REALTORS TAKE GAME 3; TROPANG TEXTERS GRAB 2-1 LEAD
by Dennis PRINCIPE
Sunday, 18 January 2009

Sta. Lucia averted a possible shutout and made their series an interesting one as they defeated the Alaska Aces, 76-65 in Game three of their semifinals series Sunday night at the Araneta Coliseum.

Nelbert Omolon exploded for 25 points on 7-of-9 2-point field goal shooting and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the Realtors to the victory and cut Alaska’s lead, 2-1.

bitoy0118.jpg

Omolon had 15 points in the second quarter after going scoreless in the opening canto.

Only two players scored in double figures with last year’s rookie of the year Ryan Reyes adding ten markers. But it did not deter Sta. Lucia from winning the game as the rest of the Realtors clamped down on most if not all of the Aces’ top players.

Alaska had better shooting, percentage wise, but had lesser attempts as they shot 23-of-58 (39.7%) compared to Sta. Lucia’s 27-of-76 (35.5%).

Willie Miller had his usual numbers of 21 points while Joe Devance added 15.

Sta. Lucia outrebounded Alaska, 50 to 42, with the Realtors playing big in the offensive boards, 18 to 8.

What probably led to Alaska’s defeat was their atrocious 28 turnovers with Devance having seven miscues and Miller five. Sta. Lucia had 16 turnovers.

The Sta. Lucia-Alaska series may now have it’s own following, something which feared to be lacking as the Aces won the first two games with plenty to spare. Alaska took Game One, 92-76 then had an equally notable Game Two, scoring a 94-87 win.

Historically teams with a success rate of 84% (26 of 31) that took a 2-0 lead went on to win a best-of-seven series in the league.

Only five teams have overcome a 0-2 deficit in a best-of-seven series, four of them happening in the last seven years and two of them in the last five conferences.

If there’s any motivation for Sta. Lucia, Alaska were victims in two of those five teams which battled back to win the series.

In the second game bucked a career-night performance of Dondon Hontiveros and escaped with a nerve-wracking 110-106 win over San Miguel Beer.

With the score tied at 102, Hontiveros connected a three-pointer to give San Miguel a 105-102 lead, time down to 2:50.

In the next play Ranidel De Ocampo then scored a basket off a foul but missed his bonus free throw.

After a miss by San Miguel Jimmy Alapag made another basket from beyond the arc that gave the Tropang Texters a 107-105 lead.

Defense tightened up in the ensuing plays with Hontiveros splitting charities under a minute remaining in the game.

With 16.2 seconds to play, Ali Peek split his free throws off a foul by Mick Pennisi with Danny Seigle grabbing Peek’s missed free throw.

Rookie Bonbon Custodio received the ball from Seigle then went straight to their basket by eluding the defense of Jimmy Alapag. His shot however went over the mark as he also tried to avoid Peek’s outstretched arms.

Mark Cardona grabbed the loose ball then was fouled by Hontiveros. Cardona sank both free throws for the final count.

Hontiveros had a career high in scoring with 39 points aside fom grabbing nine rebounds. He also had a career night in Game two of their best-of-three quarterfinals against Ginebra with 35 markers.

Alapag had 22 points while De Ocampo scored 17. Custodio contributed 15 points and five steals.

San Miguel missed the services of Dorian Pena because of a right ankle sprain and Jay Washington who had to attend to his wife giving birth Sunday.

Talk ‘N Text now leads their best-of-seven series against San Miguel, 2-1.

Miller stars as Aces move on brink of Finals stint
Wednesday, 21 January 2009
The idea of Alaska coach Tim Cone was to use a short rotation to win a big game.

The gamble paid off with the nine men rotated by Cone overcoming a tough challenge, carrying Alaska to the threshold of the KFC PBA Philippine Cup finale at the Astrodome Wednesday.

The Aces erected a 26-point lead in the first half and held off a spirited chase by the Sta. Lucia Realtors for an 88-83 win and a three-game-to-one lead in their best-of-seven semifinal showdown.

