Jeff Morial scored the go-ahead lay-up, then came up a crucial steal in the waning moments of the match to tow the Pharex Bidang Generix to a 79-74 upset win over the favored North Luzon Expressway Road Warriors in the PBA D-League Tuesday at the Far Eastern University gym.

Morial finished with 16 points, nine rebounds, and two assists in a solid all-around game.

The former College of Saint Benilde standout made a fastbreak lay-up with 1:51 to go, giving the Bidang Generix the lead, 73-72. Morial capped his heroics with a steal off Calvin Abueva that led to an Edwin Asoro basket.

"We were very fortunate that the bounces and the rebounds went our way," said Pharex coach Carlo Tan. "We were able to attack because the breaks went our way."

Tan also credited Morial for his work ethic.

"He puts extra effort in practice and during weekends. He works with a strength and conditioning coach. He played much better (against NLEX) compared to our first game," said Tan.

After NLEX found itself trailing at the half, 32-37, the Road Warriors elevated their game a notch higher, with Eric Salamat leading the charge. The former Ateneo stalwart’s triple gave the Road Warriors the lead, 43-42, and his team held on to a 60-59 edge at the end of the third quarter.

Both teams would exchange leads, with Clifford Hodge knocking in a short jumper, 72-71, to give NLEX the lead again with 2:43 left in the game.

But that was the last time the Road Warriors tasted the lead, as the do-it-all Morial and Bidang Generix stepped up from there.

JR Tecson had 11 points, Jason Deutchman contributed 10 points, 11 rebounds and two steals, and Asoro chipped in nine points and four blocks for the Bidang Generix.

Abueva had 17 points and 14 rebounds while Salamat had 12 points for NLEX.

In the first game, Maynilad blitzed to a 24-9 lead and never looked back in easily defeating Max! Bond Super Glue, 82-61.

Garvo Lanete had 22 points while Sudan Daniel had 19 markers, seven rebounds and four blocks as the Water Dragons recovered from their 78-70 loss to Cobra Energy Drink in the league opener last March 12 with an emphatic victory over Max!

"Naninibago pa 'yung mga bata pero as we go along, they will peak eventually," said Maynilad coach Frankie Lim.

The Sumos cut the deficit to 10 points at the half, 45-35, on former FEU stalwart Reil Cervantes' second-quarter effort, but the Water Dragons pulled away in the third and even led by as high as 24 points at 68-44. - KY, RCJ, Reuben Terrado, GMA News

Powerade Fil-Ams playing much better today. So far it's a close game between Jr. Powerade and Cobra Energy.

Lol Mico Halili saying a catchy complement to Paul Lee that make me laugh out loud but saying how paul lee play "hindi niya pinahiya si Mico":D:D

Cobra Energy Drink used a huge third-quarter scoring run in posting an 86-73 win over Junior Powerade in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) D-League Foundation Cup at The Arena in San Juan City.

Cobra's 1-2 guard combo of Paul Lee and Kokoy Hermosisima led a 25-2 blitz at the start of the third as the Ironmen took a commanding 63-38 advantage. The win was the second straight for the Ironmen, who grabbed the solo lead in Group B.

The Ironmen actually had a slow start and were only up by two points, 38-36, at the turn.

Lee finished with 22 points behind 7-of-14 shooting to go with his eight rebounds, four steals and three assists, while Hermosisima tallied 20 points, shooting 4-of-7 from the three-point range.

Ken Acibar had 18 markers and pulled down 11 rebounds, while John Foronda only scored four points but grabbed 11 boards.

"For me, he (Lee) had a bad start and played his C-game, but I tried to involve other players, too. Kokoy showed what he can do as well as Acibar. That's what we are working on, our team effort," said Cobra coach Lawrence Chongson.

Cobra will next face Max! Bond Super Glue on April 14 after using the two-week break for a team-building session in Baguio City.

In the first game, Gio Ciriacruz made four free throws down the stretch to lift Blackwater to a 72-69 win over RnW Pacific Pipes.

Ciriacruz, who played under Arellano coach Leo Isac for five seasons, finished with nine points, 12 rebounds and five assists.

Isaac said that he relied on his current and former players from Arellano and Mapua in the waning moments. "Sa ganitong end game, talagang kailangan ng ulo (brain) sa ganitong sitwasyon."

RnW Pacific Pipes led at 59-55 but Joshua Saret hit a three and Ian Celada hit one of two free throws to tie the game. Celada and Leynes exchanged triples to make it 68-all before Ciriacruz' crucial charities.

Ciriacruz broke a 68-all deadlock in the 43.6-second mark with two free throws for a 70-72 count.

After ex-St. Francis of Assisi guard Rex Leynes made only one-of-two from the line for RnW, Ciriacruz made two more charities to extend the lead to three, 72-69.

Leynes threw a running three-pointer that went in but the referees nullified the basket as he stepped on the sideline before releasing the shot.

Blackwater won their first game after dropping their opening assignment against Pharex, 90-100, on March 17.

"Malaking bagay para sa isang grupo na kailan lang binuo (ang panalo). Mare--realize nila na kaya pala namin manalo against the best aspiring players sa D-League," Isaac said.

