Ahhh... Look at all these people with Greek flags in the stadium... Makes you wonder how many of them are really born in Greece does it not? Or are they just Germans who happen to have Greek roots and think they are Greek. Shame on these German traitors

Is this as factual as Greece having three naturalised players in the current roster?

This whole discussion is pointless.
You two are right in your defense.
It depends on how you percieve your NT. If you think it is Greek NT, you're right, if it's Greece NT, you are not.

Yes he can.

Just a littel bit. I would not call it fluid greek. i have been working 2 years in greece. I know better greek than clethas. I fallow your sport papers and seen video intervjuvs with him.

Your credibility just keeps increasing mate.

Deschain, I agree that the conversation is pointless. Greek national does not mean Greek basketball product. Having said that these guys are certainly not naturalised. End of discussion.

they prob have been naturalised. or wos chlethas born with greek passport in his hand lol my greek mate.

iundertand you littel bit, we have diaspora too such as vladimir micov cska moscow. but on paper diaspora aint greeks.

You are useless! You don't know anything!

Yes he obtained Greek citizenship automatically by birth. He got the passport when he applied. Simple.

interesting. since nations like germany only allow one citizenship. maybe we should take this to the political forum on this forum.

At the least, you could stop showing how ignorant you are and start spelling names right. Out of respect to other in the forum, in nothing else.

Calathes or originally "Kalathis", which means "basket" (kalathi).

Calathes is so "Greek" that he does not even know how to pronounce his own name. If you ask him, he will say it is pronounced as Cuh - lay - thes. It's funny, because he does not even know how is own name is really pronounced. There is no difference between Bramos / Calathes and Kaman.

Bramos is the same thing. He pronounces his name as Bray - mose. Again, he is so "Greek" that he does not even know how to pronounce his own name.

Now, Koufos is something totally different. Koufos is definitely Greek.

how serbs always play better for nt than for clubs unlike our primadonas... raško katić plays unbelievable :D

Keselj is best example of it ever. Looks terrible in his club teams and looks like some star in national team. Even Tepic, who was mostly useless as a player in his clubs was somehow able to perform in their national team.

New Greek-style Great Britain national team:

Ben Gordon/Steve Blake
Gordon Hayward/Mike Miller
Luol Deng/Chandler Parsons
Kevin Love/Ryan Anderson
David Lee/BJ Mullens

damn...this looks like hands down the best european team of the last decade or so;)
if only these "brits" cared for their land of ancestors...

If only the guys in bold actually could get a British passport...

Too bad not one of them is eligible under law. I mean, why should UK even have such laws?

There are some countries that really do abuse this though. Greece absolutely no and anyone saying that is trolling.

However, look at Nigeria. Perfect example. Every year they have 10-11 Americans on their team and FIBA allows it simply because they claim Nigerian descent automatically gives a right to play.

That's an egregious example and it never should be allowed.

Buttom line is noon of them are product of Greeks Basketball school. So what is the deference if you put aside your nationalist feelings about Chlethas and Bramos.

Greeeks roots or not, Makaleb and Clethas are the same thing.

He is a diaspora Greek which is enough for me. Both Calathes and Koufos have played for the U20 Greek NT by the way. The Greek Federation has a good program in scouting talents of the Greek diaspora worldwide. Once they detect a potential talented player in his teenage years, he is selected to play for the young Greek NT, after which they usually receive a contract for a Greek club team.

The only naturalized player who played for the Greek national team was Tsakalidis, who did speak Greek btw. So it is a dubious case. I even remember that players like Stojakovic were denied playing for Greece because they were not Greek. Mike Batiste wanted to play for Greece too. Respectfully denied though.

I have to say that Greeks, along with the Serbs and Lithuanians have a good record on that.

But this is a stupid policy. Peja has 10 times more connection to Greece than Calathes or Bramos does. Koufos again, is not the same situation so he should be not lumped with them. Koufos is without any doubt Greek.

Calathes? His grandfather's parents came from Greece and emigrated to USA, or something like that. It's hardly anything different from Kaman and Germany and there is no point to argue on it. Koufos or Galis is totally different as they were born like just 2 weeks after their parents moved from Greece.

Think about how ironic and dumb this policy is. Calathes as soon as his season was over in Panathinaikos or Greece NT would instantly be on the first plane back to Florida. While Peja who was denied to play for the national team despite asking to play for Greece, actually lives in Greece.

These types of things are hypocritical and a bit irrational as policies.

And I do not think they scout any Greeks outside of USA. I never heard one word mentioned for Pangos for example, and that is because he was from Canada, so they never had heard of him. They only are following Greek guys in USA and not anywhere else.

Do not even mention Seikaly I see either? This is how hypocritical this nonsense is. Seikaly was more Greek many times than Bramos or Calathes and deserved much much more to be in Greek national team than they do. Yet he had to go get naturalized by USA to play in some national team.

I would not be proud of these policies, as they are very outdated and very close minded.

Hard to belive that greek basketball federation give diaspora chance in front of own players. Greek born players most be upset.

I would say yes to Vladimir Micov most def, but Greece is a huge basketball nation with so many players.

I think we will never agree on this, we are both right and wrong i guess. To me Clehethas is like Makaleb. They are products of some others no matter how much patriotic stuff you put into this case.
