sorry I Have not been at the SBP office lately and Sir Noli is still in India, I'll see if I can drop by at the GILAS practice at ULTRA.

The only lead I have is on a picture in the net of a Matt Schettig but I think he is not the one. :)

Two Filipino-Aussies to beef up Gilas

Two Filipino-Aussies to beef up Gilas

THE Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) added two Filipino-Australians to its developmental pool as it continues to work on its goal to form the strongest team possible for the 2011 International Basketball Federation (Fiba)-Asia tournament.

SBP executive director Noli Eala said on Thursday Sep Salinas and Matt Scheptig will arrive on Sunday to try out for the Smart Gilas Pilipinas national team.

“This is SBP’s continuing effort to form the most competitive team for future international tournaments,” Eala said in a statement.

Salinas and Shceptig will join Japeth Aguilar and American CJ Giles and the country’s top amateur standouts in an exhibition game against the Singapore Slingers on September 23 in Singapore. There were no other details that were immediately made available, except that they are based in Melbourne.

Aguilar had his first practice with Smart Gilas on Thursday at the PhilSports Arena, almost 20 days since announcing his decision to play for the national team instead of honoring his commitment with Burger King, the team that drafted him No. 1 in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) in August.

In his Twitter account, Smart Gilas aspirant Chris Tiu said: “Had a fun and productive training session today with Smart Gilas team! So fun to have Japeth and CJ Giles together as your big men!”

Eala refused to comment on whether the 22-year-old Aguilar has finally decided to play for the Smart Gilas team and sign a contract with them.

But according to Burger King head coach Yeng Guiao, team manager Lito Alvarez just allowed Aguilar to do scrimmages with the SBP’s national team while they are still trying to find a solution to the issue.

Aguilar, who played for Guiao in the Fiba-Asia tournament in Tianjin, China, turned down Burger King’s three-year, P8.7-million offer.

The PBA is still discussing possible sanctions on Aguilar.

Disgruntled Barroca drops out of FEU team, says manager

Disgruntled Barroca drops out of FEU team, says manager

Far Eastern U will no longer have Andy Barroca for its Final Four campaign in UAAP Season 72.

According to Barroca’s manager, Ed Ponceja, the wily guard decided to drop out of the Tamaraws’ lineup, disgruntled over what he felt were baseless accusations of game-fixing thrown at him by team officials.

“Wala na, ayaw na niya maglaro kasi may lamat na yung samahan nila ni coach (Glen Capacio)," Ponceja said in a telephone interview.

“Syempre masama loob niya dahil napapagbintangan siya. So, para hindi na siya pagdudahan, he will no longer play na lang for FEU. He will just concentrate on his studies and his other team, Smart Gilas," he added.

Barroca, a sports recreation management student, is one of the premier point guards in the UAAP. He is also a member of the Smart Gilas national team that is tasked to earn a slot to the 2012 Olympics.

Signs of trouble over at the FEU camp sprouted lately after a disgruntled Barroca skipped the last practice sessions of the Tamaraws.

Ponceja said the “accusations" had a great psychological impact on the pride of Zamboanga. Barroca, he said, opted to make himself scarce as he pondered on his tough decision to stop playing for his collegiate squad.

“Hindi makatulog and hindi makakain yung bata," said Ponceja. “Si Andy is one of those players who dreamed of making big and earn a career playing basketball. Mahirap lang ang pamilya niyan. But his family was devastated as well upon hearing such accusations."

Asked whether his ward would consider transferring to other schools, Ponceja said it would not be an option.

“Sayang naman kasi 30 units na lang yata and kaya na niya tapusin ito in one-and-a-half year's time," Ponceja said.

According to Ponceja, Barroca was signed to a three-year contract by Smart Gilas. As such, his ward would now devote his time playing for the amateur squad tasked to represent the country in major international tournaments.

He is also expected to be included in the Gilas lineup which would play as guest squad in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA).

Calls made by GMANews.TV to coach Capacio weren’t answered as of posting time.

Barroca’s absence in the Final Four will likely affect the Tamaraws’ playoffs campaign. FEU finished No. 2 at the end of the elimination round to earn a twice-to-beat advantage against University of the East.

