Is there any chance that Ray Parks will be available for this team?![]()
THIS piece is devoted solely to the players who showed up for last Monday’s tryouts of the Nokia RP U-18 tournament at the PhilSports Arena.
Around 150 players attended the tryouts despite the short notice. We only came out with the announcements after Christmas, and we’re not so sure if the aspirants would take notice, considering they might be busy for the holidays.
I hope that we had big number of aspirants to choose from, not only the best talent, but also the most applicable talent available for the Nokia RP U-18 squad.
We might have subsisted with smaller and quicker players, but we might have to adjust a little for the Fiba U-18 tournament set in September.
The lessons from the U-16 tournament in Johor Bahru, where we ranked fourth, will be very valuable as we form the U-18 team.
So it is possible that because of their good performance in the U-16 team, these same players might be considered for the U-18 squad.
While it is true that the team may not have the best talent, but it is strong collectively. This is true because the players played as a team and as a family, with each one ably filling up for the others when needed.
Of course, the highlight should always be on the Smart Gilas team, so I assured coach Rajko Toroman that I will continue to value his inputs for the U-18 team, knowing fully well that the Nokia RP youth teams are also feeders for the seniors men’s team like Smart Gilas.
As envisioned by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas, headed by Manny Pangilinan and executive director Nolia Eala, this is to ensure the continuity and synergy of basketball programs under one wing.
This is not only true with the Nokia RP youth teams, but also the Nokia National Basketball Training Center D-League.
We are very happy that the first part of the league has gone smoothly, and we already caught sight of potential top players from Luzon and the National Capital Region. But this corner will not mention them for now, so as to keep them focused on their goals of being better basketball players.
I hope we can get a steady flow of these players for the national teams, starting with the U-18 team, as we also need to come up with a strong showing in September.

Last night there were about 20 players who showed up for the second round of tryouts for the U-18 team. Most of the players were pretty familiar.
From Ateneo: Ael Banal and Paolo Pe
From San Beda: Ponso Gotladera, Chris Javier, Baser Amer, Dave Moralde and Koga
From Zobel: Gwynne Capacio
From JRU: JR Yasa, Richie Lontoc and Oliveiro (Oliveiros ?)
From Colegio Sta Monica: Jess Saitanan
From TIP: Roy Rosario
From UST: Aljon Mariano, Kyle Neypes, Anton Altamirano
From FERN: Jet Romeo, Russel Escoto (Escoto was limping from a bad sprain and was at the sidelines) and Christian the long-limbed 6'10" Cameroonian
From Perpetual: Joseph Eriobu and Mon Jamon
From Letran: Jeff Ongteco and Bon Pinat
A couple of kids I didn't recognize: some bruising forward surnamed Trollano and a smallish dead-eye shooter who wore a red Nike Elite training jersey with the number 52 on it.
That Christian boy just turned 17 and is apparently working on gaining Filipino citizenship, presumably care of FEU. He can run fast, has great lateral agility, but seems not to know how to jump. At his height and with his limbs though he can dunk with two hands without much of a jump, has good instincts on the shot-blocks too, doesn't try to swat every shot. This boy is still at least a full year away from being a legit player.
Best highlight of the whole affair was a two-handed dunk in traffic off his own drive by Eriobu. This boy can handle, pass, has great natural athletic ability, can shoot the three-ball and was easily the most versatile player of the whole lot last night.
Speaking of dunking, Rosario, a lean but well-muscled 6'6" forward had the second-best dunk, a two-handed transition dunk of his own. Rosario also showed some range all the way out to the three-point arc but is a little on the stiff side, has some issues trying to go side-to-side and bending his body or twisting in the air.
Another good dunk was a tomahawk from Neypes during a fastbreak. Capacio, Ongteco and Yasa were doing two-handed dunks in drills and breaks.
Romeo and Amer were generally dominating the ball during the scrimmages and the transition / mismatch drills. In one stretch during the scrimmage, both guards engaged in a duel, trading baskets and generally not involving their teammates except for check passes.
Paolo Pe is not an option at the 4 and 5 spots.
Ael Banal was the one explaining to the denser ones how the halfcourt drills work. His favorite charities were the Cameroonian, Lontoc and Rosario.
Saitanan was under the weather and struggled to play his usual game. He still had more than enough game to outplay both Gotladera and Javier.
Altamirano should make the final lineup and be the designated starter at the 1 spot in spite of Amer and Romeo being around.
All told it was a good collection of size: the Cameroonian at 6'10", Rosario at 6'6", Escoto at 6'6", Gotladera and Javier both at 6'5", if Saitanan makes it that's another 6'5".
At the swing spots, Banal is a legit 6-flat, Eriobu is easily 6'2". Ongteco at 6'4" and Capacio at 6'3" will make for interesting options at either forward spot. Capacio however was a bit dominant on the ball last night as well.

I like to share this post made in Gameface:

Isn't Bon Pinat, the son of Letran's asst coach, a legit 6'7"?
Yup pero medyo hilaw pa. Yung Saitanan reminds me of Baste's Abueva pero less physical and less angas.
yep. i saw him last monday but i think coach e will not get this guy like aldrin lunas of san beda.
does this 6'9 cameroonian a filipino??
H.2.3.3 A national team participating in an international competition of FIBA may have only one player on its team who has acquired the legal nationality of that country by naturalisation or by any other means after having reached the age of sixteen (16).
Isn't this the rule on naturalized players?
Does anyone in SBP have tried to contact some players from the RiseOfTheSun ? They could certainly get a handful of quality 6'5 players there plus some Juinor Aspirants and some of the U-16 main stays.Imagine an RP youth team with four 6 foot five players on the floor..with Keifer Ravena doing the point guard chores
