Ah! So you mean, you want our guards and small forwards to match up 7 footer imports! Do you think that will help them improve their games?
The league can afford to hire imports of unlimited height. Why not? No doubt about it. How many times we saw it already.
Only that, the PBA are simply making sure that all players in every positions will be able to get equal opportunities to match up against imports. Consider this one: If the PBA will always use unlimited height, only centers and frontliners will be benefited. Only their games will be improved since they always match up with big imports. But how about the guards and swingmen? How can they improve if they will just guard their fellow locals and enjoy watching the match up between big guys underneath? Therefore, there are times they have to get 6'6" imports for the benefits of their swingmen and SF. Such that, they (swingmen and SF) can also have chance to match up with them (imports). Then for imports who stand 6'1" or 6'2", they could play the PG and OG positions, so this time, the guards can also have the opportunity to be pitted against them. They are just balancing the equation so that everybody will be able to have a chance to enchance their games by matching up with imports which play the same position with them.
I also agree that imports today are no longer dominating like those I've mentioned. Whether they are 6'1" or 7 foot. It could be that the locals are already used to playing with them and already adjusted to their brand of plays. Or the salary factor for imports which is very much lower than the other countries could be the other reason. When I first watch PBA in 1991, I red in the newspapers imports receiving $30K a month (if I'm not mistaken). Year after year, they're lowering it. And now I heared it's only $15K to $20K (correct me if I'm wrong). So rather than playing here, imports are going elsewhere and those going to us are mostly left overs.