Mark Barroca

SBP: Barroca’s Smart Gilas stint not affected by issues with FEU
09/19/2009 | 08:58 PM

Mark Barroca’s personal issues with Far Eastern University hardly affect his standings as a major component of the RP Smart Gilas team.

Noli Eala, executive director of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP), on Saturday said that the country’s sole governing body for the sport is not in any way affected by accusations that Barroca was allegedly involved in game-fixing.

Although reports are unconfirmed, allegations of point-shaving apparently led to the split between the gung-ho playmaker from Zamboanga and the Tamaraws.

For the SBP and the RP Smart Gilas team though, its bond with Barroca remains solid as they consider him a key player in their ambitious bid to land a berth in the 2012 London Olympics.

“Barroca is already with RP Smart Gilas and will continue to be part of the team," said Eala when asked for comment regarding the matter.

Besides, Eala isn’t inclined to believe that the FEU sports recreation management student was involved in shady deals as earlier reports would suggest.

“I don’t think it is fair to pass any judgment on Mark, much less to be alarmed by sketchy reports at this time," the SBP official said.

Barroca was personally handpicked by Serbian coach Rajko Toroman to be the top point man of the RP Smart Gilas squad following a series of tryouts held last year.

In the Nationals’ first major international competition under Toroman, Barroca averaged 18.2 points, 4.0 assists and 3.2 steals during the 2009 FIBA-Asia Champions Cup in Jakarta, Indonesia.

The brilliant plays of Barroca during the week-long competition easily caught the eyes of Lebanese star player Fadi El Khatib and Omar El Turk, who even boasted that the FEU guard is the “next Jimmy Alapag." El Khatib was vocal in saying that he considers Alapag the “best point guard in Asia."

With Barroca scoring 28 points in 31 minutes, the Nationals stunned Al Riyadi of Lebanon in the Champions Cup, 91-86, and made it to the quarterfinals.

Eala said he has yet to hear the side of Barroca on the alleged game-fixing scandal, but admitted having spoken already with FEU officials.

“FEU is handling the matter very well and we should all give them space to sort things out," he said.

Hurt by the accusations, Barroca, through his manager Ed Ponceja, had said he was leaving the Tamaraws and would concentrate instead on his playing stint with Gilas.

On Saturday, the Tams played their Final Four rival UE Warriors without Barroca and announced they were dropping Barroca out of their roster for the rest of the season. - GMANews.TV

FEU already DROP Barroca for good.. this is the decision of the management.. barroca will no longer don FEU jersy but will continue to have his scholarship and graduate in 2010.. this way FEU players can focus on the game at hand next week.. they will no longer expect the return of their star pontguard and for those players who suspect Barroca to be a game fixer will have their chance to prove themselves on the court without him.. Barroca still will be the next main Point Guard of the Philippines.. its a blessing in disguise.. he can now focus on playing for smart-gilas..

Warriors force rubber match with Barroca-less Tamaraws

Warriors force rubber match with Barroca-less Tamaraws

University of the East rode on the hot hands of guard Paul Lee to beat an Andy Mark Barroca-less Far Eastern U side, 84-74, and force a rubber match in their Final Four matchup Saturday in the UAAP Season 72 men’s basketball tournament at the Araneta Coliseum.

Lee fired four long triples in a telling 16-5 bomb that gave the Red Warriors an 84-74 cushion entering the final 1:21 of the game.

The veteran Lee, taking advantage of the absence of the controversial Barroca and the inexperience of FEU guard Ryan Garcia, finished with a career-high 26 points along with eight rebounds and seven assists.

The No. 3 seed Warriors and the No. 2 ranked Tamaraws would thus meet again in a one-game duel to dispute a slot to the best-of-three finals on Thursday.

It was the seventh straight win dating back to the eliminations for the Warriors, who also drew a solid game from veteran big man Narciso Llagas, who produced 19 points, 12 rebounds and one block.

The Tams did not field in erstwhile team leader Barroca, who has had a falling out with the team over allegations of game-fixing, for the important showdown with their U-Belt neighbors.

“With the objective of improving team chemistry, the FEU Tamaraws have decided to play our Final Four game today without Mark Barroca," the team said in a press statement issued before the game.

