I totally agree, not to discount the win by SSC-R but if not for Jimbo Aquino's 3's, SBC could have won. If Aquino would continue to shoot the way he did last time, hell, give Baste the crown now. Then again, as the old saying goes "Hindi araw-araw PASKO"... Nevertheless, KUDOS to the Stags!

MANILA -- This year, the NCAA will see no more of San Beda’s Sam Ekwe, the Nigerian behemoth who swept the league off its feet with his charismatic presence and his power statistics.
Two more San Beda players, Pong Escobal and Ogie Menor will not be making an appearance in Season 85 with the former leaving for the pros last year, and the latter deciding to join the PBA rookie draft this season.
Mapua’s Kelvin dela Pena, the 2008 MVP, has also looked for greener pastures while teammates Neil Pascual and Ian Mazo have already graduated.
Also gone are stars of last season—San Sebastian’s one-two punch 6’9” Jason “Gagamboy” Ballesteros and Jim Viray, Letran’s phalanx of veterans that included Dino Daa and Kojack Melegrito and Beau Belga, and the rest of the Philippine Christian U Dolphins (out on indefinite leave) among others.
So it leaves us with the likes of Smart Gilas Pilipinas standouts RJ Jazul and Rey Guevarra of Letran, American Sudan Daniel and Borgie Hermida of San Beda, Mapua’s Allan Mangahas, San Sebastian’s Jimbo Aquino and Jose Rizal’s Big Four—James Sena, John Wilson, Marvin Hayes and Mark Cagoco to contest the MVP plum.
After the NCAA's first week, it was disappointing to find out that only the minority of the aforementioned lived up to the pre-season billing while the rest, a staggering majority, flopped.
Starting this week, I will choose the top 10 players of the week based on their performance.
Of course, it will not be just based on statistics. We’re also looking at the intangibles like their leadership, impact to the team and the league, and the extra little things that make a player's team a huge success.
No. 10—Chris Elopre of Perpetual Help
This is a surprising choice. It was also a decision made in the last-minute. Although Elopre, a rookie guard who tried out for Jose Rizal first before deciding to play for Perpetual Help, couldn’t help the Altas in absorbing two lopsided loses, he piled up impressive stats that we couldn’t help but notice. In two games, Elopre had top 10 numbers—16.5 points, league-best six assists, 3.5 rebounds and 1.5 steals. Unfortunately, he couldn’t find ample support. But I’m sure this kid had a blast in his first week in the league.
No. 9—Sudan Daniel of San Beda
It’s unmistakable to miss this kind of raw talent. Imagine a looming 6’7” presence patrolling the paint. He may not be as dominant inside as his predecessor—Nigerian behemoth Sam Ekwe—but he has the offensive tools and the athleticism to surpass everything the latter has achieved. But it appears as if something inside Daniel is holding him back. In fact, in two games Daniel could muster norms of only 12 points, nine caroms and a league-high 4.5 blocks. It wasn’t bad but it’s far from expectations that soared after he powered the Lions to the Nike Summer League and a semifinal finish in the Fil-Oil/Flying V MVP Cup in the pre-season. If he had fought harder, let's say, controlled the rebounds against San Sebastian, San Beda would still be perfect now. Make no mistake about it though, Daniel will come out of his shell and blow away the opposition soon.
No. 8—Bam Bam Gamalinda of San Beda
I'd have to choose between Gamalinda and sophomore forward Jake Pascual for No. 8. While the athletic Pascual has put up big numbers (12.5 points, 9.5 rebounds, and one block), it was Gamalinda who has taken over the scoring chores that Borgie Hermida failed to do in the absence of Escobal and Menor. Gamalinda has a solid 14.5 points and 6.5 boards average in their first two outings but he needs to impose his will more and make the plays in the stretch for San Beda to regain its usual place—on top.
No. 7—Gilbert Bulawan of San Sebastian
Bulawan, a veteran forward who has played behind the shadows of Ballesteros and Viray the past years, has started to show what he’s truly made of. The 6’4” Bulawan was one of the many reasons why the Stags are on top right now, compiling norms of 12.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, three assists and two blocks a game. If he keeps it up, San Sebastian will continue to stay there on top.
No. 6—Jeff Morial of St. Benilde
It would have been teammates Angelo Montecastro or Chuck Dalanon listed as No. 7 in this list instead of Morial. In fact, I was tempted to pick one of the two ahead of Morial after looking at the numbers of Montecastro (15 points, 3.5 boards, 1.5 assists and 1.5 steals) and the energetic Dalanon (15 points and seven boards), compared to Morial’s (14 points, 4.5 caroms, three assists and a steal). But more than the stat sheets, it was Morial's unflagging leadership, defense and willingness to make the plays in the crucial stretches of the Blazers’ sensational two wins that led us to put him in our list.
No. 5—Adrian Celada of Arellano U
This lanky, prolific Philippine Basketball League veteran has shown he can play after helping the Chiefs, one of the three guest teams allowed to play in the league this season, to zoom to a mighty 2-0 (win-loss) start. In Arellano’s wins over Emilio Aguinaldo College and multi-titled Letran, Celada led the team in scoring (16.5) and had equally good numbers in other departments (six caroms, 1.5 steals, 1.5 blocks and an assist). No wonder the Chiefs are up there with the best.
No. 4—Giorgio Ciriacruz of Arellano U
While Celada is the team’s top offensive weapon, Ciriacruz takes care of the defense as its No. 1 post defender. Though undersized at 6’3” against the best big men the league can offer, Ciriacruz has the will and the strength to hold his own inside. And his numbers speak for itself—15 points, 6.5 rebounds, two blocks, two assists and a steal. And he can do it in offense, too, after burying three triples and going six-of-nine from the field and nine-of-11 from the foul line.
No. 3—John Wilson of Jose Rizal
As expected, Wilson has found a way to make it this far high of the list by coming up with mind-boggling numbers--a league- high 20 points. He also spiked with nine caroms, 2.5 steals, an assist, and a perimeter defense that is one of the league’s finest. I wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up with the MVP trophy and a first championship to boot.
No. 2—James Sena of Jose Rizal
Read these: 16 points, league-high 11 rebounds, a team-best and league second-best five assists, and nearly a steal and a block in two games. These are by no means MVP numbers. It’s also a statement that he is serious in helping power the Bombers to their first title since going all the way 1972. That was the same era when Philip Cezar lorded it over the field. Sena may not be same as the man known as “The Tapal King,” but he sure has the drive and the heart to accomplish the same feat.

