Club Captain and legend Fragiskos Alvertis has retired and Milenko Tepic is on his way to Athens to sign his contract.

Welcome to PAO, Nick :)

And welcome to PAO, Milenko. Waiting for the Photo of him holding the green jersey as well :p

And thanks for everything, Fragiskos! Our eternal captain, a true legend in green. Great move to retire his jersey, no other PAO player shall wear the #4 again.

--------------

So this is the depth chart of the players with a contract for the upcoming season (Kecman excluded, who'll leave):

G: Diamantidis - Calathes - Verginis
G: Spanoulis - Nicholas
F: Tepic - Perperoglou
F: Fotsis - Tsartsaris
C: Pekovic - Batiste - Shermadini

FAs:
Jasikevicius
Chatzivrettas
Sakota

Saras wants to stay, PAO/Obradovic want him as well, the question is if there'll be an agreement about the length of the contract.
Verginis should be loaned to another A1 team in order to receive playing time. Sakota can go :p
I'd love X-Vrettas to stay, he's such a dedicated player, a hard worker - but it seems that there's really no place for him in the rotation and I doubt that he'd like to be the 13th man, making the roster only when others are injured/rested.
And I'd keep Tsartsaris (there were voices throughout the season that he might leave). The summer break will help him to recover somehow from all the minor injuries he had during the last two years, and he's still a great finesse player. Imo he can still offer valuable help as a role player, coming off the bench.

Saras should stay..He showed he can be the go to guy in many matches the same way like Spanoulis and DD.For me,along with our big men HE was the MVP for this year.He will also be a good teacher for Nick who seems to have adapted many elements common with Saras' attacking style.

Zotc said that Tsartsa has been injured during all season..That explains in a way why he seemed bad..But after the TOP 16 his standards were satisfying and i think he is a PF we can count on.Off course is Ksystof or Matjaz want to join...I wouldn't say no:D.

As for Hatzivrettas..soldier and all that stuff but I think that PAO is now some steps ahead of his quality..We thank him for everything and wish him luck:D.I hope Zotc won't do the same mistake as 2 years ago when he kept Tomasevic because in the last games of the season his appearances were good..

Like I said, Saras wants to stay, PAO/Obradovic/Itoudis want him to stay - and the fans all have the same opinion as well.
Saras is an amazing player, one of the very best executing the pick & roll. It'd be difficult to find a replacement, especially now that he has found his role. Last year his stats were better, but this year he played the better basketball.
The only problem is the length of the contract. Saras'd like to end his career at Panathinaikos, while PAO doesn't offer him a 2+1 year contract atm. But I'm quite optimistic that we'll see Saras in green again next season...

As for Tsartsaris: that injury in the beginning of 2008 really bothered him. He should've rested last summer already, maybe even undergoing that surgery. Instead he had a long summer, didn't recover and hence was bothered by his old problems all season long, resulting in suboptimal performances. I can't blame him, it was the Olympic Games afterall, a dream for all athletes. But he simply had to take this years summer off. Since he decided to do so, I'd keep him.

As for Calathes: I don't think that he'll have a role similar to Verginis (who wasn't even on the bench most of the time) - but if Saras stays, then I'd not expect a whole lot of playtime for Calathes in his first season. Calathes and Tepic are replacing X-Vrettas and Kecman afterall, who both really didn't play too much.

Anyways, extending Saras, maybe (just maybe) signing another PF - not a lot of changes need to be made. Afterall the team won all possible titles this year, there's no real point in turning things upside down.

Any news about the situation of Shermadini? Could he be loaned to play more?

