weeks ago at the PLDT office in Makati, Pangilinan, as chairman of the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines, presented a 15-year-old boxer from Zamboanga named Eumir Felix Marcial with a check worth P300,000 for winning a gold medal in the AIBA World Junior Boxing Championship in Astona, Kazakhstan, the highest achievement so far in the event by a Filipino.

Ricky Vargas, ABAP president, paid tribute to Marcial who beat a taller boxer from Turkey in the final match, hailed his parents for supporting the passion of their youngest child, and extolled ABAP’s talent search program.

“Eumir is the product of the combination of events put together by Mr. Pangilinan,” said Vargas, also CEO and president of Maynilad Water Services Inc.

As hefty as the amount was for the young teenager, it was merely a continuation of MVP’s willingness to reward excellent performance for flag and country as indicated by the whopping P3 million windfall that landed on the lap of veteran national boxer Rey Saludar, a gold medal winner in the Guanzhou Asian Games last year, the P1 million won by silver medalist Annie Albania, and the P500,00 Victorio Saludar, Rey’s younger brother, took home for saving the bronze.

And the list goes on, with MVP extending a hand and opening his checkbook to cycling, tennis, running, taekwondo, badminton, and even the now wildly-popular Philippine Azkals, among others.

Under the aegis of the MVP Sports Foundation Inc., launched early this year with top Meralco executive Al Panlilio as president, a group of companies chaired by Pangilinan has made it a mission to assist all the way the grassroots development and elite programs of eight national sports associations under the mantle of the Philippine Olympic Committee.

It was through the MVPSFI that Bryant, Rose, Kevin Durant, Chris Paul and several other NBA stars descended into the Smart-Araneta Coliseum three weeks ago to showcase their magic upon tens of thousands of mesmerized fans who packed the Big Dome like never before since the Crispa-Toyota and Robert Jaworski era.

Already the owner of two PBA ballclubs –the Grand Slam-seeking Talk ‘N Text Tropang Texters and the Meralco Bolts – and chief benefactor of college basketball’s top collegiate teams – the four-peat seeking Ateneo Blue Eagles in the UAAP and the San Beda Red Lions in the NCAA – Pangilinan appears set for an even bigger role: possibly to stand as co-godfather to the Philippine delegation competing in the 2011 Southeast Asian Games in Indonesia, a compelling commitment which the country’s sports officials will be looking forward to.

“Ang Philippine Sports Commission ay nagpapasalamat kay Mr. Pangilinan sa suportang binibigay niya sa sports, especially in these times na medyo gipit tayo sa funding,” said PSC chairman Richie Garcia. “With his help, I think we’re not far into getting our first gold in the Olympics.”

Joey Romasanta, the POC spokesman, shares the view.

“MVP through the years has been quietly but actively supporting Philippine sports,” Romasanta said. “As a no-nonsense businessman, he also brings to sports his professional expertise. And being results-oriented, we can expect his involvement to provide a much-needed boost in our quest for our first Olympic gold.”

Renowned businessman-entrepreneur Cecilio Pedro, Lamoiyan Corporation CEO and president and an ally of Pangilinan in Philippine sports involvement, especially in boxing, has jumped aboard the MVP bandwagon.

“I believe Filipinos are world-class and we should come together, follow MVP’s lead and help in whatever way we can so that we can hopefully one day win a gold medal in the Olympics,” said the man behind Hapee Toothpaste.

i dont think we need a total revamp on gilas right now... in order for them to be competitive for the next 2 years they just need to retain casio, lassiter, douthit and japeth... or maybe tiu... then add 5 pba players and 5 college players... greg, ramos, parks, keiffer and others... hehe... or they just need to get pringle, banchero and christian S.

