Biantan: Davao Aguilas Want Amani to be a Hero

Sunday, January 07, 2018 By JACK L. BIANTAN BIG JACK

THE Davao Aguilas want Amani Aguinaldo to be their local hero but with the Azkals center back about to sign for Ceres-Negros, he could become a local hero in Davao some other time.

If he puts his signature for Ceres today then he has to fulfill his heroisms in Bacolod where opportunities to display his heroic acts will be plenty. Aside from playing for the Philippine Football League, the club from Bacolod has qualified for the AFC Champions League elimination round where it will debut against Burmese club Shan United FC in the first round.

No question, Amani is right now the best center back in the country today that of course if he will be fit in time for the PFL and the AFC Champions League.

It is a big gamble for Ceres to sign him as he is still recuperating from an injured knee. However, according to a source in the Ceres camp, the club has assured Amani top notch medical care for him to have speedy recovery so that he could be back on the pitch as early as March or even earlier.

But why do the Aguilas want him knowing that his knee is still a suspect? Aguilas owner Jeff Cheng said they want to develop Amani as a local hero. Davao, despite of its disappointing season last year, is a big club with big ambition. Amani is from Davao and he has a big following in Davao.

Davao has signed Fil-Australian Josh Grommen, another center back who ironically played for Ceres last season. It could have been a great paring for the two young defenders in the Aguilas backline.

Kaya Mentor Noel Marcaida Shares Delight in Move to Iloilo

To say that the Philippines Football League has had a tumultuous off-season is an understatement.

Two clubs have ceased operations; players have transferred between local and foreign clubs, and now one of Philippine football’s historical clubs has a new home.

In an Instagram post, Kaya Football Club has announced its transfer from Makati to Iloilo for the upcoming season of the country’s professional football league.

“It’s a new challenge but we’re excited to play our home game in Iloilo as everyone knows it’s the football hotbed of the country historically,” shared head coach Noel Marcaida.

“It’s an honor being a coach of Kaya FC to represent Iloilo in the second PFL season.”

Kaya will now be the third PFL team to play in the Visayas after Ceres-Negros and Global Cebu. As Iloilo’s new club, Marcaida looks forward to clashes with Negros’ Ceres.

“Looking forward for the Visayas Clasico and [it’s] surely one of the reasons why the second PFL season is going to be exciting,” he shared.

PFL 2nd Season Returns on March 3

By Ivan Stewart Saldajeno, Philippine News Agency on February 1, 2018

SANTA. ROSA, Laguna — The Philippine Football League (PFL) will make a comeback on March 3, nearly two months earlier than the opening of the previous season.

Following a meeting at the PFF office in Pasig, where the league office is also located, the PFL board agreed that the second season of the home-and-away professional football league will start on the said date.

Following the dissolution of Meralco Manila and the decision of Ilocos United to take a leave of absence for this year, the remaining six charter member clubs of the league, JPV Marikina, Kaya Makati, Stallion Laguna, defending champion Ceres Negros, Global Cebu, and Davao Aguilas, will play this season.

The PFL season will remain a quadruple round robin format divided into two rounds of home and road games with a two-legged semifinals and a one-game final.

Key Signings Boost Global-Cebu Roster

By: Cedelf P. Tupas - Reporter / @cedelfptINQ
Philippine Daily Inquirer / 05:30 AM February 01, 2018

With a slew of talented new signings, Global Cebu looks poised to mount a serious challenge in both the Philippines Football League and in the AFC Cup starting Feb. 10.

The Cebu-based side acquired former Meralco Manila players Lee Jeong-min, a defender from Korea, Curt Dizon, Daniel Gadia and Jinggoy Valmayor and Ilocos United striker Chima Uzoka as it looks to fill the void left by captain Misagh Bahadoran, who signed a lucrative deal with Perak in the Malaysian Super League.

The excitement is palpable within the Global side as the club also welcomed a new owner in Alvin Carranza, who takes over from Dan Palami, who has opted to focus on his duties as chair of the national teams’ committee of the Philippine Football Federation.

Carranza, a long time supporter of grassroots football as managing director of the Teen Azkals Foundation, Inc., has elevated Marjo Allado back as head coach, after Akbar Nawas handled the team in the second half of the season last year.

PFL, Sportradar Sign Deal for Online Broadcast Platform

Published 19 hours ago on February 22, 2018

A new chapter awaits the Philippines Football League

Aside from the 2018 season that will commence on March 3, the League has signed an agreement with international sports data and digital content company Sportradar to enlist its match-fixing prevention and webcasting services.

The contract between the PFL and Sportradar was signed and presented to the media and various football stakeholders in a press conference at the Marco Polo Hotel in Ortigas this Thursday morning.

“It is a boost in the arm for the PFL because Sportradar believes in the viability of the league and they are bringing in not only money to the league but also prestige to the league,” expressed a pleased Philippine Football President Nonong Araneta.

Sportradar’s Over-The-Top service will allow the PFL to broadcast its games to Filipino football fans in the Philippines and abroad. There will be 75 games on show for the upcoming season, and all fixtures will be shown via the utility.

“With our technology, basically the fans will be able to view the livestream with very good quality, without buffering and no letterings. The streams will be very seamless,” promised Sportradar’s Director of Media Rights for Asia Pacific Dylan Chuan.

“If you have a low connection, then you’ll have low quality (viewing) but the stream will be seamless. If you have a better connection, then the stream will have a better quality but there will be no problem with it when it comes to the streams.”

