shooting is not the only key to win games. in ur game against lebanon in jones cup u shot above 60 % from outside the arc still u managed to loose by 12 points.u need to work on ur penetrations and inside scoring. i believe u already have what it takes to shoot the ball!.

I do agree with you. But I think our shooting is inconsistent. Also our turnover is just too much. We are also lacking in height and bulk, some of our small palyers were forced to stretch their capabilities and I think in the long run it would only injure them.

MANILA, Philippines - After losing a valuable material for its buildup, the Smart Gilas Pilipinas National Team has gained an important acquisition crucial to the country's 2012 Olympic dream.

Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas executive director Noli Eala said Smart Gilas is in the process of finalizing the contract of CJ Giles, a 6-foot-11 American and NBA prospect who agreed to don the national colors as a naturalized player.

According to Eala, the SBP has offered two possible deals for Giles—a one-year contract with the SBP exercising the right of first refusal or a two-year pact with an option to play in the NBA and participate in its summer camps.

"As long as he makes himself available during critical periods that we need him, I see no problem with CJ trying out in the NBA,'' said Eala, who refused to dwell on the financial side of each contract proposal.

Eala added Chris Emens, Giles' agent, is carefully studying which path to take and has been making arrangements for the former Los Angeles Laker inside operator to travel to Manila on the first week of August.

The expected arrival of Giles, who powered Smart Gilas to a fifth-place finish in the tough Fiba-Asia Champions Cup in Jakarta two months ago, has somehow eased the pain of losing Japeth Aguilar to the PBA.

While seeing action with the Powerade-Team Pilipinas in the Jones Cup in Taipei last week, the 6-foot-10 Aguilar had decided to jump into the PBA Rookie Draft where a lucrative offer awaits him.

RP coach Rajko Toroman expressed interest on Aguilar, who played for Western Kentucky University, a US NCAA Division I school, but will now have to think for other options to strengthen Smart Gilas' buildup for the 2011 Fiba-Asia Championships.

Eala said Giles would go through the stringent process of naturalization with the government agencies concerned before Congress acts on the application.

"Our immigration lawyers have already prepared a plan of action,'' said Eala. "It will not be easy but I'm confident that we can justify the naturalization of CJ.''

Eala said Giles would be one of two naturalized players being eyed by the SBP for the 2011 Fiba-Asia Championships, the qualifying event for the 2012 London Olympics.

"The (SBP) board is targeting at least two naturalized players just in case Giles gets injured,'' Eala explained.

Besides Giles, Eala said Filipino-foreign dribbler Chris Lutz is set to arrive tomorrow from the United States. The 6-foot-4 Lutz, who was discovered by the SBP during its US training camp in Las Vegas, has a decent touch from long range.

"We hope he (Lutz) can be the answer and the next Chip Engelland,'' said Eala.

Meanwhile, Eala said the SBP has offered to host the 2010 Stankovic Cup and the 2011 Fiba-Asia Champions Cup in the Philippines during their meeting with International Basketball Federation (Fiba) officials last week in Geneva.

I saw Coach Rajko and Coach Spoelstra in the Ateneo-Adamson game. Coach Toroman I think is really keen on finding more talents from our college leagues especially in Manila. Hope he can have some help in finding more recruits from the Southern part of our Country. This man is really doing his job.

Kudos to SBP.

Saw him too bro. I wonder who caught his eye

I hope our the SMART GILAS team will be a regular staple in the PBA. Also I hope the PBA will adjust the rules and implement an all amateur / international rule to their tournament. it will force all these teams to retool and improve more in their all around basketball skills which also will give our own national team a year round venue to play basketball as a team. Also, If this team would be successful, I hope we can get or entice more sponsors to help the team financially so that our NT's management can match the salaries offered in the PBA. say, GSIS, SM, MERALCO etc. pitch in. In the days of Cojuangco, I think some members of the team were even granted the opportunity to work in his companies before like Magnolia and SMC. It would be added incentive for these players or NT players to stay as NT if they know that after their basketball days are over there would be something for them to look forward ...