The Tams, though, missed the leadership of Barroca, who through his manager Ed Ponceja, had also announced his wish to leave the team.

The player supposed to fill in for him, Garcia, was totally outplayed by Lee and his crucial error on an inbounds play and a missed a layup in the middle of the Warriors’ rampage proved costly for the Morayta-based crew.

Nardy, in other thread i have read articles about smart gilas beating Laguna Stallions.. any updates on their tune up games?

they are just pick-up games with the GILAS Four now plus CJ, Japeth and Mark Andi. To complete the line-up the benchwarmers of TNT Lao, Chiao, Oreta and Aldave. The SMART Pampanga Buddies duo of Ford and Chester every now and then make additional warm bodies. These are games done in order for the players that are unattached would not rust. And its nothing much as Dylan, Greg, JR, Aldreach, Ryan, RJ and Rey are still not available. These kind of practice games usually happens on Fridays. In these games winning or losing is not important, what is important is that the boys are in shape and at least would not lose their touch and rhythm. They also don't want the players to become "tamad" and gain unnecessary poundage.

I was not able to watch last Friday but I was told it was a blast as it is really a joy and fun game whenever both CJ and Japeth are there.

Noli Eala's tweets will give us a good idea of how the game went:

Smart gilas played a friendly game with the Laguna Stallions. Gilas won by 40. Japeth 24pts 2reb, Giles 25 pts 11 rebs, barocca 17pts

Sep Salinas, the fil aussie find we are now training scored 15 pts vs laguna. Great talent. Very smart, good upper body, and very smart.

Notice Noli praising Sep Salinas and stating that Sep is "very smart" not once but twice. I wonder if Matt Scheptig played in the game and if he did, how he fared.

Japeth slams door on Burger King

Japeth slams door on Burger King

Controversial amateur stalwart Japeth Aguilar remains firm with his decision not to play for Burger King in the PBA but for Smart-Gilas developmental team.

Aguilar, who arrived last Wednesday from a two-week vacation in the USA with his Chicago-based parents, ex-pro Peter and Josephine, said that he’s already practicing with the Nationals through the invitation of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas.

“Sa national team pa din ako, ‘yun na talaga ang decision ko,” the 6-foot-10 Aguilar told the Bulletin. “Before pa ako pumunta sa US, ‘yun na talaga ang decision ko.”

On Thursday, SBP executive director Noli Eala said that he made the invitation to Aguilar to practice with the team but only to keep him in shape. The former PBA commissioner added that they have not discussed or negotiated a contract with the player or his representative, veteran sportswriter Ronnie Nathanielsz, who is currently in the US.

While in Chicago, Illinois, where he also visited his fiancée Jessica Magley, the 23-year-old Aguilar said he vacillated between playing for Burger King or join Gilas, the all-amateur developmental team of Serbian coach Rajko Toroman.

In the end, a second tour of duty with the national team prevailed for Aguilar, who played college ball with Ateneo, as well as Western Kentucky University, a division 1 school in the US NCAA.

“Inisip ko din (Burger King), pero nakapag-decide na talaga ako,” said Aguilar, who was selected No. 1 overall by Burger King in the recent PBA Rookie Draft.

Reached for comment, PBA chairman Lito Alvarez of Burger King said that he’s still hoping for something positive to happen with the help of SBP president Manny V. Pangilinan, who is a part owner of the fast-food chain company.

However, in the event Aguilar continues to refuse to play for the Whopper, that will be the time, Alvarez said, that they will make their move and ask the PBA Commissioner’s Office and the Board of Governors to look into the matter.

“Tingnan muna natin kung ano pa ang pwedeng mangyari,” said Alvarez, who has mulled having Aguilar ‘‘banned for life’’ in the PBA.

Burger King has a standing offer to Aguilar of P8.7-million, the maximum allowable deal for a rookie in the PBA spread over three years.

Though the SBP has yet to make a formal offer to Aguilar, it has a previous proposal of a salary similar to a PBA rookie, which the player turned down last April during the training camp of Smart-Gilas in Las Vegas.

