6'5" Alfonso Gotladera and 6'5" Chris Javier of the Red Cubs. Gotladera is the starting center while Javier is the back up center for the Red Cubs.

You can also add the 2009 NCAA Juniors Finals MVP 5'10" Baser Amer, who I think is the best point guard in high school basketball right now. All three are still in 3rd year HS.

From what I know there are already talks in Baser in joining the tryouts. For me I asked Al and Javs to join the tryout. Also got in touch with Russell Escoto of FEU.

Also informed Coaches Jamike Jarin (Ateneo High School), Britt Reroma (San Beda Taytay) and Boris Aldeguer (De La Salle Zobel) about the said tryout.

Interestingly listed in this articles are Ice Ciria Cruz of Arellano and Kevin Alas. If they are still qualified for the U18 Pool, they will be a big plus because of their experience in college. I hope they are still qualified.

Bro your article is outdated (01/18/2008), with changes in rules on the age range of the Youth Olympic Games, majority of those mentioned are over the limit set between 14 and 18 years of age being the athlete’s age on 31 December 2010.

hehe the u18 team will be "mahahaba" with escoto around but less college to be players less politics hope fully not

U18 college players will be a big plus if ever they get selected since they compete against older and more experienced players compared to hs players. Here are some I know off the top of my head: Donahue and Malanday of NU, Pelopero of UE, Paredes of DLSU, Delfinado and Mariano of UST, Escoto of FEU.

Hopefully some players born in 94 are able to crack the pool since they'll still be eligible till 2012.

Nokia RP U-18 Open tryouts draw interest

Nokia RP U-18 Open tryouts draw interest

(The Philippine Star) Updated January 02, 2010 12:00 AM

MANILA, Philippines - Nokia RP head coach Eric Altamirano yesterday said the Nokia RP U-18 team is now drawing interest with the open tryouts set on Jan. 4, at 5 p.m. at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig.

Altamirano said aspirants born before1992 are welcome as long they make the grade for the team that will compete in the Fiba Asia U-18 Championships for Men in September next year.

He said the renewed interest is primarily due to the commitment of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) headed by Manny Pangilinan and executive director Noli Eala in the youth basketball program with support coming from Nokia Philippines and TAO Corporation.

“We were receiving a lot of queries about the upcoming tryouts. And much of the credit goes to the SBP for its commitment to make the youth program stronger and make it the backbone of the Philippine basketball program,” he said.

“The under-16 and under-18 teams in particular benefited from the support of Nokia Philippines and TAO Corporation,” he added.

Altamirano said he needs all the help he can get in forming the team as he also called on Filipinos to encourage young players, particularly in their neighborhoods, to attend the tryouts.

“These players may not know it, but they are the ones needed in the team. I am emphasizing that they are now playing for a cause that is bigger than themselves,” said Altamirano.

The Nokia RP U-16 team placed fourth in the inaugural Fiba Asia U-16 Tournament held recently in Johor Bahru, Malaysia. It was the highest finish by any Philippine youth team in recent years.

Also expected to try out for slots are members of the Nokia RP U-16 team like Kiefer Ravena, Von Pessumal, Roldan Sara, Gelo Alolino, Jeron Teng, Jeoffrey Javillonar, Kevin Ferrer, Mike Pate, Mike Tolomia, Nestor Bantayan, Paolo Romero and Cedric Labing-Isa.

What I want for the team is:

A healthy Labing-isa. His quickness was missed very much.

Bobby Parks in the lineup.

3 good players who are 6'5 or taller.

Consistent Freethrow and outside shooting.

And we should rename the thread into the Nokia U-18 Team Pilipinas 2010
to give credit to Nokia and TAO corp for their wonderful contribution in RP youth basketball.

if you can train these players properly maybe you can create a team with great talent in speed, shooting and power.

great, the thread has been renamed. I think we need taller guys. more than 6'7. LOL.

i heard they're just finalizing the schedules so that it would not affect the red cubs from playing in the NCAA....amer should be a shoo-in for the team...they just have to show up in the try-outs (or maybe not anymore)...

I played against some of the Youth team aspirants here in Davao, watch out for 6'3 players who can dribble the ball well and shoot from the outside...

Sirs, are there no more other schedules? We all know that other schools have classes tomorrow, how about the players in the province? I think a nationwide per region tryout is good but we all know that expenses maybe higher. There are so many untapped talents in the barrios.

i think their training centers in the provinces that will take care of that...and if they're really really good as u say, will they be willing to train in manila? that's one of the main problems of players coming from the provinces esp the young ones...

Altamirano not inclined to join Gilas think tank

Tied up with his commitments with the RP Youth basketball team and the National Basketball Training Center (NBTC), coach Eric Altamirano may pass up the opportunity to join one of the best coaches in international basketball – Rajko Toroman of the Smart-Gilas squad.

“My priority right now is the RP Under-18 team and the NBTC," said Altamirano, who earlier became an understudy of former national coaches Ron Jacobs and Tim Cone. “I want to help coach Toroman and would be glad to join him on the Smart-Gilas bench, but right now, it’s not on top of my priority."

Altamirano
Bringing Altamirano into the coaching staff of Gilas was the idea of Toroman, the mentor who led Iran to its first FIBA Asia Championship crown, himself. The Serbian coach saw the potential of the national youth coach, who led the Under-16 squad to a fighting fourth place finish in the FIBA Asia Youth Championship in Malaysia.

Altamirano and his RP Under-16 team were a game away from reaching the championship round of the FIBA Asia Youth meet, if not for a brick wall that was the mighty Chinese.

Now tasked to handle the Under-18 team, Altamirano said the core of the Filipinos’ U-16 squad will be retained, thus having a continuity program at least for the next two years.

The system is quite similar to the Northern Consolidated team handled by Jacobs in the 80s wherein the bulk of talents remained together up to the time they enter the Philippine Basketball Association and this is what Altamirano wants to achieve.

“Some of the players in the under-16 team will definitely be back," said Altamirano, who has also established his own basketball academy for kids – the Coach-E.

Although Altamirano, who led Puefoods to an All-Filipino title and Mobiline to a Centennial Cup crown in the PBA, may not commit to joining Toroman on the Smart-Gilas bench, two other notable coaches are reportedly being eyed as assistants – multi-titled mentor Louie Alas and former Coca-Cola coach Binky Favis.

Alas, who won championships with Letran, the Manila Metrostars in the defunct Metropolitan Basketball Association and the RP team in the Southeast Asian Games, is currently the head coach of the Philippine Patriots in the Asean Basketball League and also handles the Knights in the National Collegiate Athletic Association.

But the husky mentor sent a text message to GMANews.TV saying that Smart-Gilas made no formal offer for a job as Toroman’s lieutenant.

For his part, Favis, who was replaced last year as chief strategist of the Coca-Cola Tigers in the PBA, seems very much available and would likely accept the job if it’s offered. - GMANews.TV

I agree a couple of Fil-Ams who are 6'4 and above..some of the San Beda Cubs and the mainstays of the U-16 RP youth team should beef up the squad.Even if the kids have no real tall centers or forwards we have 6'4 guys who could run and handle the ball pretty well..Kiefer Ravena will have to learn to score and deliver the ball on the point guard slot.I think a couple of months together and they will be a heck of a team

What happened on the tryout? Any new prospects? :D Who performed well?

Gotladera, javier, Amer and parks will be a good addition to the team that is a big man away from qualifying the world u-17. the possible addition of 2 6'5 players plus a 6'4 multi-dimensional player in parks will add depth to the youth team.

Is there any chance that Ray Parks will be available for this team?