And defense bro. Defense wins championships. hehehe. You can have a good shooting night and a bad defense on the same night. I think RP showed that when we faced you guys during the Jones Cup. And you know what happened. We lost by 12 points. hehehe

The SBP better put a 24 hour watch on Lutz. I'll bet the PBA agents will be circling Lutz like hungry sharks or did SBP already sign Lutz up ?

If that happens, then there is indeed a a competition between PBA and SBP when it comes to getting Really Good players.

guys i think we are to harsh on Mr. Sonny Barrios, reality check people PBA is an entity with "revenue crazy" companies having a strong grip on its neck. If we let these companies die due to bankruptcy, well have no more premier league in the country.

Sonny Barrios is just a hostage of these companies (look at Eala, he vowed change in the system and they kicked him out of the system), i commend Barrios for having a good resiliency for the league to survive in this economic pinch that our country is having. The thing with these companies is that they have no ears for the fans, having a balanced say from each side would really boost and improve the PBA's marketability and its international appeal.

uh , i don't recall Eala was booted out in the PBA because of some economic related policies, I think he was given the door for having a relationship with a married woman, and it does not bode well for the image of PBA...

they just made that as an excuse but the reality is that he was booted out for some other reasons. and the 9th place finish in the 2007 fiba did not help moderate the negative relationship he had with the other pba bosses.

24 yrs old 6-3 chris lutz of marshall thundering herd would be a good addition for phil national team. As a marshall junior, he averaged 10.7 ppg, 2.4 rpg & 2.4 apg for 2008-2009 US NCAA 1st div. season. A quick shooting guard with a nice jumpshot and good shooting touch from perimeter, lutz can score off the dribble, create shots for himself & for his teammates a vital aspect for tough international competition where zone defense and bigger defenders are obstacles.

Smart Gilas wants to help Barako Bull

FORMER Philippine Basketball Association chairman Ricky Vargas said his “off the cuff” offer to the PBA board of governors to help tide over the problems faced by Red Bull Barako due to the financial difficulties of the Photokina franchise was made in good faith and in response to an appeal by Buddy Encarnado of Sta. Lucia Realty that the league should help teams in trouble.

The creative solution broached by Vargas was for the Smart Gilas national team, coached by Rakjo Toroman, to take the place of Red Bull for the forthcoming season. And since co-branding has been approved, he suggested that the league allow the Barako Bull logo to be placed on the back of the Smart Gilas team jerseys.

In this way, Photokina would not have to spend on maintaining a team until it hopefully recovers from its present predicament where the salaries of players and the coaching staff have been in arrears. “This will not merely help Red Bull, more importantly it will help the PBA,” said Vargas. “This is because Smart Gilas will be a competitive team out to win and since it will represent the Philippines in next year’s London Olympic qualifier will be an attraction.”

Vargas said that if this is not feasible. at least he tried to find a solution to a situation that is bound to hurt the league which often prides itself on the competitive balance of its teams.

Under the proposal, all Smart Gilas games will be counted just as they were when the Northern Consolidated team played as a guest team in the PBA and ended its stint by winning the import reinforced conference, sweeping Manila Beer, anchored by Michael Young and Harold Keeling in 1985. i agree ur defense needs a lot of work.and what i saw also in jones cup is ur lack of system and enthusiasm as if ur team is playing for show off and fun, not to win and make good results.in ur game against lebanon other then ur bad defense u couldnt penetrate the lebanese basket easily.if it wasnt for ur great shooting u would have lost by 30 points.anyways good luck in the asian cup and i really hope that u make it the wc.:)

that would help the pba, sbp, and red bull management for sure.but how about the red players and other personnel?if some of them are still in contract, they need to be paid still. why would red bull pay them if they will not play?and play or not, they are under contract so they need to be paid. so that would still be a big cost for red bull.only the actual operating costs outside of salaries would be saved in this proposal. anyway its up to the chuas. in the other papers, they have already responded to barrios that they will continue this coming season.