In those two games, he drained 10 of the 13 shots he took from behind the arc. Six of these booming triples torched the Lions in an 83-77 shock win. Four of it came in the fourth quarter of the same game, with the last one sending the dagger straight into the three-peat champion’s heart. Interestingly, Aquino plays for a coach that is one of the PBA’s finest shooters—Ato “The Atom Bomb” Agustin.

The NCAA Press Corps picked San Sebastian sharp shooter Jimbo Aquino as its ACCEL/Fil-Oil Player of the Week after powering the Stags to the early share of the lead in Season 85.
Aquino, who has taken the leadership cudgels from last year’s leaders Jason Ballesteros and Jim Viray, averaged 23 points in wins over Perpetual Help and reigning three-peat champion San Beda the past week.
During that stretch, Aquino buried a whopping 10 of the 13 triples he attempted including six in a masterful shock 83-77 win over the heavily favored Lions Monday that sent them atop the heap along with last year’s runner-up Jose Rizal, St. Benilde and guest team Arellano U on 2-0 (win-loss) slates.
It was enough to gain the nod of the group composed of the reporters from the country’s leading broadsheets and tabloids as its first recipient of the award presented by ACCEL and Fil-Oil.
Aquino quickly thanked his new coach former PBA MVP Renato “The Atom Bomb” Agustin for the confidence he showed in him.
“I have so much confidence this year because of the new system of coach (Agustin),” said the soft-spoken Aquino, a 23-year-old native of Bamban, Tarlac.
Agustin, one the finest shooters that PBA has produced, felt nothing out impressed.
“He’s one of the hardest worker of the team, he’s the team leader,” said Agustin, whose charges walloped the Altas, 76-64, in last week’s opener at the Big Dome.

