For me the missing pieces of the team are Paul Lee, Al-Husaini, Japeth Aguilar, Chris Lutz, Sean Anthony and Junmar Fajardo. with them in the Smart Gilas team we could win it all in asia by 2011! :) and ofcourse we should double time on naturalizing CJ giles.

1. PG- Andi Mark Barroca 5'9 -Mr. Basketball of the Phil in the future.
2. PG- JV Casio 5'10 -Great decision maker and good shooter.
3. SG- Chris Tiu 5'11 -Great Basketball IQ and Good leader.
4. SG- Chris Lutz 6'3 -The next Allan Caidic.
5. SF/SG- Dylan Ababou 6'3 -Pinoy version of Grant Hill who can shoot the 3.
6. SF- Sean Anthony 6'4 -ala Rudy Hatfield good defender.
7. SF- Mac Baracael 6'4 -Tenacity! and Intensity! +2nd life damn you lucky..
8. SF/PF- Aldrich Ramos 6'6 -Hardworker and can shoot from the outside
9. PF- Rabeh Al-Husaini 6'8 -Smaller version of Tim Duncan without D.
10. PF-Japeth Aguilar 6'9 - smaller version of CJ giles.
11. C-Junmar Fajardo 6'9 - better than Greg Slaughter im sure of that :D
12. C-CJ Giles 6'11 -The Captain of our defense. 7'4 wingspan. 38" vertical leap, good perimeter shooter, good freethrow shooter, and fast for his size.

Reserves:
Ryan Buenafe-still young
Greg Slaughter-need to develop more, lacks intensity
Paul Lee-ball hugger
Cawaling-to shy
Jazul-3rd PG of the team
Guevarra-Inconsistent
Ballesteros-To small for his position in international basketball
Yeah maybe you are right but can you say Junmar is also small to play center in international basketball how can you say junmar is he better center in international competition than greg's potential
He is 6'9 max :D

I think paul lee will just be a ordinary shooting guard that will be an all star in the pba(because of height?) but with toroman seeing his potential I just want him to improve in intl. ballgame he has only 3 yrs in eligibility due to transfer rules? and I think itt his last year and like Rabeh and Nonoy he will test his market value before he sign to gilas remeber if the price is right we can see Polly in the pba sooner together with the maybe 18-20 man sbp pool

Paul Lee has at least two more years of eligibility left. He was Eric Salamat's classmate in San Sebastian, then UE recruited him and put him in their Team B for a season. He then played his first year in UE's Team A in 2007.

“THE Philippines plays the most exciting basketball in this tournament.” -in the 20th Fiba-Asia Champions Challenge Cup in Jakarta

Get used to that. Always expect that inspirational remark coming from a foreigner w/ a filipino press. Same thing will happen if an indonesian journalist conducted an interview and asked the american import of qatar who played the most exciting brand of basketball in jakarta :p (answer: Satria Muda of Indonesia) Probably the phils was the most exciting to watch in jakarta due to quickness and speed

Japeth to decide future after NBDL cage camp
By Joaquin Henson Updated May 25, 2009 12:00 AM

MANILA, Philippines - Former Ateneo and Western Kentucky University center Japeth Aguilar will decide whether or not to join the PBA draft this year after playing in the NBDL camp starting June 19 but is making himself available for the Philippine team of either Yeng Guiao or Rajko Toroman.

Aguilar, 22, has committed to join Guiao’s national squad which will represent the country in the FIBA-Asia Championships in Tianjin, China, on Aug. 6-16 if he is enlisted. Guiao excluded Aguilar from the 12-man team that will try to book a ticket to Tianjin via the SEABA Championships in Medan, Indonesia, on June 6-10.

But SBP executive director Noli Eala said yesterday Toroman has also invited Aguilar to join the Smart Gilas developmental team that will wear the national colors at the Asian Games in Guangzhou, China, on Nov. 11-27 next year.

Eala said playing for both national squads will be a boost to Aguilar’s career and saw no impediment in suiting up for Smart Gilas under Toroman and Powerade under Guiao. However, if Aguilar inks a three-year contract with Smart Gilas, he will automatically forego applying for the PBA draft until after the 2012 London Olympics.

“It’s no problem with the SBP if Japeth plays for both Rajko and Yeng,” said Eala. “Japeth’s father Peter has confirmed a commitment to play for Yeng. And Japeth confided in Chris (Tiu) that he’d like to play for Rajko, too. My worry is if Japeth plays for Powerade, what happens if he gets injured? With Smart Gilas, we’re offering a three-year commitment with an option to leave if he is ever called up to play in the NBA or the Euroleague.”

Eala said Aguilar has been offered a firm contract by Smart Gilas but declined to provide details of the terms. Aguilar was also offered a contract by Powerade with a reported salary of P150,000 a month for three months.

“Japeth is very close with two Serbian players in Western Kentucky and they’ve spoken highly of Rajko whose reputation in Serbia is glowing,” continued Eala. “I think Japeth would really like to play with us.”

Eala said he is hoping Japeth will follow his father’s career path.

“Peter knows the Northern Cement program of the ’80s under Ambassador Cojuangco because he was part of it,” said Eala. “After maturing with the national team, he joined the pros and played five years. We’re applying the same formula that was so successful with Northern Cement. We’re hoping Japeth will do as his father did. He’ll be more than ready to dominate in the PBA after playing three years with Rajko.”

