SBP Long-Term National Pool (Vol. XXII)

what are the chances that SBP can get Christian Standhardinger to play for the PH team? if he can't play in a FIBA sanctioned tourney due to eligibility issues, can he play in the Asiad?
Using ineligibles goes against the principle of a long-term national pool. Better to add raw players knowing what they learn from their exposure in these tournaments can eventually benefit the NT.

Whoa! You guys know a lot regarding "geography" of that "area" in QC. More! more! I'm totally occupied. lol.

As for WC preparations, we really need to develop our bigs like Japeth, Fajardo and especially Slaughter. Send them to training camps abroad with other tall amateur players like Sanggalang, Van Opstal and Almazan .

They are obligated to their club teams and schools, how exaclty are we going to train them?

Point is, those interested in playing for the national team would have to have a great PBA season if they want to convince Chot they are capable. That said, time for Chot to announce that he's planning for a 30 player pool where he'll the Final 12.
then watch them kill each other in the next 2 to 3 conferences. We're in for a greaaat PBA seasob ahead, thanks to Gilas.

that may be true but a short term benefit is not as bad as it looks like. if stanhardinger can play in the asiad, then we should get him. while our real national team hone their skills in the (hopefully) improved PBA, fil-fors who are not fiba-eligible like stanhardinger and possibly pringle can temporarily represent the country in the other important sports event. win-win situation

Just this: last spot in the Asian Games between Sanggalang and Standhardinger. Who do you pick? The former who you can use in future tourneys or the latter, a stop-gap solution? Let's say BOTH actually contributes major numbers if selected:

After Sanggalang explosion: wow! We just found our replacement for Ranidel! Imagine our depth at the PF spot!
After Stanhardinger explosion: wow! What a kid excited to see him in the PBA or other pro leagues!

.

Some of my buddies in Meralco made that a staple more popular than rice. ;) I remember it being so close to the Culmat Bldg. near the corner of Tomas Morato where a Petron station was.

Yes, the Scout area and its outlying periphery make for good stories that crack me up....

As for Toroman's statements, I'll take it all with a grain of salt. The guy is now beholden to Philippine basketball employers, and would not say anything impolitic to jeopardize his gig. Very flattering words... the kind that could make the recipient complacent.

I would put more weight on Becirovic's frank observation post-Finals (re: need height in Worlds, smallball works better if one is hosting, et al).

College buddies of mine used to sing the Jacksons' version of "Happy" whenever we find our gimmick time somewhere in this area. Hit and miss really, you churn out a number and pray that you win the jackpot - just like the lottery (or sweepstakes as it was called back then). Wonder if they still use the same old mattresses (thick brown 4" mattresses made of cheap leatherette) walled by plyboards that serve as dividers for each cubicle. Creaking sound and all but these make up for a wonderful (yet treacherous) nocturnal adventure.

Yes, I appreciate Becirovic's statement more than anything else. This one comes from someone who's not expected to say the most polite words. I'd take him as our next national team coach more than Baldwin or Toroman if ever.

One thing we do need to recognize is the one advantage that Chot brings to the table that no foreign coach can ever possess. Chot is a master motivator, a popular speaker in the seminar circuits discussing, among all things, motivation. Reyes proved this, got his team not just physically but emotionally involved in the nationalistic cause, and lifted their spirits like no other. Chot was extremely credible to the eyes of his players because he's a Filipino himself. When we saw an emotional Reyes breaking down in the bench right after the SK game, that was a moment to behold. I doubt if Baldwin, Becirovic or Toroman would have created the same impact to the Filipino fans by doing the same thing.

Since the Worlds next year and the Asiad will be held only weeks apart. It is safe to assume that Chot won't handle the team to the Asiad (cadets most definitely).

Lock it down as a BIG NObecause PBA won't allow (or aren't obliged, in the current set-up) it.

Most likely jong uichico will coach the asiad games team

Ideally, our 2014 Asiad team should be our 2013 SEA Games with a few PBA reinforcements

Alamazan and Sanggalang,I just hope these two power forwards would improve more and maybe add up some upper body strength. The two guys could as as Ping and Ranidel's under studies.Heck they should even learn how to shoot 3 point shots on a very consistent basis. Our main weapon really is our defense. The next batch should learn how to play the same harassing defense Gilas has applied throughout the tournament. While we have to find small forwards and shooting guards (6'3-6'5 players) that could shoot the three's ala Jeff Chan,I think we have a lot of point guards that maybe not as quick as castro but can shoot the threes on a regular basis. We have Lee,Casio even Tiu can play that point guard spot and be deadly beyond the arc, while we have guys like Kevin Alas,RR Garcia and even Terrence Romeo that can be our next contenders for the point guard position.

