Philippines Senior National Team Thread Vol. V

Difference is, Blatche operated from the perimeter. Chot runs his offense through the perimeter.

Right now, though, our strong point is our low-post bigs. Chot will have to play through the post so that he can run it through Kai.

not disrespecting him, but i once asked myself, "at what point did you realize you'd had enough of coach chot?" the answer was clear as daylight: when the AU-PH brawl happened. :D

I know it was to protect a teammate and show that we weren't backing down, but it wasn't exactly a smart move on our part to engage in that fight. That led to the ejection and eventual suspension of most of the lineup and coaching staff.

^^ Castro's and Blatche's response are understandable. What's not excusable is how the bench reacted. Imbes na awatin, nakisawsaw pa

If Chot will again coach Gilas in the future.. I think he will use Kai just like he did with Blatche.. Chot gives Blatche all he wants that time.. Maybe he will do the same for Kai.. while Baltazar or Tamayo will be his RDO.. Edu and Kouame will be his taller Pingris or better version of Japeth...

Sorry to disagree with you bro, but Blatche & Kai don't have the same skill-set & playing style. Blatche is your modern day big man, actually more of a "four" rather than a center. Blatche isn't your back-to-the-basket/post-up player but is a face-up type of a player who is more comfortable operating from the wing or perimeter. Blatche' money move is his barreling drives complimented with a decent 3-pt. shooting. Kai on the other hand despite having an outside shot & decent dribbling for his size is more of the traditional post-up or back-to-the-basket type of a center. Kai may turn-out to possess pretty decent handles for a center his height, but I don't expect Kai's handles would reach the level of Dray Blatche. And Kai doesn't need to reach that level of ball handling skills.

So with this difference in playing style & skill-set, if ever coach Chot will once again coach Gilas, I don't think he's going to use/utilize Kai like he used/utilized Dray Blatche.

TBH I want to see what Kai can do at the Asian level first. It's been a while since we last saw him play in a competitive game we don’t know what his level is at the moment. Maybe he could be the next Blatche.. or Porzingis. But I hope we give others a chance before we get Chot again

We already move on from this.. At this point after 2023, Tab will be gone for good (Except if we will qualify for Olympics, He will extend for 1 year).. He might be retire from coaching and I don't think Al Panlilio will try to hire another foreign coach, especially that BCAP always opposed the hiring of foreign coaches.. My first choice will be Jong Uichico.. because he's no.1 coaching disciple of Tab.. Then the 2nd one is Chot already, Because he's the best local coach internationally... We should pray Jong will take over the coaching shores and continue what Tab starts.. He should accept that...

As per the latest podcast involving Tab, he said he's not going anywhere as the older he gets, the harder it is to find another job.

If Gilas performs satisfactorily, they'll probably keep Tab. If not, it now will depend if MVP will stick him to Ateneo

The SBP has the tendency to think short term. Just because the goal was not achieved, they overlook the improvements of the program and switch back to "last minute hugot from the PBA". This is what they did with Gilas 1. Instead of continuing the program, they let go of Toroman.

It will take about a decade to reach elite level. Iran took about a decade to be an Asian powerhouse.

Hopefully, Indonesia sticks with Toroman regardless of outcome if they want to be a contender in the Asian scene

Letting go of toroman is the plan all along.. it produced a jones cup championship in q012 and fiba world return by a runner up finish in 2013.. peak year of Gilas ika nga..

Did toroman lasted more than 3 years in iran? no, Did Tab last more than 3 years in Jordan also no..The success of the program is when after 2 or 3 years you make your nt competitive, anything beyond that is what I say.. "overstaying or I said no choice since no one better is capable" just like what Brett Brown was in Boomers and Tab Baldwin was with Tall Blacks after that great 2002 run..lelevel up dapat yun program and for Indonesia is for someone to be able to get the transfer of technology from Toroman..yun ang magiging lasting legacy ni Torman sa Indonesia pag nagkataon

That's why possibly Jong Uichico comeback w/ National team coach is possible because aside from being Tab disciple eh BCAP will not get mad because Uichico is also had good relationship w/ BCAP.. SBP also playing politics w/ BCAP and from the SMC camp..

The long term solution to the BCAP’s bullshit is to have more of Tab’s disciples.

Technology transfer as others put it.

Arespacochaga should take over. Uichico is a disciple of Ron Jacobs. Coach Sandy should have absorbed the most knowledge from Tab.Or Tab should get another young coach interested in blazing his own trail.

Young coach blazing his own trail ba kamo? whom Tab was also impressed with? that he was so competitive and focused, he violated the ECQ protocol, because i think, to his mind, he has a way to wrest the championship from Ateneo?? Yeah!! You guessed it right! Its Coach Ayo!! hehehe

Maybe you should be telling that to Japan basketball whose national team head coach Julio Llamas has been handling the Japs since 2017.

And speaking of Japanese basketball, Llamas' early stint with the Japan national team did not produce instant result as Japan struggled in the 2017 FIBA Asia Cup. Then in the 1st & 2nd windows of the 2019 FIBA World Cup qualifiers, Japan sufferred one loss after another as it was beaten by Gilas twice & Taiwan & Australia once each. Japan was on the verge of being eliminated when it made a huge huge turnaround in the 3rd window by beating Taiwan via rout & scoring a big upset against mighty Australia. Japan then swept all its games in the 4th, 5th & 6th window beating teams Iran, Kazakhstan & Qatar to finish strong in its campaign going into the World Cup. Of course, Japan's turnaround could be attributed mainly to the enlistment of Rui Hachimura & Yuta Watanabe to the Jap senior national team, but my point is, the Japs stuck it with coach Llamas even if in his initial stint, the Japs struggled. That's patience & perseverance for you. One could sense that Llamas is going to stay at the Jap nat'l team bench for at least 2 more years.

Kasi kung sa Pinoy basketball yan, the head coach sucks in one or two tournaments, kahit bago palang sya, he will surely get fired.

I have been away for months lol. I am starting to like how Tab is shaping the Gilas program. Similar to how NZ is ran. Their core plays for NZ Breakers in NBL while other standouts are overseas Adams(NBA), Fotu(Italy), Tai(Turkey), Corey(China/Italy), Wetzell(Germany) and a bunch of their young guys are playing in NCAA or developmental players in NBL.

I could see Gilas doing something similar. Since Clarkson(NBA), Thirdy(Japan), Edu(NCAA), Kai(USA), Kobe(USA/NBL) are all overseas based for now. Are the rumors about Kiefer and Parks going overseas true as well? Then the young gilas core could probably join PBA as a guest team and be a regular team in ABL.

The Parks rumor, not so sure, since the PBA still has his rights. Kobe, however, looks like he wants to be good enough to play abroad, given that he's training with EWP.

I wanna see Jong coaching in the next Asian Games with Clarkson plus this boys and if he wins the gold, that would be the biggest coaching comeback in the National Team.

The Asian Games might be traumatic for Jong becauase of 2002, esp if facing Korea. Lol

How about every one's favorite interior designer? Is he interested in becoming Tab's deciple?

Maybe. The interior designer is also under Rajko Toroman's coaching tree. He welcomes innovation. He is the antithesis of the BCAP. I think the chance of him to follow Tab is high.
