Gilas coach Chot Reyes was slapped a technical foul by Lebanese referee Marwan Egho in the first quarter of the game against Iran in the FIBA Asia Cup semifinals at the Ota Gym here last Friday. While barking at Gabe Norwood, Reyes was surprised to be tagged and couldn’t believe it particularly as under FIBA rules, a technical foul results in two free throws and possession. Egho said Reyes overstepped the sideline and got on the court.

Throughout the contest, Egho had the hots for the Philippines. L. A. Tenorio said he was constantly badgered by Egho who kept reminding that he was under close scrutiny. When assistant coach Joseph Uichico got up to signal a timeout with Reyes on the bench, Egho waived him away, insisting it should be the head coach making the call. When Reyes tried to talk to Egho, the referee refused to listen. Iran certainly didn’t need a boost from Egho to get ahead. Or did it?

7.5 Either the coach or the assistant coach, but only one of them at any given time,
is permitted to remain standing during the game. They may address the players verbally
during the game provided they remain within their team bench area. The
assistant coach shall not address the officials.

Let’s look at the positive for a change,
First did we benefit with the Jones and Asia cup experience? I say with a resounding YES, we built some chemistry, identified effective players for the DDO, and identified who won’t be effective, what are weaknesses are we also realise where we are relative to our Asian rivals ( we are competitive and medal contenders but are not yet at the level of the elite teams)
Secondly regarding scouting , Chot actually mentioned this prior to the Jones cup and said at this stage we have not done any scouting, obviously this will not be the case this FIBA Asia
On shooting and possibly getting a shooting coach, I actually don’t think this is what we need rather we need more of sports psychologist , there is actually such a thing, Most Olympic contingents have as part of their coaching staff a sports psychologist who prepares athletes mentally to be able to perform at their best when it counts . Remember also that most of these player will be back with their mother teams, so really there is no point in getting a shooting coach if you can’t practice regularly with him, shooting is all about practice. And really it’s in your younger development years that you work on this, not as professionals and especially not in player pick up system from many teams environment, What we need is “mental psychological coach” who can work with Chot to identify what is expected from each player. If Chot wants David to be our “closer” then he has to be mentally prepared for that role. Or for example if Dillinger and Gabe are supposed to shoot the open jumper when teams sag of them (which they were) they have to have the confidence and green light to take it without any finger pointing that they did the wrong thing.
In regards to the next few months up to February or whole of PBA 1st conference. I actually suggest that the National team members who belong to PBA teams take a break from practice. The most reasonable next tournament to join is the DOHA invitationals early next year, for this I suggest Doulthit, Slaughers, Guenelas, Laneta, if possible Williams, Castro and Ryan make up the core of the team with the remaining slots going to NLEX players or cadet’s . Ravena etc. This will be great training for Slaughers and to determine if he really is suitable

I still believe RSA side will lend players if requested by Coach Chot for next years tournament.

i am hopeful too. noli eala cannot just reverse his recent statement that they will lend players to gilas. otherwise, the public will outdo each other to lynch him to painful death. i, too, will participate in that mob.

actually we need to instill better discipline when we play internationally, a number of our players have been caught standing in the sideline.

But in fairness right after MVP questioned FIBA-Asia's integrity, the officials became super strict to our team, I noticed one time Tenorio was substituted in the Iran game and he came from the very other end of the playing court, when he was about to sit on our bench, the Lebanese Referee gave him a warning that he'll give him a technical if he does not sit quickly.
They were really unto us, there were other similar instances in the 3 knock-out games we played.

Yeah let's form an IBN MOB LOL.

Do we really need those guys? Slaughter/Alapag/Casio/Reyes/Thoss/Aguillar ((yeah give this guy another chance) might be enough. At least we know those guys jell well together with our current players. An what if SMC will only release them at the last minute? Will Chot pick them over "lesser" talented players whose been practicing with them for a longer time? Haysss the problems keeps on coming.

I would say the problem on scouting is true. This is not to offer as a excuse but the facts about the matter. Its because of budget constraints and personnel availability.