Alaska leaned heavily on the exploits of two-time MVP winner Willie Miller, LA Tenorio and Joe Devance as the Aces topped the Realtors to move a win shy of a first finals since beating the Talk n Text Phone Pals in the 2007 Fiesta Cup title playoff.

Curiously, Talk n Text also moved a win shy of winning its own semis showdown with San Miguel Beer.

Talk n Text and Alaska go for the clincher in Game Five in the same venue tomorrow.

Sta. Lucia, the reigning champion, and San Miguel need to beat Alaska and Talk n Text three in a row to salvage the series. For the record, Barangay Ginebra and Purefoods are the only teams which have pulled off the trick in the long history of the pro league.

"Whew! It was tough. Because it's a big game, I went with the (main) guys, playing them with much minutes. I just worried with tonight's game and bahala na. It nearly backfired as the guys got tired in the end," said Alaska coach Time Cone.

"Sta. Lucia is a team with so much character. They just won't quit. No matter how far you get ahead, they can come back and get at you. You really can't relax," Cone added.

And having squandered a 3-1 lead before, Cone said he knows very well the series is far from over.

"We've been here before. The last time we got this lead, we got beat. We remember it very well. We know it's not safe specially against Sta. Lucia," said Cone, recalling a sad experience, blowing a 3-1 lead versus Purefoods in their 2006 Philippine Cup semifinals duel.

Miller and Tony dela Cruz got the Aces to a strong start as they combined for 23 points, outscoring the entire Sta. Lucia team in the first quarter.

The Aces took the opening quarter at 31-14 on a superb 77.8 percent field-goal shooting and kept the pace to stretch their lead to 53-35 at halftime.

It was a lopsided first half with the Aces leading by as many as 26 points at 49-23.

The Realtors picked up their game in the third period, converting 38.9 percent of their shots as against the Aces' 30.4-percent clip. Still, Alaska preserved a big lead, 72-56, going into the final canto.

But the Realtors, indeed, just won't give up.

Joseph Yeo and Ryan Reyes led the Sta. Lucia charge as the Realtors rallied to within four points four times with the last at 83-87.

At 79-84, Sta. Lucia could have put more pressure on Alaska but Devance blocked a drive-in layup by Yeo.

"It was the biggest play of the night," said Cone of Devance's block. (NC)

The scores:
Alaska 88 - Miller 20, Dela Cruz 15, Tenorio 12, De Vance 10, Cariaso 10, Hugnatan 9, Thoss 8, Ferriols 4, Fonacier 0.

Sta. Lucia 83 - Yeo 24, Williams 16, Reyes 13, Omolon 9, Miranda 8, Espino 6, Gonzales 3, Daa 2, Aquino 2, Coronel 0, Mendoza 0.

Quarterscores: 31-17, 53-35, 72-56, 88-83

My personal bets Alaska and Talk N' Text are a win a way from making it to the Finals.

I just don't see Sta. Lucia advancing. Nelbert Omolon is somewhat inconsistent. While aging Marlou Aquino and Paolo Mendoza failed to give ample bench support for the team.

San Miguel looked "old" last night against TNT as they could not neutralize Chot Reyes' run-and-gun style of play.

Tyrone is an exciting big guard who has either an NBA future or a Euroleague type of career.

Tyrone was a NCAA II All American in the 2006-07 season and he averaged 26ppg and 8rpg for Concord University shooting 58% from the FG and 30% from the 3pt. He averaged 5 assists per game because he has great passing skills.

He is an exciting player who specializes in creating off of the dribble and he is very athletic. He finishes great with both hands and he is a great scorer.

He needs to work a little on his 3pt and perimeter shooting and he will be a NBA or high-level European league prospect.

He needs a quality league in Europe to get experience for the next level.

Tyrone is committed to working hard and becoming a great player.

Sta. Lucia stays alive

Sta. Lucia, showing steely resolve, recovered from a poor start to score an 81-74 win over Alaska Milk in Game 5 and keep its title-retention bid alive in the KFC-PBA Philippine Cup semifinals series last night at the Astrodome in Pasay City.

