I doubt it really, Byron. Let's just say that the P900M initial bid for the PBA was an amount that ABS-CBN couldn't afford. Studio 23 isn't exactly making money while ABS-CBN Channel 2 is practically the only remaining business that's earning for the Lopez Group. They spend P900M for the coverage, there's no guarantee for them that they can recoup this.

On the other hand, MVP's interest in acquiring Channel 13 is already well-publicized. For Channel 13 to gain initial impetus to kickstart their broadcast campaign focused into sports, the crown jewel would obviously be the PBA coverage. Hence, if MVP doesn't get the PBA coverage, he won't exactly expect the network to do well sales-wise. Neither will it get the publicity that the network would need to generate viewers. The PBA would be a plus for them even if they don't make money out of it because it would help the network attract the viewers - sports lovers who would want to make Channel 13 as a staple for their sports-viewing pleasure. It's a win-win situation for MVP, regardless of how the PBA does well in terms of generating advertisers.

Well I am coming from one of the Lopez' group of co. And to tell you honestly, they made very good deals selling majority shares in major companies such as NLEX, Meralco, Etc. They invested in something bigger and more profitable businesses. Anyway, one point really. They know how to deal.

PBA is bad advertising business. The sponsors are but limited to those member teams and sister companies. So big companies now that rivals Coca Cola, Powerade, SMB, Ginebra, Purefoods, BMEG, Air 21, Alaska, Barako Bull, Meralco, TNT, Maynilad, PLDT, Smart, Magnolia, and other of its smaller subsidiaries (most of which do not even sponsor commercials for the PBA) such as Shell, Phoenix, Globe, Tanduay, Beer na Beer, Colt 45, LBC, Cobra, Pepsi, Selecta, Lipovitan, Bayantel or even Lactum, Sustagen, are prohibited to do so.

Its very evident these past years. Attendance, yes its good, but ratings? commercial sponsorship? Studio 23 just placed teasers of their movies and shows in between coverage to fill in the gaps.

That's why i'm saying, its either there was a payoff to give way (i know this happens, i just know) or abs knows its a bad investment and will just wait for the PBA to knock on their doors again after being short changed by their TV coveror, at their price at that.

for me it was a great investment. coz im seeing the next golden age of the PBA coming in the next few years regardless of how well will the Smart Gilas will do in the FIBA qualifiers.

with the JDV trade, its not farfetched for De Vance to end up with Smart Gilas then ???? if that happens then MVP definitely wants Smart Gilas to go down fighting even if they lose...... with Williams, Taulava, De Vance, Douhit as the Bigboys then Hontiveros bolstering Lassiter/Lutz, and Alapag bolstering Casio, we have a stronger Gilas animal for its last hurrah.

Toroman bares Gilas wish list
By Joaquin Henson, The Philippine Star
Posted at 03/01/2011

MANILA, Philippines - Smart-Gilas coach Rajko Toroman disclosed the other day his wish list of 10 candidate PBA players to reinforce the national basketball team vying for a ticket to the 2012 London Olympics at the FIBA-Asia Championships in Wuhan, China, on Sept. 15-25.

Toroman named Meralco’s Asi Taulava, Talk ‘N’ Text’s Jimmy Alapag, Kelly Williams, Ryan Reyes and Ranidel de Ocampo, San Miguel Beer’s Arwind Santos and Jay Washington, B-Meg’s James Yap and Alaska’s Sonny Thoss and Joe DeVance in his 10-man wish list.

Toroman said of the 10, only five will be picked for the national squad..............................................

I don't think the commissioner will let this trade proposal go.
In terms of talent and marketability, Devance is obviously superior to either Salvador or Canaleta.
So for sure, Comm. Salud will ask for a revision should this proposal
be submitted to his office.

Trade rumors swirl around Bolts, Kings, and Painters
BY NOLI CORTEZ

MERALCO is again in the center of trade rumors, but coach Ryan Gregorio stressed the offer must be one he cannot refuse for the Bolts to take part in any deal.

"Kailangan lamang kami," Gregorio said yesterday. "Kung quits-quits lang, then there’s no reason for us to trade."

Gregorio issued this statement amidst talks that Meralco, Ginebra and Rain or Shine are brewing a trade in time for the season-ending Governors Cup that starts on June 11.

Contacted yesterday, Commissioner Chito Salud, whose stamp of approval must be affixed before any trade is realized, said his office has yet to receive any document relating to such a deal.

Ginebra coach Jong Uichico and Rain or Shine’s co-owners Terry Que and Raymund Yu also denied it, but the rumors persist.

Under the supposed trade scenario, Bolts forward Gabby Espinas goes to the Kings along with the Elasto Painters’ Larry Rodriguez. In turn, the Kings give up Willie Miller to ROS and JC Intal to Meralco while the Bolts also get Doug Kramer from ROS. The Painters will also get Meralco’s first round pick in 2013.

"Not true," said Gregorio, also the giant utility company’s chief of basketball operations.

"I have not thought about that equation and the mere fact it means letting go of Espinas stops it on my end," he added.

Gregorio insisted Espinas is one of the cornerstones of his team, along with Mark Cardona, Sol Mercado and Reynel Hugnatan, the latter two being acquired in a trade just before the mid-season Commissioner’s Cup.

"That’s why I’m trying to get players who can solidify and benefit my roster for the longer duration," he said.

Gnawing at Gregorio is the recent anterior cruciate ligament tear that starting point guard Chris Ross suffered during a recent friendly with Rain or Shine.

