wow. Parks can carry a team by himself. no one score more than 10pts in his team. he can be a ricky rubio of asia. im wondering, what's his assist average?

I think Ray Parks could adjust very well with the RP U-16 team. I hope with his presence, he could turn it into another Gryphons team. Short in height but very successful.

Ray Parks leads the Gryphons to a 54-47 win over the Harding Academy scoring 26 points and making the last 4 free throw to seal the win for the Gryphons..

Gryphons edge Lions to move into first place

St. George's 54, Harding 47
By Pete Wickham
Wednesday, January 28, 2009

St. George's did the wedding thing Tuesday night. Something old, something new ... and leave Harding Academy feeling a little blue.

Old? Remember those moves that Bobby Parks used to light up the Mid-South Coliseum, and every Memphis Tiger fan in the joint? They're new again, in the 6-3 person of St. George's sophomore Bobby Parks Jr., who with his team, took a giant step forward with a 54-47 home victory.

Shaking off three first-half fouls, Parks dazzled with 17 of his 26 points in the second half, including four free throws in a bizarre final 30 seconds.

The win avenged a 61-54 early-season loss at Harding. It also moved the Gryphons (16-6, 11-2) into a half-game 2-A lead over the Lions (13-6, 10-2).

"We've got three more games, and we've given ourselves a chance to be the top seed in the (West Regional) tournament," Parks said.

Young Parks showed the same ability to slither in close quarters for short jump shots and layups, and the same penchant for coming up big off the glass that his father displayed with the Tigers in the mid-1980s.

"I had to adjust my defense, and concentrate more on pulling up for short jumpers instead of driving hard," Parks said. "My dad taught me that to have an NBA game, you've got to do those things. He's worked me hard."

Parks Sr. was smiling broadly after the game. "You get three fouls, you've got to give up something in order to keep playing. He's learned that."

Harding star Marlon Brown said that Parks "is sharing the ball more, and getting his teammates involved. He did a lot better this time."

It didn't start happening in earnest until after an ugly first half in which Harding built an 18-16 lead, on a last-second bucket by Brown.

Parks scored seven first-quarter points, then got two quick fouls and a seat on the bench. A quick basket, and quick foul, in the second banished him again until halftime.

But in the third quarter, he started to find the short-range solution, and the Gryphons' offense also started dishing assists with points. They found senior Allen Bobango open on the left wing three times for three-pointers to open a 38-31 edge.

St. George's coach Jeff Ruffin, back after missing three weeks because of an appendectomy, said the bigger deal was that "Bobby and the rest of the team started reading the (Harding) defense so much better, sensing the double-team and kicking to the open man."

The Gryphons also played splendid defense on Brown, who had 20 points, but could only get loose for brief stretches against a zone that concentrated on taking away the lane.

"We really did a nice job concentrating on Marlon and taking away what he wants to do," Ruffin said. "You can always play defense while waiting for offense to come around."

"We know he likes to drive, so we wanted to keep him from doing that," said St. George's junior guard Asa Toney, who added 12 points. "Let others try to hit long shots."

It wasn't happening much of the night. "We were 2-of-15 from the three-point line in the first half. Team plays zone, and you can't hit three pointers, you're in trouble," Harding coach Kevin Starks said. "We've also got to be more than just one star player."

Still, the Lions had a chance at the end. A 9-3 run, capped by five of Keilan Stittiams' 15 points closed the gap to 48-47 with 1:38 to play. The last three points came from the free throw line, after he was fouled by Parks while trying a trey.

Following a St. George's miss, Harding guard Dove Houston, who earlier hit two three-pointers, tried to call a timeout to avoid the trap. Instead he was called out of bounds, Harding had to foul Parks, and his two free throws made it 50-47 with 24.9-seconds left.

"Dove was pushed and tried to call the time, but they called him out," said Starks, who argued that call.