Prodigious guard Joseph Yeo, who averaged 15.5 points in this series, rose to the occasion when the chips were down, knocking down 22 points, including 11 in the pivotal fourth quarter, while adding five rebounds and two assists in 35 minutes of action to cut Alaska’s lead to 3-2 in their best-of-seven semis.

Yeo’s last three-pointer proved lethal as it gave the Realtors a 77-72 lead with 2:12 to play.

Again, Sta. Lucia coach Boyet Fernadez credited the team’s "Big D" for the win.

Prior to Yeo’s basket, the Realtors put on a defendive dragnet that forced the Aces to commit a 24-second violation.

That led to a triple by point guard Denok Miranda, giving Sta. Lucia a 74-72 advantage with 3:35 left in the game.

Sta. Lucia hopes to tie the series in Game 6 tomorrow also at the same venue.

"We lived for another day," Fernandez said. "It’s really a nice win, but we’re still down. We’ll just take it one game at a time, we’re definitely looking at Sunday’s game."

Fernandez said he was elated his boys did not give up despite a poor start.

"I’m happy because hindi bumitaw players ko. Even though Alaska started strong, we came back. Sana lang nga hindi magiging futile itong panalo kung matatalo kami sa Game 6. It’s more of mental preparation," Fernandez added.

In league history, only three teams managed to recover from a 1-3 deficit to force a Game 7.

But only two went on to win a seven-game series, including the Ginebra San Miguel which beat Shell in a classic title showdown in the 1991 First Conference Finals.

Purefoods did the same trick against Alaska in the semifinals of this same conference in 2006.

Overall though, 31 of the 33 teams that took a 3-1 advantage in a seven-game showdown went on to win the series, including 21 of 22 in the last 18 years.

Four other SLR players finished in double-digit as forward Kelly Williams, the 2008 Season Most Valuable Player (MVP), scored 14 with eight boards, while Dennis Espino added 12. Ryan Reyes and Nelbert Omolon chipped in 10 apiece that underscored the team’s well-balanced attack.

Espino and Reyes also shone on the defensive end with 15 and 10 rebounds each. In all, the Realtors outrebounded the Aces, 51-41.

Alaska, which took a 3-1 lead following an 88-83 victory in Game 4 last Wednesday, got a team-high 17 points from playmaker LA Tenorio, while forward Reynel Hugnatan had 13 and big man Sonny Thoss added 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Former two-time MVP Willie Miller, who averaged 18 points per game in the series, was held to only six points on 3-of-12 shooting from the field, including 0-of-5 from the three-point territory.

Miller also had four of Alaska’s 19 turnovers.

The Aces jumped the gun and took a 16-point advantage, 32-16, on a basket by Miller near the end of the opening period. The quarter ended with Alaska up, 32-22.

Then came the Realtors’ expected fightback that saw them trim the deficit to one-point thrice, the last at 41-42 on a lay-up by Nelbert Omolon. But LA Tenorio scored a running jumper that gave the Aces a 44-41 halftime lead.

The Realtors managed to rally behind their stifling defense and rebounding that gave them a 27-16 advantage, including 17-9 in the second frame.

Sta. Lucia 81 — Yeo 22, Williams 14, Espino 12, Reyes 10, Omolon 10, Miranda 8,Gonzales 5, Coronel 0, Daa 0, Aquino 0, Mendoza 0.

Alaska 74 — Tenorio 17, Hugnatan 13, Thoss 10, Cariaso 9, De Vance 8, Ferriols 6, Miller 6, Fonacier 3, Dela Cruz 2, Borboran 0.

Quarters: 22-32, 41-44, 58-59, 81-74.

San Miguel also extends series

San Miguel Beer, drawing an inspired game from Marc Jean Pingris, survived another do-or-die match as it hammered a 125-115 victory over Talk ’N Text in Game 5 of their best-of-seven semifinals series in the KFC-PBA Philippine Cup last night at the Astrodome in Pasay City.

Though known for his defense and rebounding skills, the 6-foot-5 Pingris showed the other facet of his game by scoring a career-best 28 points to help the Beermen scuttle several rallies of the Tropang Texters in their own best-of-seven series.