Eala said he’s convinced Aguilar is the real thing.

The 6-9, 225-pound Aguilar showed up at Smart Gilas’ Fil-Am camp in Las Vegas last month and impressed the coaching staff, particularly Toroman. He compiled 15 points, five rebounds and two blocked shots in Smart Gilas’ 108-98 win over the Las Vegas Aces during the camp.

“Japeth’s come of age,” said Eala. “He’s amazing. He has quickness and agility. He’s strong and athletic. He’s aggressive and unstoppable close to the basket. In Las Vegas, he did a slam dunk exhibition where he threw the ball from back of the board, caught it in front of the rim and stuffed it in on the reverse. Rajko believes he’s ready for the Euroleague and he can be the first Filipino to play in Europe. Japeth has dreams of someday playing in the NBA. His girlfriend’s father used to work for an NBA team as a scout and he’d like to prove he can play in the majors. The problem is Japeth’s stats at Western Kentucky weren’t outstanding because he hardly got playing time. Rajko wants to expose him to international scouts. He’s confident once the scouts see how he plays, Japeth will be picked up.”

This past season, Aguilar averaged only 1.5 points and 5.1 minutes in 14 games for Western Kentucky with 20 DNPs (Did Not Play). The year before, he played in only three games.

Eala said Aguilar planned to fly to Manila this month for the chance to play for Powerade at the SEABA Championships then return to the US on June 13 to get ready for the NBDL camp. But without the benefit of practicing with the all-pro squad, Aguilar decided to stay in the US as Guiao stuck to a PBA selection for the Medan tournament.

Eala said another Filipino playing in the NCAA, 6-9 Gian Chiu, showed up at the Las Vegas camp.

“Gian joined the drills but didn’t play a game because of a knee injury,” said Eala. “He’s a very smart player. He lacks experience but he’s got a big upside. I’m just not sure if he’s really focused on playing as a career because he’s so intelligent that he might end up becoming a doctor or a lawyer.”

Two Fil-Ams who were impressive in camp were 6-3 Chris Lutz of Marshall University and 6-4 Sean Anthony of McGill University. Eala said Lutz and Anthony were invited to join Smart Gilas in a four-game exhibition tour in Japan this week.

“Sean might join us but Chris is still working on getting a passport,” said Eala. “The bulk of the team will leave for Japan with Rajko on Monday (today). Others will fly over a few days later. R. J. Jazul and Rey Guevara might miss the series because of commitments with Letran but we’ve spoken with coach Louie (Alas) about allowing them to go. Japan is preparing for the East Asian Championships starting June 10 and they’d like to warm up by playing with our national team.”

hmmm... they are not interested any more to Stanley Pringle... and btw, japeth should go smart gilas... playing in Europe and someday in NBA is a great feat for a filipino

Well on the contrary getting used to that would become so boring, does it not ? As host country's journalist, being gracious is always a must, truth is, they hated us when we beat SM Britama.:p:D

But overall, Smart-Gilas recent performance was a pleasant surprise to everyone and surely everyone felt proud of our team.

Can't wait for Japan trip though and see how it goes.....

If you watch the PBL last saturday, Mark Barroca is the real deal for me he can be the #1 pick in the 09 PBA draft....right now,I love ateneo but FEU is my top choice to win this year...

I hope when he will be in Japan he will not get distracted with those Japanese chicks. :D

Japan trip could seal Giles deal

MANILA, Philippines - Gain more international experience and , more importantly, convince CJ Giles to become a part of an ambitious project to bring the Philippine quintet back to the Olympics.

They are the main goals of the action-hungry Smart Gilas-Pilipinas national team when it travels to Japan Monday for a four-game exhibition series just days after finishing fifth in the Fiba-Asia Champions Cup in Indonesia

Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas executive director Noli Eala expressed optimism in its effort to persuade the 6-foot-11 import Giles to become a naturalized player for Smart Gilas in the 2011 Fiba-Asia Championship, the qualifying tournament for the 2012 London Olympics.

“He is open to the idea, which is a good start,” said Eala. “We will talk to CJ’s agent (JR Harris) and to him while in Tokyo.”

Giles has received invitations from the Milwaukee Bucks, Orlando Magic and Toronto Raptors to join the NBA camp two months from now but he seemed reluctant to leave the RP squad.

“In the NBA, I will just be another guy sitting on the bench,” Giles had earlier said.

Smart Gilas, which subdued the Rashad Bell-reinforced Talk ‘N Text, 94-91, in a tuneup game Sunday, was invited to play a series of exhibition matches against the Japanese national team.

Scouts were impressed with the RP team composed of collegiate standouts and mentored by Smart Gilas coach Rajko Toroman during the Champions Cup and this became its ticket for the all-expense paid trip to Japan.

Eala said Filipino-Canadian Sean Anthony would join Smart Gilas in Japan while the SBP is hoping to bring Chris Lutz along if the Filipino-American dribbler could get his passport in time.

“We will bring Sean Anthony and possibly Chris Lutz if he can fix his passport,” said Eala.

Besides Japeth Aguilar, Anthony, a four-time all-star in the Quebec University Basketball League, and Lutz, a 6-4 guard who played for Purdue and Marshall U, are the new additions to the team seeking to bring the Philippines back to the Olympics.

I hope that a local tv network could cover the games in Japan so that we can see it live here in the philippines:)