Seconds later, after a timeout, Starks could only shake his head as his team was called for a technical for six men on the court with 14.1 seconds on the clock. Parks hit the free throws for a 51-47 cushion.

I haven't got an information about there last win againts Rossville especially the statistics but the important thing they win.

After Ray Parks stint here and become a Philippines Under-16 National Team member he instantly raised his game production and lead his team to all important wins.

John Christian Williams told me that Ray Parks is out of town and he didn't play when the Gryphons won over Rossville Christian Academy last January 13.

Gao Shang Tops Australian Youth Tourney in Scoring, Shi Hongfei Leads in Assists, Steals - Jan 27, 2009 (by Arthur Volbert)
Below are statistics for the top players at the Australian Youth Olympic Festival. China's Gao Shang (197-F-92) led the tournament in scoring with a 22.3 average. He hit 58.8 percent of his field goals including 4 of 8 three-pointers. He hit 75.8 percent of his free throws. Ju Mingxin (200-F-93) was third in scoring, Shi Hongfei (180-G-93) was seventh and Shan Zhiming (196-F-92) was ninth.

197 cm Gao was third in rebounding with 8.3 per game, indicating his athleticism. Point guard Shi Hongfei was tied for eighth with his teammate Zhu Xuhang (207-F-93). Zhu led the tournament with 10 blocks.

Shi led the tournament in assists with 5.5 per game. Shi was tied for the lead in steals with Ju Mingxing and Australia's Jackson Hussey.

Gao was the most prolific all-round player in the tourney. Gao was born in 1992, if we can now believe that the youth teams have accurate ages.

Zhu, Ju and Shi were born in 1993 and, if this is true, are also hugely promising players. Zhu is 207 cm and played center but is projected as a forward. Shi had 15 turnovers but his 3-2 assist-turnover ratio is good with two games against the Australians. At 180 cm, Shi was eighth in rebounding, indicating that he is extremely athletic.

It is clear from photos that Li Muhao (216-C-92) has not received heavy weight training while he is still growing. But he may currently be as tall as 218 cm, according to some observers, and is projected to grow to 220 cm.

He seems to have the type of build that Yao Ming had when young, and likely will be given proper weight training when his growth is complete. So Li is definitely a player to watch.

hope our boys could get a training like this

been told by Coach Eric, the U16 boys would soon be leaving for Australia for their training under the Australian Institute of Sports (AIS) based in Canberra.

As per AIS:

Basketball began as a game of skill rather than one that relied solely on strength. But in today's fast-paced game, both are needed in equal measure. The modern game has become one of aerobic endurance and power, and players need to have an integrated training program that nurtures both of these qualities.

The program has developed a strong tradition of striving for excellence in basketball and in life, through a family-like atmosphere that supports the development of talented junior players.

Coaches in the program are dedicated to the ideal of ensuring players' daily improvement in their basketball development, academic progress, employment, welfare and personal growth. There is a full-time support network of highly qualified sports medicine doctors, physiotherapists, massage therapists, a nursing sister, physiologists, biomechanists, psychologists, academic tutors and house parents to assist with players' specific needs.

Athletes who have come through the AIS basketball program include:

Sandra Brondello
Mark Bradtke
Luc Longley
Shane Heal
Brett Maher
Tony Ronaldson
Andrew Vlahov
Patrick Reidy
Jenny Whittle
Michelle Griffiths (Brogan)
Carla Porter (Boyd)
Trisha Fallon
Kristi Harrower
Lauren Jackson
Penny Taylor
Andrew Bogut
Brad Newley
Patrick Mills

The influence of the AIS Basketball Program in the development of Australian Basketball is reflected in the number of athletes progressing to national junior and senior team selection, and the improvement in Australia’s ranking at all levels of men’s and women’s basketball.

They are just ironing out some things, as the kids would be away for a long time from their family and school.

I think the soon to be formed U16 girls team would also follow the boys to Australia.
