Give me Gabe, Give me Jared..they are still young players

Yeah the combo 2-3 spots seem talent shallow despite the coming Visayan boys. Were just gonna end up with eight 6'6 and above players who've played the 4 or 5 spot most of their basketball lives. an unecessary surplus considering that you can only field two at a time or risk slowing your team down. Well, I hope the poster who said that Toroman's system allows them to re-learn playing positions is correct. Maybe for the 1-2 spots its feasible, but I seriously doubt you can train naturally slow, lumbering 6'6 guys to slash or pop-up ala Barocca or Bahrami. Unless its in their genes of course. As can be observed whether PBA, NBA or FIBA, nothing throws a defense off better and create opportunities than a player who can effectively slash or pop coming off a screen or after delivering a pick. Whether defense is zone or man to man, these type of players always draw or distract at least two defenders.

Bro, add Kelly Williams while youre at it, he's good for a number of years. But ideally, I hope SG finds this kind of a gem of a player outside the PBA. And one Caidic type to boot.

give me Gabe,Jared and Kelly...Gabe can be a combo guard Jared and Kelly can play off guard and small forward...then Chris Lutz can alternate for Jared in the 2 spot

good if we can have an SF and SG who jumps like williams or plays like dillinger but its not really a necessity. an upgrade would be a welcome development but the way i look at it, lutz will be enough. what gilas need is for giles to play and for japeth, rabeh, greg, and junmar to improve and reach prime form by 2011. if that happens, shooting, slashing, and running will come easier. i feel that its our guards that should lead us in offense but they need the big men to control the game through their defense and rebounding.

Lutz can certainly help us in the outside shooting department. Jared and Gabe can be of good help IF they'll train with this team together. But Toroman wouldn't bother if it's the "hugot" system that will be applied here.

Still I am confident that Toroman knows what he is doing. As Nardy have already mentioned he isn't the matchup type of coach. He picks players who can fulfill a particular role.

Is 2 years enough for this team to peak?? we'll see..But I would love to see them play together beyond 2012..

Good:
1. Andy Barroca is regaining the swagger he had before the UAAP controversy.
2. Rabeh is getting into the system.
3. Casio is consistent.

Bad:
1. Ababou is still struggling. Not the same Ababou from the Champions Cup and UAAP.
2. Cawaling is the tallest wing player we have (correct me if Im wrong) and has the potential to be good. He should step up.

the "hugot" would not really work and it would further disrupt team chemistry. Just like now in GILAS, almost everybody is having a hard time re-learning the Toroman system as a number of them played different roles at their college teams. That's why I fully agree with Sir Noli's decision that the players would concentrate at GILAS and would no longer be allowed to play at the PBL. If the PBA would not completely excuse the players from their mother teams then it could probably harm than good as how can you teach them in a short period of time the new skills to be learned by the present Gilas players in a year's training abroad.

I do agree that the Gilas Team has no outstanding swingmen while its 4th spot is overcrowded. what's the point of having 6 C/PFs when we can only use two at a time? for me, the ideal number would be 4 C/Pfs, backed up by a trio of tall and efficient swingmen. with japeth and giles as sure favorites of toroman, that only leaves two vacant spots for the P/CF position.i want a fully-developed slaughter and rabeh to grab those slots.

I prefer 5 big men, junmar, greg, japeth, giles and ballesteros. para sigurado if ever may mainjure. i don't like rabeh, sa ngayon.
Ramos is a SF for me.

he will probably slide to sf once slaughter (and fajardo) joins the team

For me the number of the player now is fine.. i dont mind if the NT is overloaded and any position anyway we are in the process of developing and selection... what important is the NT should develop the chemistry needed and improve their game as they continue their training.. Rabeh is a good addition to the team and abbabou should regain its confidence...

Agree to that... Just like what I said before, Smart Gilas is a National Training Pool... a training pool can have 20-30 players in it... Toroman can pick 12 out of the 20 or 30 players in the pool in each tournament they play.. there is no definite final line-up... we can have 12 players selected in the Asian Games and only half of those players that competed in Asiad selected for the Asian Champs a year after... or a whole different 12 players... its up to the coach... we can have 5 to 6 centers in the pool it doesn't matter... yes, we need slashers and Jordan wannabes but it doesn't mean we have to push away potential players in the other positions...

as early as now, my prediction for the final 12 (fiba asia 2011):

C giles/slaughter
PF aguilar/fajardo/rabeh
SF lutz/baracael/ramos
SG tiu/ababou
PG barroca/casio

i think at SF toroman will play small. i dont know if they can get another 6'4 and above at SF. ray parks is the best we could get, but i don't think it will happen.

too early to tell but nice list. if cawaling improves his range, there's a chance he could snatch the spot of ababou or ramos or baracael for the 2010 asian games.

Now that SF spot does pose problems. Its not the three tall and efficient swingmen like one of the posters suggested but anyway its the best weve got. Maybe Lutz will surprise us.

