SBP deplores FIBA probe, to snub meeting set by world body

MANILA, Philippines – The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) deplored the meeting being sought out by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) next month in Geneva to resolve what the world basketball body referred to as “the ongoing basketball controversy" in the country.
The association headed by Manny Pangilinan made it clear that it would not be attending the July 20-22 event since as far as it is concerned, it has not done anything wrong that merited a new round of discussion with FIBA.
Owing to correspondences and complaints coming from the Basketball Association of the Philippines (BAP), the FIBA Central Board in its last meeting decided to create a special committee to specifically look at the matter. The BAP is the group that the SBP replaced as the FIBA-recognized National Sports Association for basketball in the country.
Pangilinan said the SBP already wrote a letter to FIBA secretary-general Patrick Baumann asking him to specifically outline what those complaints are. Unfortunately, the association claimed it received no reply from the influential FIBA official other than the three-day meeting it scheduled a month from now.
“We can’t go there unprepared," Pangilinan said Wednesday in a morning press conference at the PLDT offices.
“What are the rules of court? What are the rules and procedures? Yan ang gusto naming malaman. How will you judge us? How will you judge them (BAP)? Mahirap `yung ganun," the SBP president added.
SBP vice-president Ricky Vargas was more direct to the point.
“Will we attend the July meeting with FIBA? Ang tingin ko doon insulto yun kung aatend kami. A-attend ka pero hindi naman sinasabi kung ano ang kasalanan mo."
The special committee is composed of FIBA secretary general emeritus Borislav Stankovic as chairman, FIBA honorary president Carl Men Ky Ching and Dr. Ken Madsen, a member of the FIBA legal commission.
The SBP said it can’t hold talks with a committee that is composed of people who has known to have special affiliations with a key personality over at the BAP camp, its controversial secretary-general Graham Lim.
“Nakita ninyo `yung composition nito, sila sila rin `yun," Vargas said.
Pangilinan and the rest of the SBP officials present during the press con that includes executive director Noli Eala, PBA chairman Joaqui Trillo, PBL chairman Mikee Romero and SBP legal counsel Marivic Anonuevo are all concerned about the possible suspension to be meted by FIBA in the light of the group’s impending action.
A FIBA suspension on the Philippines meant the possibility of the Powerade Team Pilipinas not competing in the coming 25th FIBA-Asia men’s championship in Tianjin, China.
“I think it would extremely be unfair to the country if they would suspend us before the China meet," Eala said.
The Philippines has been suspended twice before by the FIBA due to leadership squabble, the last time in 2005 which prevented the country from holding a basketball competition in the Southeast Asian Games that it hosted.