He completed his game-long brilliance by grabbing 12 boards. Also shining for the Beermen was Jay Washington who tallied 19 points and 10 boards.

Pingris’ 28-point explosion enabled him to better his 23-point performance which he established while still playing for Purefoods during the 2005-06 Fiesta Cup.

Despite the loss, Talk ’N Text still leads the series, 3-2, but San Miguel’s win in a highly-physical game gave the Siot Tanquingcen-mentored squad the momentum going into the crucial Game 6.

"We showed some scriptures (from the Bible from the Book of Romans after Game 4) that says, ‘We have to rejoice in our suffering, to produce perseverance, perseverance to produce character, character to produce hope," Tanquingcen said.

That best typified their game last night.

"It’s not fun to be down, but we have to go through all of this, we don’t know what will happen next. We have no choice but we’re just trying to do our best," he added.

The Beermen led by as many as 19 points when they unleashed a 15-1 run that turned a 75-70 lead to 90-71 with 40.1 seconds left in the third quarter.

And San Miguel was up by 18 points, 103-85, on Lordy Tugade triple but TNT moved dangerously within seven, 96-103 when Yancy de Ocampo scored 11 straight points highlighted by three straight triples, 5:27 remaining in the game.

Another trey, this time by Renren Ritualo, closed the gap anew at seven, 108-115, but in that play, de Ocampo planted a closed fist on Danny Seigle’s forehead.

He was given a Flagrant Foul Penalty 2 that led to his ejection. He will be banned for one game for that aside from paying a P20,000 fine. That hastened the downfall of the Texters.

Tugade and Seigle finished 14 points each while Dondon Hontiveros and Jonas Villanueva combined for 22 points.

Protecting a slim 30-25 advantage, San Miguel unleashed a telling17-7 blast capped by a tomahawk slam-dunk by forward Tugade that gave the Beerman their first sizable lead at 47-32 with 7:22 left in the second period.

Although TNT trimmed the deficit to nine points on a three-pointer by Ritualo, the Beermen ended the first half with a 7-1 run for a 66-51 lead.

San Miguel 125 — Pingris 28, Washington 19, Tugade 14, Seigle 14, Hontiveros 12, Custodio 11, Villanueva 10, Racela 9, Gonzales 5, Pennisi 3.

Talk ’N Text 115 — Cardona 19, Dillinger 18, De Ocampo R. 17, ritualo 13, De Ocampo Y. 11, Castro 10, Carey 10, Peek 9, Alapag 8, Reyes 0, Lao 0.

Quarter: 30-25, 66-51, 93-74, 125-115.

Sta. Lucia’s Denok Miranda, center, slams into the defense of Alaska’s Joachim Thoss and LA Tenorio. JUN MENDOZA

Sta. Lucia Realty and San Miguel Beer stayed alive last night, beating Alaska Milk and Talk n Text , respectively, in Game Five of the KFC PBA Philippine Cup Final Four at the Astrodome.

The Realtors squeezed out a 81-74 win over the Aces while the Beermen pulled off a 125-115 victory over the Tropang Texters, forcing at least another game each in both series.

The defending champions and the league’s winningest ball club go for the equalizer in Game Six in the same venue tomorrow.

Marc Pingris and Jay Washington both came through with a double-double game with five other Beermen putting in at least 10 points as the Beermen survived a fourth knockout game dating back to the wildcard round.

“There’s nothing miraculous there. We’re just trying our best where we are right now,” said San Miguel coach Siot Tanquingcen.

“We lived to fight another game but we’re still down by two games. We’ll still take it one game at a time. We’re done with tonight’s game and we’re now looking forward to Game Six,” said Sta. Lucia coach Boyet Fernandez.

“I’m so glad the guys didn’t give up, overcoming tonight’s challenge. I hope we end our pattern of playing bad after a won game. Maybe, we can do it preparing ourselves mentally more than physically,” Fernandez added.

Joseph Yeo and Denok Miranda combined for 17 points in the payoff quarter and sank back-to-back three-pointers down the stretch to scuttle Alaska’s bid.