it's not a bad scenario considering we also want the pba to flourish. the ordinary filipino fan is not distracted by the complications of eligibility issues. when stanhardinger represents the ph in the asiad, to them, he is a filipino. and when he enters the pba, god-willing, the pba will also make a killing . anyway, i totally forgot about sanggalang. that kid has lots of potential to be included in the future ph team. aldrech ramos also comes to mind.

before you consider sanggalang, you have to remember he has a manager, who advised him to skip the cadet program. Dont know how good his ties are with SBP after that.

eventually, he'll play in the PBA. one doesnt have to be in the cadet pool to be considered to join the national team. just ask coach yeng

depends on what PBA team he'll play for. let's just hope Sangalang and Slaughter both get picked by Rain Or Shine. Friendly owner na, may Extra Rice mentoring pa.

Ronald Pascual at 6'3, Ray Parks at 6'4 are the young guns who can play the shooting guard in the future

There is this guy from the south, Bonleon, who is a deadshot from the three point area. He's 6'4 and 18 yrs of age.
Though he had a rough start with UAAP, if given the proper venue and training, the future is bright with him.

SBP mulls bid for Fiba 3x3 Under-18 world tourney
By Gerry Ramos
August 13, 2013, 05:26 pm

FIBA-Asia Championship now, the Fiba 3x3 Under-18 World Championship later.

Sonny Barrios, the executive director of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP), said the federation is now considering bidding for the right to stage the U-18 world 3x3 event two years from now.

The plan comes in the aftermath of the country’s successful hosting of the 27th Fiba-Asia Championship.

Barrios said on Tuesday at the weekly Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Forum that even before the qualifier to the 2014 Fiba-World Cup was held here, the SBP already received a letter from the world governing body of the sport on whether it is interested in hosting the event set for June 2015.

Barrios added SBP president Manny V. Pangilinan told him to take a closer look at the feasibility of holding here a basketball event of world magnitude.

“He (MVP) said let’s take a serious look at it,” said Barrios in the same session. “But that was before this hosting of the Fiba-Asia Championship. Actually, ang Fiba sumulat sa lahat ng mga interesadong mag-host ng 3-on-3.”

“But I told Mr. Pangilinan na hintayin muna natin `yung result ng (Fiba-Asia) hosting. Maganda `yung hosting experience natin, a lot of lessons were learned.”

Indonesia is hosting the 3x3 U18 world meet this year, with Rimini, Italy and Alcobendas, Spain staging the first two editions in 2011 and 2012, respectively.

The 3-on-3 tournament is the new event Fiba is trying to promote in helping globalize basketball. It features two teams of three players each playing on a standard half-court.

According to Barrios, Fiba-Asia officials were more than satisfied with the way the biennial meet was hosted by the country for the first time in 40 years.

“While it may not be perfect, they (Fiba-Asia) were lauding us, thanking us. More than satisfactory, they were overwhelmed by the public’s response. Hindi nila sukat akalain `yung support ng public,” said the former PBA commissioner.

Barrios added he won’t even be surprised if Fiba will try to use the country’s recent hosting as model image of the world basketball federation.

“They (Fiba) are on an aggressive marketing blitz to sell basketball to the world kaya hindi ako magugulat kung magiging image model tayo ng basketball hosting,” he said.

The huge crowd response was one of the major factors for the success of Gilas Pilipinas, which qualified for a berth in the Fiba-World Cup next year in Spain following its silver medal finish in the Fiba-Asia behind eventual champion Iran.

As for what’s the next step of the national team and coach Chot Reyes as they gear up for the country’s first stint in the world championship after 1978, Barrios would rather not speculate at the moment.

“What’s next, wala pa akong sagot doon. Allow us to savor the victory first kahit isang linggo lang,” the SBP executive said while smiling.

“Malaking pangtanggal ng pagod at paghihirap yung napasaya natin ang sambayanang Pilipino.”

we know now what we needs, point guards/guards who are quick, can penetrate and can shoot.
that has been the strength of pinoys. coach chot, with his system, he maximized our strength.
we have plenty of young prospects.

yes, plenty. but for 2014 wc and asiad, there's not much that we can say could possibly equal or better the trio of chan, fonacier, and david and that of castro, alapag, and tenorio.

for pg, in d pba i can only think of paul lee and to a lesser extent tiu. casio of course is a goner for now. in d cadet team, alas is d best bet.

at sg, i can only think of maliksi if he could up his game by 2014. in d cadet team, lanete perhaps but he's too one-dimensional right now. parks could provide some athleticism at d sg position but it would heavily depend on what he'd do after this uaap season.