The Bolts are already without starting center Asi Taulava, who is on loan to the Smart-Gilas national team.

"My roster landscape changed with two of my starters out," admitted Gregorio.

Free agent playmaker Chris Timberlake is currently trying out and Gregorio said he has a "good shot" of making the team.

Still, Gregorio is not discounting the possibility of a trade, but pointed out it has to be "really, really convincing" for him to push through with it.

"Nobody in my team is untouchable, but any trade we do must be one that can change the course of our campaign. Otherwise, stay muna ako."

With forward-center Rico Villanueva still recuperating from an ACL surgery, the Kings are hard-pressed to fill the slack in their frontline after do-it-all forward Rudy Hatfield opted to return to United States to attend to family matters.

JDV to Meralco.. ;) i more agree with this.. since ryan wants lamang in trade, they need to get JDV.

So why do you think the JDV to Jay-R Reyes + 2 second round picks approved by the comm then??

Plus having enough playing mins. both Salvador and KG are good players that can be a cornerstones in every team!

And in return, who will you think Meralco will release which is acceptable to the commissioner?

the trio of Ross, Omolon and Espinas and or Ren Ren.

Ross is a promising young PG, while Espinas is one of the most efficient contributors in the league, same with Omolon and Ren Ren is just the sweetener. and if he still doesnt want them. Meralco should break the terrible back court tandem of Cardona and Mercado(sorry RG youre no Spoelstra)

Because Comm. Salud thinks JDV has an edge over Reyes. So a one on one trade will not be fair. Therefore adding a 2 second rounders will offset the advantage of JDV ( according to the commissioner).

But for Salvador and KG, I don't see either of them in the level of the talent and marketability of JDV. JDV is on his peak of being a star while both Salvador and KG are merely role players and already hounded various injuries.

So the way I see it and in my opinion, the commisioner will still ask for a revision as soon as the trade proposal will reach his office.

If ever, they'll add another 2nd round picks...AGAIN!

No argument they got a good deal in the selling of NLEX, Meralco, Maynilad et al to the Metro Pacific Group. MVP was willing to shell out good money to the Lopezes for majority control over these companies, and the Lopezes were handsomely rewarded for such.

But imagine how much Lopez would have sold these two had they been run in the same efficiency as how the MVP Group does it today. The Lopez family couldn't sell these companies at even higher prices simply because they weren't well-managed. When MVP took over, profitability zoomed at levels that the Lopezes can only wish for.

Perhaps, the PBA does appear to be a bad investment. This, at least in the eyes of the Lopezes. Remember, they did the same in 2008, offering a much lower bid (or did they actually bid at all?) compared to Solar, and losing out.

The question though is what does MVP see in the PBA that the Lopez Group can't? Can MVP bring in more advertisers to meet the P900M requirement of the PBA while at the same time churn in a nice profit for themselves? Perhaps, and yes, maybe he can. But we all admit that it's the Lopez Group that may have the best chance of bringing in advertisers to the table because of their solid experience in the tv industry.

Which is why I see MVP looking at this as more of a "setting the stage" for building the sports network. If it earns, well and good. If not, then it'll be regarded as part of its investment cost as the PBA will still be the most effective tool in building a name for MVP's sports network.

ABS and PBA won't see eye to eye coz of the lockout clause regarding ads. Now, how can ABS recover the 900 million if they won't be allowed those ads.?

TV5 should improve their signal esp. in the provinces. Also that IBC 13, with MVP's money this is not a long shot. But still I would have preferred S23 and ABS' reach.

Kerby Raymundo reportedly got injured in their exhibition match in Cebu....

Canaleta and Salvador were in street clothes (maybe they were not allowed to play ncoz of an impending trade!)

Courtney Beasley may be on the way out... reportedly had no field-goals in the game

Signal issues? That shouldn't be a problem for the owner of the nation's leading telecommunications provider.. Hopefully it will improve in the days to come..

just an advice: don't expect it coming. coz TV5 and IBC 13 are going to switch over to digital broadcasting as what abs did. so just buy a digi box receiver while it's still cheap or get cable subscription. coz by the year 2015 NTC is shutting down analog transmissions and will only transmit digital tranmissions.

It’s final, Joe Devance is now a B-Meg Derby Ace Llamado while KG Canaleta and Jondan Salvador are now with the Air21 Express.

After two days of studying the trade transaction, Philippine Basketball Association commissioner Atty. Chito Salud approved the two-team, three-player deal.

“Two big men in exchange for Devance? I think that’s fair enough," Salud told GMA News. “But it took me two days before I finally made a decision because I wanted to carefully study the trade. In the end, I felt the trade is fair enough for both squads."

Devance will be playing in his third team in the past four seasons. He first suited up for the Welcoat Dragons (now Rain or Shine Elasto Painters), but was traded for Sol Mercado in the 2008-2009 season.

Only last week, the 6-foot-7 Fil-foreign player was shipped by the Aces to the Express for Jay-R Reyes. After a two-day stopover with Air21, Devance was sent to the Llamados, ending his turbulent journey in yet the best season of his career.

Canaleta, a multi-titled Slam Dunk champion, is returning to his original team. He was part of the Express squad that made it all the way to the Finals of the 2008 Fiesta Conference but lost to Barangay Ginebra.

Salvador, an undersized power forward, will help shore up the Express frontline. The team has Danny Seigle, Dorian Pena and Carlo Sharma alternating up front. - Rey Joble/OMG, GMA News