The entire Sta. Lucia team played tough defense throughout the contest, holding Alaska down to two points in the last four minutes and to a total output which was nine below the Aces’ average in the first four games of the series.

Willie Miller, a top candidate for the Best Player of the Conference honors, in particular was limited six — his lowest in the series. The two-time MVP winner averaged 17.4 points before the contest.

In a major adjustment, Fernandez essentially rotated only six men in Yeo, Miranda, Kelly Williams, Dennis Espino, Ryan Reyes and Nelbert Omolon, and the gamble paid off with the Realtors staying close and beating the Aces on a strong finish.

Yeo led all scorers with 22 points with Espino and Reyes both coming through with a double-double performance. The former logged 15 rebounds and 12 points and the latter tallied 10 points and the same number of rebounds.

Alaska actually started stronger, taking a 10-point lead at 32-22 at the end of the first quarter.

But the Realtors hang on, coming within three, 41-44, at halftime and drawing within one, 58-59, going into the payoff period.

PBA: TNT center Yancy suspended for Game 6
01/24/2009 | 08:34 PM

MANILA, Philippines – Talk ‘N Text starting center Yancy De Ocampo was meted a one-game suspension and will miss Game Six of the team’s semifinals series against San Miguel in the KFC Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Philippine Cup on Sunday.

The Commissioner’s Office handed out the suspension in the light of De Ocampo’s flagrant foul penalty 2 committed against Danny Seigle during Friday’s Game Five of the best-of-seven showdown.

The 6-foot-8 former St. Francis of Assisi College standout was called for the foul with a little under two minutes left in the match won by the Beermen, 125-115. He was subsequently ejected out of the game.

Flagrant foul penalty 2 is subjected to an automatic one-game suspension.

On top of it, De Ocampo was also fined P20,000.

His absence is expected to be a big blow for the Tropang Texters especially with De Ocampo being at the forefront of the team’s late rally in the payoff period, scoring all of his 11 points during that stretch

TALK ‘N TEXT ENTERS FINALS
by dennis PRINCIPE
Sunday, 25 January 2009

San Miguel Beer almost rebounded from a huge 17-point deficit in the third quarter and nearly forced a Game 7.

But three of Harvey Carey’s 22 rebounds proved to be the clincher as Talk ‘N Text Tropang Texters notched a 116-115 overtime win over the Beermen and seal the first Finals seat in six games of the KFC-PBA Philippine Cup semifinal series Sunday night at the Cuneta Astrodome.

In the dying minutes of the game San Miguel seemed to have a much better opportunity to win the game as Jay Washington converted a basket inside the paint off a miss by point guard Jonas Villanueva and give the Beermen a 115-113 lead, time down to 1:58.

After Washington’s basket, Mac Mac Cardona shot the game’s final basket, a three pointer with still 1:41 left in overtime.

Coming off a time-out Lordy Tugade missed a three-pointer with Carey collaring rebound #20. Talk ’N Text failed to score in the next play as Cardona missed a jumper, giving San Miguel a chance to regain the lead.

Washington however missed what looked liked an easy basket as he was left almost all by himself inside the shaded lane and Carey getting rebound #21.

Washington would have been the game’s hero had the Beermen won as he sent the game to overtime with his three-point shot in regulation which ended knotted at 111.

There was about five second differential between the game and shot clocks and as Ali Peek was forced to take a short jumper in their possession which missed, Carey again grabbed the game’s biggest rebound which he gave back to Peek who then passed it to Cardona.

Cardona, booed to no end by San Miguel fans every time he holds the leather the entire series, ran backcourt as time expired and gave Beermen fans a salute as if to say he had the last say in the series.

Cardona scored a game high 34 points while Jimmy Alapag added 27.

The Beermen, who rallied back from a 77-60 deficit but eventually fell short was led by Danny Siegle who had 32 markers.

Talk ‘N Text’s series win over San Miguel was the first ever for the PLDT franchise in six face-offs. The Tropang Texters will get to face the winner of the Alaska-Sta. Lucia series.

In the second game the Alaska Aces ended their own semis series with an 87-83 win over the Sta. Lucia series and wrap up their Final four battle, 4-2.