Verginis guys will go onloan as some teams have asked for himfrom PAO already.so with this full roster the young must go somewhere to take minutes.
Tsartsaris is essential player for PAO and not only on court.he is a member of the team 7 years now and he is a vital part of the core of PAO.Even if he didnt have a good year he must stay.dont forget his injuries the last 2 years is a result of continue games with PAO and Greece.this year him and some more will go vacations.
So from the others i wish also Chatzivrettas will stay even if his minutes will be decreased more next year.i hope he will understand and accept his role.
so for me

guard

DD,Spanoulis,Saras,Kalathes

Guard/Forward

Tepic,Nickolas,Perperoglou

Forward/Center

Pekovic,Batiste,Fotsis,Tsartsaris

questions

Shemardini (loan maybe),Chatzivrettas,Sakota
Sure leaving

Kecman, Verginis (loan),Alvertis (retire), Sakota (loan probably)

if you ask me i think next year roster will be tremendous

possible one more transfer..

shemardini more timing and possible big development like Perperoglou or a ready quality PF?

Will Calathes be loaned to a smaller team in order to get playing time??
Or will he take Verginis spot??

Calathes will have time in PAO.Is much more ready than Verginis who needs playing time thats why he will be loaned.Ofcourse Calathes is not the one that will make the difference in his first year. But surely Obradovic will give him time.

i think saras must change his name to Sarakakis since he must be thought from now on as Greek citizen

as you can see he is the protagonist in many photos :D

Hahaha! Nice pics! He looks comfortable at "bouzoukia" throwing flowers at everybody. I wonder how much did they spend that night. I see countless baskets of flowers...at 25 to 75 euros each basket..Jesus...I think of that everytime I buy aspirins and other medicine :p

Considering the way Obradovic has constructed the team and uses the roster, Panathinaikos's depth chart has only three positions: backcourt, PF, C. No pure forward that can play both the 3 and 4 exists, and all the backourt players (except the pure SF Perpe), can play at least 2 positions, so almost any combination between them is possible. Therefore, the 12-man roster, provided that Saras stays, should look like this:

Backourt: Saras VSpan DD / Nicholas Perpe Tepic Calathes
PF: Fotsis / Tsartsaris
C: Pekovic / Batiste / Shermadini

Sakota is, as Trifilli pointed out, a FA, and imo it would be a huge mistake resigning him. It seems that his offensive game is not improving and his D is subpar for a top level team (not quick enough to guard a quality SF, not strong enough to guard a quality PF). For a team like Panionios he could become a valuable member, for a team like Panathinaikos he's just not good enough.

As much as I admire Chatzivrettas's commitment and poise, I think that it's best for him to move on and seek more playing time in a team such as Aris (who are rumoured to be interested). After all, he's still 32 and not yet diminishing, as the energy he shows on the court would tell you. It will also be good for the team, as Chatzi's minutes will inevitably eat off a bright prospect's (Tepic, Calathes) playing time that is much needed for their development.

Verginis should be loaned out, he is evidently the weakest player in Panathinaikos's backcourt, and will see no playing time again. And while it is very important to train with legend guards every day, playing time for a young player is of the essence. Thus, I don't think that another year for him being the 13th man would benefit him or PAO.

Kecman is most certainly out, no need to discuss about him.

Therefore, if Saras confirms the reports and resigns, after Tsartsaris's decision to pit in this summer and provided that Shermadini is really as talented as people say, i really don't think that Panathinaikos should sign any other top-class player. More players would disrupt the balance of the team, there are simply no more minutes left for anyone else to get a decent rhythm going. The team is (near-)perfectly tuned, minutes will be shared between top-notch players, there is a healthy ratio of experienced/young players, no 07-08 phenomena of players at their top of the game excluded from the rotation and evidently losing confidence (Becirovic).

That said, I think that Panathinaikos should sign a young and promising PF-C. Not Velickovic or anything, just another Shermadini. Batiste and Tsartsa are not getting any younger, so it probably would be wise to look ahead for somebody to give an induction year to, just like they did with Shermadini this year.

Great addition... could solve the "problem" in the 3 spot and keep PAO with 3 great ball handlers on the court all-time.

i dont see PAO getting another tall guy.I think its time for Shermantini to shine.what we hear all those months is that he is really good on practises. Its time to show it i think.Especially now that he can communicate with his teammated since his english are in a decent level.