Smart Gilas CORE:
Douthit
Aguilar
Lassiter
Tiu
Casio

5 PBA players:

College Players:
Slaughter
Ramos
Ray Parks
keiffer

International:
Banchero or Pringle
Christian S.

who are banchero, pringle and christian S? have you seen them play? again, like fajardo, i'm a skeptic until i see them play. also among the college players it is only ramos and greg who has a realistic shot at joining or re-joining the gilas program..kiefer and ray are only in their first uaap playing years.

the sad news I heard is that even though the GILAS Project would be extended, it would not have the full support of MVP. He is said to be displeased with the so many criticisms the team is getting despite it elevated back International Respectability to Philippine Basketball. He could not understand despite all the effort and sacrifice by the GILAS Players, they could not get the same public support which the AZKALS are getting. Even the Dragon Boat team which was not supported nor recognized by the POC and PSC are getting a lot of fans rallying to their cause. It is said that it pains him that he spent quite a big chunk of his wealth already for basketball that a number of people would rather view his teams as villains rather than heroes. Filipino Fans are just hard to please, when PBA-formed team after PBA-formed team has failed to be successful internationally, he copied a different approach that was a success in the past, but still people are not contented ..... a number were voicing that there is still a need for PBA players .... now he brought in reinforcements but still people are not happy and more arguments the team are being raised. Damn if you do .... Damn if you dont .... even if experts like the opposing Team Coaches or the International Sports Media are saying that the Philippines is now a different team and had improved greatly, its saddening that the people you are supposed to be representing are not supporting you the way they should.

So now MVP would rather just stay in the background whatever happens to SMART GILAS in Wuhan. He'll still give his share of support like Douthit's salary but he'll not invest that much to basketball and rather spread his financial support to other sports where success is more achievable and public support is given more freely. According to sources he is not inclined to continue as SBP President and rather let others try their thing.

= strong slashers who can shoot from the outside is a bonus :p Kiefer, R. Pascual, Castro

= smart pointguards who are good executioner of plays..can penetrate and shoot 3s Fortuna, Tenorio, Alapag

my takes in red..

I think Gilas might get the younger guys as holdovers for the national team while Lutz and Lassiter is uncertain because of their application for the coming draft.I can see these guys playing for Gilas.

Slaughter 7''- after his Ateneo stint.
Douthit 6'11-might be old but still the banger of the team.
Aguilar 6'9-might opt to stay for the NT.
Ramos 6'6 - in his last year for FEU.
Ababou 6'4- veteran big guard for Gilas
Tiu 5'9- the loyal( I could be wrong though) captain
Casio 5'9- hope he'll stay for another 2 years.

I think this will be the core of Gilas come 2014.I hope to get these guys for as reinforcements.

Banchero 6'-might be another Casio.
B.Rossser 6'7- can easily fill the small forwards spot
Y.Taha 6'8-has a lot to learn..but we don't have much versatile big guys here.
Abueva 6'4-the toughest amateur player out there.
Holt 6'4-this guy can play both guard positions.

i have only respect for our small yet resilient guards like casio, alapag and tiu. but i think we have seen enough of this small ball basketball. gilas should be the last nt to utilize undersized guards.

btw, casio is the best small pg the philippines has seen in years.

If he had better defense (at that size) i'm tempted to say he's better than Johnny Abbarientos because of his three point shooting (which the Flying A never had)

i don't think he is better than both tenorio and alapag...how many years are you referencing? coz i'm pretty sure olsen and johnny a have a lot to say to that...and mr racela has only been retired for a couple conferences.

Well true. Casio has to prove he can do this consistently in the next 5 years to be at par with the likes of Tenorio and Alapag (and Olsen too). What i meant is his potential rank if he does have a long and effective career.

about five years since the entry of tenorio in the pba. i never said he is the best of them all.;)

Casio has grits, guts and most of all he plays all out. As to whether he is better than Barroca, the answer is yes. Is Casio better than Alapag and Tenorio? I don't know but one thing is for sure he can match up well man to man against these guys.

If we cannot get taller players .... should we dismantle the program? Is it time to say basketball is not for us. And is it time to stop dreaming of Philippine International Basketball Glory? What do you think? Is basketball only about the height?

Should Filipinos just Quit the game of Basketball? Are we just wasting our time?

Being the Underdogs .... being a people lacking the height and resources. Should we just retreat and accept that we are nothing. Or should we fight on no matter what.

well casio is the best pg pilipinas NT has ever had. johnny A maybe has been a good pg in the PBA,but casio is the best PG the NT has ever had. jimmy played very good internationally but didnt play the same level casio is playing right now.

athleticsm is not that very important internationally as a PG as long as you can dribble, pass and the most important is shoot well.