As I explained it from way-way back, SMART Management do things differently from the usual way basketball teams are handled. They treat the team like a Corporate Cost Center wherein it should comply strictly within the corporate red tape, adhere to the yearly approved budget, etc. Due to high cost of airfare, hotel accommodations, food, etc the prior justifications (proof that there is such a tournament, names of the teams/players to be scouted, etc) of trips should be made before it could be itemized as a unscheduled activity into the budget. Its hard to explain as there are a lot of restrictions. You could not blame the org to have it this away as foreign trips are historically been abused by both public and private officials thus unexplained and unliquidated travel expenses are accumulated.

We all know Coach Chot just started to be exclusively for the Gilas 2.0 program only recently, Coach Jong who was supposed to be exclusively for Gilas was all of the sudden appointed as Meralco Consultant. If we rundown the names of the coaching staff it was only Josh Reyes (Chot's son) who is really free but only after Talk N Text's campaign last PBA season. Coach Ryan Gregorio did not join the Tokyo trip as he was preoccupied with the Preseason preparations of Meralco. Nash Racela was also left in Manila as he among those tasked to supervise the Preseason preparations of Talk N Text plus he is also busy assembling a new PBA D-League team under the umbrella of HTC Philippines. Then as we know Coach Norman Black is very much preoccupied with the Ateneo Blue Eagles at the UAAP.

sir nardy, what are the post-tokyo plans of our team? what tournaments or friendlies are stored for them before lebanon 2013? are they going abroad to play some games?

am sorry we are all in the dark. we are awaiting mvp's instructions or more so what are his plans.

fact is if he goes, we go. if we are gotten back will depend on new management.

i fell sorry for the guy as he does not want to get mixed-up in politics but politics is all over him ..... at Ateneo .... with FIBA-Asia .... POC elections ..... his war with RSA ..... accusations by Trillanes .... pressure from PNoy .... pressure from China

But if its status quo .... Chot will be busy evaluating who will be at the Cadet Team and plot on Gilas future training program. The dynamics changed as prior plans were on the assumption we are the Hosts in 2013. He would probably test SMC's true intentions on lending its players. Sit down with Comm Salud and see how the PBA sked could be adjusted in order free the Gilas players for training.

There's the question on who would play at the FIBA-Asia Champions Cup at Beirut. Its supposed to be ABL's San Miguel Beermen but from last I heard, they have no team ready to be competitive. If ever I guess it could be a Select team with NLEX players plus reinforcements.

is this a way of saying sir nardy that MVP is not just considering to severe ties with ateneo basketball but also with the SBP and gilas program as well? :(

and i still believe that toroman will come back in the sideline with chot reyes, the heck we run out of set plays in the last two games of ASIA-Cup, chot reyes DDO run out of gas, and he needs toroman's playbook, we dont need another one on one plays just like what happen vs taiwan, iran, qatar.

I would not say severe ties ..... the guy is going rough times then politics is everywhere trying to suck him in.

Alam mo yung a person wanting some peace and quiet in order to straighten-up his mind, its just too many problems not of his doing are popping-up one after the other. first and foremost he needs to safeguard his business first, cracks are coming-out, His enemies are attacking him at all fronts. Now he needs to prioritize on what to do.

If ever he'll probably lie-low on basketball, give Chot a budget give him the hands on authority on the Gilas Program as he needs to protect his business empire first. His business empire is from where we get the money to finance the Gilas Program, if it collapses what happens.

There are other problems looming on the horizon as those are serious accusations made by Trillanes and his position with PNoy is shaky as it does not help that he is a known supporter of Erap and UNA.

pardon me for asking this sir, but does this mean that he might declare the SBP chairmanship vacant soon? huwag naman sana... or if it's inevitable, huwag naman sana ngayon.

I just wanted to say SMC lending players is all relative, what does it really mean? Depending on what it really means or the conditions set will determind Chot's decision to include them in the final line-up or not next year. I will say this it is easier to integrate a big man in the DDO than it is a perimeter player with limited practice. For me if SMC says all right you can have Fajardo and Pingris but only for FIBA Asia only. Nothing more . I would take them even if it's far from ideal (no preperation). but if he says the same thing for Lassister, Cabagnot, Yap etc. I think it would be reckless for Chot to take them in, ahead of the regular Jones and Asia cup members

Elections would soon come-up. Its within the Olympic cycle.