Serbia Top Slovenia In Epic Semi
19 September 2009
By Adriana Garcia Senchermes

Game Summary

Turning Point: Leading 79-76, Slovenia did not foul Serbia to prevent a three-pointer and the decision backfired as Milos Teodosic buried a shot from behind the arc to tie the game at 79-79. Laka Lakovic then missed a lay-up that would have won the game in regulation, Serbia won in overtime.

Heroes: Serbia's Milos Teodosic poured in eight of his game-high 32 points in overtime to guide his team victory.
He finished 10 of 13 (77%) from the charity stripe and six of 10 from behind the arc.

Key Stats: Serbia outrebounded Slovenia 39-35.

----------------------------------------------------
Milos Teodosic exploded for 32 points as Serbia edged Slovenia 96-92 in overtime on Saturday night to reach the EuroBasket Final.

Dusan Ivkovic's men will take on Spain in Sunday's gold-medal game, a team they beat in their Group C Preliminary Round opener in Warsaw.

Milos Teodosic hit the game-tying three at the end of regulation, and would not be denied in the extra period.
Teodosic, whose three-pointer knotted the contest at 79-79 late in regulation to force the extra period, then poured in eight of his game-high in points in the final five minutes to guide his team to victory.

He finished 10 of 13 (77%) from the charity stripe and six of 10 from behind the arc.

"Milos Teodosic is one of the best point guards in Europe," said Serbia forward Novica Velickovic.

"What he did today was unbelievable. I'm so happy for him.

"This is a great thing for Serbian basketball and this new generation.

"We are a young team, we can't be tired, and tomorrow in the finals we'll give everything."

Serbia have been remarkable.

After a disappointing show at EuroBasket 2007 in Spain, where they lost all three games, Ivkovic was handed the reins and set about building a team with youth and one that would be competitive for years to come.

The aim of Serbia was to qualify for the 2010 FIBA World Championship but now they will leave with at least a silver medal and maybe gold if they can beat the world champions again.

Slovenia, who got a brilliant 25-point performance from Erazem Lorbek before the big man fouled out in the fourth quarter, still led 79-76 with 35 seconds to play after Jaka Lakovic made one of two free-throws.

Instead of fouling and not allowing Serbia to attempt a three-pointer, Slovenia allowed the red-hot Teodosic to free himself for a three-ball and he connected to tie the game at 79-79.

Lakovic had a chance to win with a drive but he missed and the game went to overtime.

Once in the extra period, Serbia got two quick baskets from Nenad Krstic to take the lead for good.

Lorbek fouling out with 4:29 to go in the fourth quarter was a blow for Slovenia.

In addition to his scoring, he had pulled down 10 rebounds and come up with three steals.

"When my brother fouled out that really hurt our play," said Slovenia's Domen Lorbek, who finished with 22 points.
"We didn't go inside anymore.

"Teodosic hurt us with his pick-and-roll and some big three-pointers."

Lakovic's three-ball allowed Slovenia to cut the deficit 92-91 with 12 seconds remaining in overtime but forced to foul

Erazem Lorbek put in another MVP performance, before foulding out late in the fourth.
to stop the clock, Jure Zdovc's team put Teodosic on the line and he made no mistake as he scored his last four points to seal the win.

"Teodosic was the key player of this game," Zdovc said.

"We made stupid mistakes and he punished us.
"I have to congratulate him for his great performance."

Ivkovic was full of praise for his team, who trailed 52-41 midway through the third quarter, scored eight unanswered points as part of a 20-5 run to take a 62-58 lead early in the fourth quarter.

"Our defense in the second half was really great and I think we deserve this victory," he said.

"But Slovenia really played great the whole competition."

Slovenia must now beat Greece - losers to Spain in the first Semi-Final - in the bronze-medal game on Sunday.

Serbia will have little time to recover before they take on Spain for the second time in the tournament.

Serbia out-rebounded Slovenia 39-35.

Krstic and Kosta Perovic poured in 18 points apiece.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

I guess we're similarly doing the same thing as Serbia. I was really surprised that this Serbian team made it to the finals despite its new and young recruits. There was no Milicic, Jaric, or any familiar face in this current team.

Coach Rajko must be proud.