Saret led Blackwater's scorers with 13 points while Vergel Zulueta had 12 points. Celada and Rocky Acidre netted 11 markers. - Reuben Terrado, JVP, KY

Hey bro if you are wearing those Dreadlocks or Braids as your "Do", you'll have a hardtime hooking-up with local teams here. I remember Gabe Norwood, Chris Ross, Joe DeVance and Alex Cabagnot having their "do" conservatively for sometime before they were able to wear what they have today. Its just the way the culture is here, there's a certain look which say you're a 'basketball player', if what's shown in the video is still your hair, you'll have a hard time.

From what I can recall, only 2 players were able to get-away with their outrageous hairdos when they were starting out and they were Asi Taulava and Mark Caguiao but they have that 'persona' that made them close to the fans.

And do bulk-up as you're a bit skinny for a 5'10 guy plus with the coming of bigger guards you might just get pushed around. And you better be a hell of a shooter aside from being a great passer to succeed over here.

But you're quick ..... A nice monicker for you is "Nick the Quick".

Good Luck to you.

The NCAA connection was able to beat Adamson on their own home floor. Nice win for Richard Del Rosario.

The Rudy Lingganay we saw in the ABL finally played his game leading Max Bond over Cafe France.

Rudy Lingganay, who played for the KL Dragons in the recent ASEAN Basketball League season, scored 23 points to go with his six assists and four rebounds to lead the Sumos.

The scores:

MAX BOND 83—Lingganay 23, Cervantes 16, Hugnatan 10, Cabatu 10, Afuang 9, Bautista 6, Benitez 5, Navarro 2, Cuan 2, Amparado 0, Fortuna 0.
CAFE FRANCE 62—Lobaton 15, Bulangis 10, Almario 9, Babad 9, Mabayo 4, Rublico 3, Magbitang, Banas 3, Mejos 2, Delfinado 2, Ponferrada 2, Gallardo 0, Graebel 0.

Quarters: 21-13, 42-35, 62-47, 83-62

Second Game

i won't be surprised if Gerald Anderson will suit up for NLEX Road Warriors. you know... lol

i hate to say this but for me, PBA-D League is quite boring.

I wonder if the PBA D-League is making money .....

Hows the gate-receipts ???? Are there many commercial ads in the TV Coverage in IBC 13.

This endeavor must succeed if we really want the Development of Philippine Basketball to continue .....

not until gerald anderson comes in

wait till you see Vice Ganda in action.

images

heard he was a darn good varsity player before he "gone out".

images

ABS-CBN would surely use this as one of their gimiks then play-up more on the rumors about the relationship of Vice Ganda and Paolo Hubalde.

It's free admission. I think the league is using (or mostly using) the entry fees of teams for their expenses. As for television, there's no commercial ads during TV coverage.

Veteran-led teams FCA and RNW Pacific Pipes fall to younger, more firepower teams Cebuana and NLEX.

Both FCA and RNW are decent teams but they lack talented scorers and go-to guys. Cebuana and NLEX both have very deep benches with players who can start on teams like Jr. Powerade and Cafe France. They also have a lot of individually talented players.

My Top 2 for Group A: Pharex and NLEX

My Top 2 for Group B: Still too early to tell

Cebuana Lhuillier went on a big tear in the third quarter to trounce FCA, 80-58, on Thursday at the San Juan gym in San Juan City, thus joining erstwhile Group B leader Cobra in the tally board of the Philippine Basketball Association Developmental League (PBA D-League) Foundation Cup.

The Gems and the Ironmen are now tied on top of the Group B standings with 2-0 records.

After a sluggish first half that ended with the Cultivators enjoying a 34-32 edge, the Gems used a big 21-4 blitz to erect a 58-47 lead at the end of the third period.

The lead ballooned in the fourth when the Cultivators only scored six points in the final two minutes of the match.

"FCA was solid on defense and we only had three assists in the first half, but we were able to execute better and got to establish our post game," said Cebuana coach Luigi Trillo.

Allein Maliksi, who played limited time for the Philippine Patriots in the 2nd ASEAN Basketball League, was pivotal in Cebu's third-quarter scoring splurge to finish with 20 points and 11 rebounds.

Maliksi also got help from fellow ex-Patriot Benedict Fernandez and Ariel Mepana, who tallied 11 markers each, while Ariel Mepana scored 10 points.

"It was not only one guy that contributed for us, as everybody really tried to contribute," said Trillo.

The Cultivators dropped to 1-1, joining Max! Bond and Maynilad in the middle of the pack in Group B.

Cebuana's Hyram Bagatsing got bloodied when he sustained an ugly gash in his right forehead from an inadvertent elbow by Gilbert Bulawan in the fourth quarter.

In the first game, Ronald Pascual sizzled from three-point country as North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) cruised to an 87-72 victory against RnW Pacific Pipes.

Pascual led the Road Warriors with 25 points and nine rebounds, shooting 5-of-9 from beyond the arc to squelch RnW's bid for a fight-back.

The Road Warriors bounced back from their 74-79 loss to the Pharex Bidang Generix on March 22.

"I challenged them that the team's character will depend on how we come back after our loss to Pharex," said NLEX coach Boyet Fernandez.

Calvin Abueva had 12 points and seven rebounds, while Christopher Ellis had 10 points for the Road Warriors, who climbed to solo second place in Group A ( 2-1). - Reuben Terrado, JVP, KY, GMA News