The Match Highlights of the game between the Davao Aguilas FC and the Kaya-Iloilo FC.

One thing you will notice is the poor camaraderie of the Davao Aguilas FC squad. Whenever a Kaya player scores a goal, everybody gets involved and congratulates the scorer as a team.

But with Davao, each time when James Younghusband scored, very few of his teammates went in and congratulated him.

The coaching staff needs to do something about the team's camaraderie and spirit, especially when they have trouble winning at home even after all the money that San Miguel is pouring into them and all the support they are getting from their fans.

In a sport that is not really pulling in a lot of spectators, they still insist on bureaucracy like this? It is so frustrating to see.

Football is still very much a struggling sport in the country, so they have to adjust the reality of the situation rather than impose standards by countries where the sport is much more popular and profitable.

27 APR ADVISORY: M15 JPV MARIKINA FC VS CERES NEGROS FC

We would like to advise the football stakeholders that the match between JPV Marikina FC and Ceres Negros FC will be played in a closed stadium at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium on 28 April 2018, 4 p.m.

JPV Marikina FC was not able to mobilize adequate security personnel for the match and hence requested for the match to be played without spectators.

Younghusbands Shine as Davao Aguilas Dominate Global Cebu

Earl Averilla

Davao Aguilas’ ascendancy in the Philippines Football League continued after cruising to a comfortable win over Global Cebu.

Phil Younghusband’s penalty followed by a brace from brother James gave a boost for Marlon Maro’s men ahead of their mouth-watering clash against Ceres Negros.

Global Cebu threatened early in the game as Rufo Sanchez headed on target off a corner kick in the third minute but O’Donnell was alert enough to parry the stinging shot away.

Two minutes later, James Younghusband replied with a headed effort that opposing keeper Patrick Deyto was able to gather, but it did not matter as flag was raised for offside.

Davao had a chance once again as a freekick was awarded near the 10th minute, with Phil Younghusband’s shot saved by Deyto.

The Mindanao-based club started to build momentum with a couple of corner kicks but failed to convert.

But Coach Marlon Maro’s men were soon rewarded with their efforts as referee called for a spot kick due to an infraction in the box by Global’s Wesley Dos Santos to a tenacious Tyler Matas.

The ensuing kick was coolly converted by Phil Younghusband as Davao Aguilas got the crucial first goal in the 17th minute.

Three minutes after the Cebu-based squad were given a chance to level things up when they were rewarded a free-kick from a very promising area, but Rufo Sanchez’s well-executed strike was matched by an equally good reaction from Davao keeper Nick O’Donnell to push it over the bar.

In the 28th minute, Roberts seemed to be fouled by Otomo in side the box but there was no call.

Global players were up in arms for a while but the decision stayed.

A few minutes after the half-hour mark, saw a moment of pretty end-to-end stuff with Phil Younghusband squandering a chance in from a tight angle as his attempt was nowhere near the target.

RE: Global Cebu FC's Financial Problems

Kaya-Iloilo FC has had to cancel what would have been their first home match in Iloilo because Global Cebu FC has been unable to travel there for the match.

There had been clues about Global's financial problems as early as last year when there reportedly were months worth of delays in the payment of the salaries of the players.

Global's Dan Palami himself has hinted about leaving the position of Manager of the Philippine Azkals on what seemed like financial issues.

The Global Cebu FC team itself lost by three goals a couple of days ago to the Davao Aguilas FC team which I thought was a little strange since Global had a pretty good lineup.

But again, a clue perhaps was when Global Cebu FC was unable to play at their Home Pitch these last couple of games which I thought was due to scheduling issues with their home pitch, but could be a sign of their financial problems also.

It is quite embarrassing IMHO for the team to be having such problems, it seems the team (and the league itself) is having a slow death.

Very sad to see this, I am still hoping that if Global can't be saved, then hopefully the league will somehow soldier on thru.

RE: Will this be the Last Season of the PFL?

With Global Cebu FC likely on the verge of folding up, if not sooner then a little later, then I think that the prospects of the Philippines Football League (PFL) surviving beyond this season is highly unlikely.

However, even if the league does fold up, I don't think it will necessarily mean the end of Commercial Football Leagues in the Philippines. What will likely happen is that a new Metro Manila based league will take its place, but with much smaller budgets.

Smaller budgets means smaller salaries, which in turn will lead to less competitive players in the league. If that happens, then Philippine Football will suffer in general in terms of quality simply because we won't be able to attract as many Fil-Foreigners to be based in the country.

Lower quality imports (if they will even be allowed) will abound, and we will lose much of the local talent to more stable and longer lasting jobs in the Private and Public sector.

Philippine Football won't likely go down back to zero or even to pre-2010 levels, but it will go down to a level which the Philippine Football community will be able to support it, which I think is much lower than what we have now the PFL.

Global Cebu FC reportedly released a statement indicating "financial problems" as the reason on why they couldn't travel to Iloilo for what would have been Kaya Iloilo FC's first home game. Here is the link to that report: https://www.facebook.com/PanayNews/posts/1565610206842091

In that case, 'e di magsara na lang siguro sila kesa naman ganyang nagkakalat sila sa liga' (they should just close their operations rather then keep embarrassing themselves). I feel sorry for Global Cebu FC, but at he same time I also feel pi@%ed in anticipation for this match.

Just close shop, Global, if you really can't finance the team properly anymore.