Angeles University Foundation unleashed a vicious running game as it smothered fellow guest teams Emilio Aguinaldo College, 86-75, yesterday to clinch its first in the 85th NCAA basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.
Aaron Santos erupted for 29 points he spiked with five booming triples while Fil-Am Matt Carney pounded it inside to finish with 24 points and seven rebounds as the Great Danes knocked in their first win in two starts.
"It's a good feeling winning our first game in the NCAA," said AUF coach Eric Gascon, whose team had to travel two hours from Pampanga to play here and another two hours to travel back home every game.
Gascon, a member of the Pampanga Dragons that won a crown in the defunct MBA in the late 90s, said he applied the same running game he used to do when he was with the Far Eastern U Tams in the UAAP early in the 90s.
"When I played for FEU, we always run because our point guard is Johnny Abbarientos. We had to run with him if we went to get the ball and score," said Gascon.
It was the second straight loss for the Generals, who drew the scoring from Russell Yaya, Argell Mendoza and John Santos, who fired 21, 19 and 15 points but couldn't stop the pair of Santos and Carney from exploding.
To make things worth, Mendoza, EAC's veteran point guard, turned the ball a season-high 11 times that wasted his strong offensive performance.
In juniors' action, San Beda whitewashed Arellano U, 106-51, to seize the lead with three straight triumphs.
EAC's high school team made up for its college counterparts' disappointment by smashing AUF, 78-62.
The Great Danes made their move in the third quarter when they turned a 40-41 deficit at the break to a 68-53 going into the final canto. Santos and Chuck Gomez connived in unloading a 28-12 blast in the third period that probably zapped the fight out of the Generals.
San Beda gave guest team Arellano U little room to operate and hacked out a relatively easy 102-74 win yesterday to get back on track in the 85th NCAA basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.
Garvo Lanete led all scorers with 20 points as he went three-of-three from behind the arc while Borgie Hermida, American Sudan Daniel and Jay-R Taganas chipped in 14 points apiece to help power the Lions to their second win in three starts.
More importantly, San Beda erased the stigma of a 77-83 loss to San Sebastian last week.
"Its all about preparation we prepared our team to come out strong we played solid defense how to defend their shooters and we're pretty successful on that," said San Beda coach Frankie Lim.
"And I think we beat their press in the first half, that was also a key," he added.
It was the Chiefs first setback after pulling off wins over EAC and multi-titled Letran.

Aaron Santos erupted for 29 points he spiked with five booming triples while Fil-Am Matt Carney pounded it inside to finish with 24 points and seven rebounds as the Great Danes knocked in their first win in two starts.
"It's a good feeling winning our first game in the NCAA," said AUF coach Eric Gascon, whose team had to travel two hours from Pampanga to play here and another two hours to travel back home every game.
Gascon, a member of the Pampanga Dragons that won a crown in the defunct MBA in the late 90s, said he applied the same running game he used to do when he was with the Far Eastern U Tams in the UAAP early in the 90s.
"When I played for FEU, we always run because our point guard is Johnny Abbarientos. We had to run with him if we went to get the ball and score," said Gascon.
It was the second straight loss for the Generals, who drew the scoring from Russell Yaya, Argell Mendoza and John Santos, who fired 21, 19 and 15 points but couldn't stop the pair of Santos and Carney from exploding.
To make things worth, Mendoza, EAC's veteran point guard, turned the ball a season-high 11 times that wasted his strong offensive performance.
In juniors' action, San Beda whitewashed Arellano U, 106-51, to seize the lead with three straight triumphs.
EAC's high school team made up for its college counterparts' disappointment by smashing AUF, 78-62.
The Great Danes made their move in the third quarter when they turned a 40-41 deficit at the break to a 68-53 going into the final canto. Santos and Chuck Gomez connived in unloading a 28-12 blast in the third period that probably zapped the fight out of the Generals.
San Beda gave guest team Arellano U little room to operate and hacked out a relatively easy 102-74 win yesterday to get back on track in the 85th NCAA basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.
Garvo Lanete led all scorers with 20 points as he went three-of-three from behind the arc while Borgie Hermida, American Sudan Daniel and Jay-R Taganas chipped in 14 points apiece to help power the Lions to their second win in three starts.
More importantly, San Beda erased the stigma of a 77-83 loss to San Sebastian last week.
"Its all about preparation we prepared our team to come out strong we played solid defense how to defend their shooters and we're pretty successful on that," said San Beda coach Frankie Lim.
"And I think we beat their press in the first half, that was also a key," he added.
It was the Chiefs first setback after pulling off wins over EAC and multi-titled Letran.

This one paints one in bold, red letters….. BEDAN.
Luis Alfonso “LA” Revilla is one of the many San Beda Red Cubs who honed their basketball skills under the tutelage of the great mentor Ato Badolato. In 2007, he joined the De La Salle University Green Archers and as a rookie point guard, led them to a runner up finish in the 71st season of the UAAP. Much like his elder brothers, JV Casio and RenrenRitualo who came before, he was among the ”ones that got away” who have jumped off the NCAA fence to lift their UAAP schools to basketball glory. These departures from the San Beda basketball program have always been bittersweet, since leaving most often amounts to forgetting. But those named, and the one that appears above, beg to disagree.
During the last Fil-oil Flying V Pre-season Cup, this image of LA touched a soft spot in the hearts of the Bedans who witnessed the San Beda-De La Salle match-up. When the San Beda band blew its horns to play the Bedan hymn, LA stepped forward to distinguish himself from his Green Archer teammates, proudly raised his fist and joined in paying homage to our Alma Mater. His teammates in green were bewildered by the gesture. But the Bedans not.
With LA’s affirmation, we were all reminded that,
Wherever we go,
Whatever we end up to be,
We may wear green or dress up in blue…
But the red that runs in our blood will never fade.