Even when the troubles have not popped-up, there were no indications he'll be running again. He has been consistently saying “I’m not built to be a politician” and "I can help Philippine sport in a different capacity".

I remember he bowed down to the appeals of the different stakeholders to run as SBP President so that he's there to unify. However times has changed and due to his current situation with RSA, he now became part of the reason for the division in the sport.

Like what other posters said, maybe its for the best of Philippine Basketball that the SBP is now headed by a independent person but is respected and supported by both the sides of RSA and MVP.

My best guess is that MVP will continue with his basketball plans and will make sure that he sees his SMART-Gilas program through - up until 2013 for the FIBA-Asia. The SBP elections, if I'm not mistaken, is slated this year (kindly correct me on this Nardy if ever) and if he doesn't run, then everything that he has laid down for the past 5 years will all go to waste.

However, he might be contemplating on severing his ties with several of his other projects. I can't see him leaving the Philippines because of his vast stake in several key businesses. He also is the key guy of the Salim Group here in the Philippines so it's not like he can turn his back readily. There are interests that he would need to protect - not just his but his employer as well. He might take a "rest" in providing support to other programs - Ateneo being one of them.

Hopefully, MVP would see things accordingly. The national government obviously would have to do something to appease him and this early, there are already indications that senators and congressmen are supporting him. For every Trillanes around, he can always count on the support of an Estrada or an Enrile.

Hard to find someone who's not only independent, but will have the support and respect of these two business moguls.

Danding Cojuangco???

Actually its overdue.

FYI - The Supreme Court (SC) validated the election of the group of Misamis Oriental Gov. Oscar Moreno and business tycoon Manuel V. Pangilinan, as chairman and president, respectively, of the Basketball Association of the Philippines-Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (BAP-SBP). The high court made the validation by affirming the Court of Appeals (CA) ruling over the BAP-SBP tenure of Moreno and Pangilinan from 2008 to 2012. Aside from Moreno and Pangilinan, the SC validated the election of Jose Emmanuel Eala, as executive director; Victorico Vargas, vice chairman; and Marievic Anonuevo as secretary of BAP-SBP. The controversy stemmed from a June 12, 2008 election initiated by the SBP faction where the camp of Pangilinan and Moreno was elected to hold BAP-SBP’s top posts.

But Jay it looks MVP's personal presence would be needed more at Salim's HQ in HK in order to counter whatever the politicians at Mainland China are working on, due to the territorial dispute with the Philippines they used their influence at FIBA-Asia so it is not far fetched they'll do something also to MVP's business at HK. Remember these guys do learn a lot from the Philippines, there's such a thing as "Sequestration due to National Security". Hmmm, what a coincidence when we just had the Martial Law Declaration anniversary.

it looks he'll be out of ABAP giving way to Manny Lopez return. Sorry Ed Picson thank you for the efforts but its not enough.

You can smell the deep connections in Mainland China of a certain someone is trying to exact revenge for their Business Associate.

How about Hans Sy. Or Joey Concepcion. We know they do have love for basketball. Its sad that neither of the Ayala brothers have the same basketball passion as Don Jaime same goes with Lance Gokongwei. I do not think Bong Tan will fit the role.

Owners of Welcoat and Buddy Encarnado are genuine basketball people but they are not in the same level as MVP and RSA.

Hey Boss Danding just announced at Bacolod for his and NPC's support to PNoy and his election candidates.

Could already see the setting-up of the fences.

IBN posters version of High-Low

Extremely high during the run-up to tournaments and during the early stages; very low during the latter stages especially the last two games.

IBN poster advisory
gloaters for RP victories welcome during early stages; barred during the latter stages especially the last two games. during the last two games and after, bashers are most welcome.

I posted a legit question a while back, "How do we stop Iran with Haddadi, Bahrami, Kardoust, Khamrany etc..."

I'm answering my post: McGee, Standhardinger, Fajardo, Aguilar, Parks, Pringle, Lassiter etc. in short, we come up againts their REAL team team with our fantasy team!!! I are genius!!!

Iran is scarier than China. Not an expert or a watcher but I think team China detests physical contact. They will forever be stuck with the tag, methodical. They're just tall.