By the way, is Junmar really measured at 6'9?

we're still searching for that nikah bahrami or el khatib-type of player at SF. ofcourse, there is kelly williams/norwood/dillinger in the pba but im 90% sure they won't be released to play for gilas.

a SF should be the most complete and all-around player for the team. baracael can shoot, slash, and defend but too small to guard the big SFs of other teams. ramos is just a tall shooter. i'm hoping lutz will be a better version of tony dela cruz

he is at least 6'9 without shoes:

Dont Forget guys that Cj GIles 6'11 is not playing.. he is our main man right now.. the leader of the team.. everybody is playng well if they know that they have a Cj Giles that dominate inside, block shots and catch alley-00ps that give energy to the team.. they are always out rebounded by more physical PBA players.. Japeth alone can't control the boards.. Ballesteros, Ramos, are getting push around.. shooters dont have the confidence on their shot since they know that Cj is not around to get the offensive rebound.. remember that we dont have any Fil-Americans on the team right now.. TNT, Ginebra are full of Fil-foreigners.. give gilas some time.. that is the key.. Cj is the Barometer of Gilas success as of now... we are missing 3 bigs right now.. Greg 6'11, Giles 6'11, and Junmar 6'9(if ever).. 3 point specialist Lutz 6'3 and since we didnt got paul lee.. Pringles 6'1 will be a key addition.. Gabe & Jared is a long shot.. if ever the PBA allows to lend players i would love to see Jared Dilinger 6'5 only to be added on the team.. he is more familiar with coach T and to his system and he is more funamentally sound player than Gabe..

i think tony's a bit taller

but lutz is a lot more agile and athletic

Since there's no question that Japeth and the other bigs need to improve big time, maybe MVP can agressively bid for this guy's services and lend him to gilas....

Lister scouting for PBA team
By Joaquin Henson (The Philippine Star) Updated October 25, 2009 12:00 AM

MANILA, Philippines - NBA veteran Alton Lister, who was in Siot Tanquingcen’s coaching staff when San Miguel Beer won the Fiesta Conference title last season, is back in town looking to work for another PBA team.

Lister, 51, said the other day he could be close to signing a deal but declined to disclose the team likely to contract his services. The scuttlebutt is Alaska, Talk ‘N’ Text and Coca-Cola are interested in the 16-year NBA pro as a skills coach.

“I came back a week ago to sit down face-to-face with the guys whom I might be working with,” said Lister. “I appreciate the opportunity of being able to explain what I can bring to the table. Right now, I’m in the interview process. I love the Philippines and the way Filipinos love basketball. It’s basketball that has brought me back - and the challenge of winning another championship in the PBA.”

Lister was an Atlanta Hawks assistant coach in 2007-08 and took the San Miguel job on Paul Howard’s invitation last conference. Howard was Lister’s coach at Arizona State and has close ties with San Miguel being Ron Jacobs’ best friend.

“I helped out coach Siot as an assistant in game planning, strategizing in game situations and coaching at practice,” he said. “Aside from the Xs and Os, I worked with the guards and bigs, trying to develop their skills. I also brought in the import (Gabe Freeman) and was involved in the decision to try out another import (Chris Williams) before the start of the playoffs. It was a special feeling when San Miguel won the title in Game 7.”

Lister said his experience with San Miguel was unforgettable but now, it’s time to move forward.

“San Miguel is a class organization from top to bottom,” he said. “They gave me the opportunity to work in the PBA. This season, they’ve made some cutbacks and that’s understandable. I would’ve loved to stay with San Miguel but under the circumstances, I’m moving on and looking for opportunities. I want to continue being involved in basketball because that’s my life.”

Lister said he can do for any PBA team what he did for San Miguel.

“I’d like to think my contribution to San Miguel was the extra push I gave to get it over the hump,” he noted. “A team might be on the verge of a championship but it needs that extra push to get the job done. That’s where I come in. I’ve had a lot of experience at a high level in basketball and that’s always a plus. I can bring in a quality import and work him. I can work with guards and bigs as a skills coach. I can assist the head coach in game planning, at practice and whatever else.”

Lister said his stay in Manila is indefinite.

“My stay is open-ended,” he said. “I’m hoping to cut a deal soon. I’m excited to get back to work in the PBA.”

Lister admitted during the offseason, he was in the US interviewing for jobs in the NBA. He applied to join the coaching staffs of the Minnesota Timberwolves and Portland Trail Blazers.

“With the NBA, you never know what’s going to happen,” he said. “It was difficult to just hang around, waiting for a call. Nothing was firm. So when I found out some PBA teams were interested, I decided to come back to Manila and explore opportunities.”

Lister said looking for a job is a priority because he has to earn a living for his four children who are all in school - J. Ross, 20, Alton Jr., 13, Alexa, 12 and Amari, 3. His oldest son is 6-5 and playing for a junior college in Florida. Alton Jr. is now 6-2, wears a size 15 shoe, has long limbs and could shoot up to 7-feet like his father. He’s in Grade 7. His daughter is six-feet tall and plays volleyball while his youngest son has started to play basketball.

Lister played for five NBA teams in 16 seasons. He left Arizona State a year short of finishing his business management studies to turn pro in 1981. But Lister persevered to earn his degree in franchising 13 years later.

“Once you leave school and start earning, it’s difficult to go back,” said Lister. “But I made a promise to my mom who’s now 81. I told her I would take care of my degree
. I never went back to campus, though. I finished the requirements through internet correspondence. It’s something I’m proud of and I want to leave it as a lesson to my kids.”

Throughout his NBA career, Lister said he made it a point to learn as much as he could from his coaches - Don Nelson at Milwaukee and Golden State, Bernie Bickerstaff at Seattle, M. L. Carr at Boston and Mike Dunleavy at Milwaukee and Portland. Lister played during the era of Michael Jordan, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson and Larry Bird.