San Sebastian, Benilde target solo lead

MANILA, Philippines - San Sebastian and College of St. Benilde dispute the solo lead today in a duel of unbeaten teams while Letran and Perpetual Help collide in a clash of winless squads in the 85th NCAA basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.
The Stags, who stunned the three-peat champion San Beda Red Lions, 83-77, last week for their second straight win, and the hot-starting Blazers part ways as they square off in the 4 p.m. main game.
Letran and Perpetual Help, on the other hand, shoot for first win at each other’s expense in the 2 p.m. opener. The Knights and the Altas have dropped their first two games.
Jimbo Aquino, who starred for SSC in its victory over San Beda, hopes to come up with a big follow-up to his 26-point game against the Lions, including four triples in the fourth quarter that anchored the Stags’ stirring win.
“It’s a huge win and I want to think it gave us more confidence,” said San Sebastian coach Ato Agustin, a former PBA MVP.
The SSC mentor, however, cautioned his players not to take the Blazers lightly.
“We have to respect all teams we face, we can’t afford to be overconfident with anyone,” said Agustin.
St. Benilde has racked up two victories over Angeles U Foundation and Mapua to join the fancied SSC and Jose Rizal U at the helm.
St. Benilde coach Richard del Rosario is hopeful his wards will be able to hold their own against the Stags as they brace for a tough four-game schedule that includes matches against the Lions and the Knights next week.
“This is a game that would measure us as a team because we’ll be facing tougher San Beda and Letran next,” said del Rosario.

Letran's final joust in the 4th quarter pays off against UPHDS. 73-68 is the score. RJ Jazul really came out like a steaming geyser with his rainbow shots. Even Rey Guevarra stepped up, big time in the first 3 or 4 minutes of the 4th before he fouled out.

MANILA, Philippines – Jose Rizal U mentor Ariel Vanguardia is not surprised at all that John Wilson was selected as the FilOil Accel NCAA Press Corps Player of the Week.
Vanguardia said that Wilson's game have improved because of his desire be a better player.
“He’s the first one to arrive on the gym where he practices his shooting and he’s also the last player to leave," Vanguardia said on his 6-foot-2 forward who helped the Bombers’ 3-0 start this season.
Wilson's improved game keyed the Bombers' 83-69 win last Friday over guest team Emilio Aguinaldo College. In that match, Wilson ignited a third quarter run to finish with 22 points, 12 of which came from the three-point area.
Wilson actually posted a double-double in that game as he also grabbed 10 rebounds. He also had three steals and did not commit a single turnover.
Last July 3, Wilson also acted as the team's spark when he romped off with 19 points, 15 from beyond the arc, to help the Bombers score an 83-58 triumph over Perpetual Help.
"For me, he is the best shooter in the league right now," said Vanguardia.
Vanguardia added that Wilson is part of his one-two punch that has been giving opponents headaches this season.
“Wilson and big man James Sena complement each other’s game," said Vanguardia, who is now tied with San Sebastian for the leadership.
Vanguardia added that Wilson could be an all-around player if he could improve his defense.

* Arellano's record may not be that impressive right now, but they did give Letran a scare, and they now also did it to JRU. I think the Chiefs are for real, and it is only a matter of time before they become a constant fixture in the Final Four battle in the coming years.

MANILA, Philippines - John Wilson fired eight of his game-high 26 points in the fourth quarter as Jose Rizal U turned back a pesky Arellano U, 88-82, yesterday to wrest the solo lead in the 85th NCAA men’s basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.
Wilson eluded his defenders to knock in the big baskets in the fourth period, virtually dashing the hopes of the Chiefs, whose defense slowed down the Bombers and kept the game close throughout.
The fiery JRU guard also hauled down nine rebounds, and made seven assists, two steals and one shot block.
“He’s probably the hardest worker in the team,” said JRU coach Ariel Vanguardia of Wilson, who also drew solid support from James Sena and Marvin Hayes.
It was Jose Rizal U’s fourth win in row, leaving erstwhile joint leader San Sebastian in second while dealing Arellano its second loss in four starts.
The power-playing Sena and Hayes had 17 and 16 points, respectively, and combined for 23 of the total team’s 43 rebounds, 18 more than Arellano.
“But I have to give it to Arellano, they played probably one of their best games so far,” said Vanguardia.
With their defense holding, the Chiefs forced the Bombers to commit 28 errors, leading to 34 fastbreak points.
Andrian Celada paced his team with 19 points while Leonard Anquillo, the smallest at 5-1 but probably one of the fastest players in the league, scattered 18 points.
In the other game, Perpetual Help relied on rookie Chrisper Elopre as it downed Angeles U Foundation, 94-84, to notch its first win in four games.
It was the Great Danes’ third setback against a win.
